Will likely be incomprehensible to anyone without a pretty decent grounding in philosophy, but if you have a bit of experience . . . it'll still be pretty challenging, despite the regular infusions of humor. That's not because the writing's anything less than excellent, just that the subjects (time! existence! identity!) are so inherently inscrutable.Most importantly, this book is very fair - it takes these three variously objectionable thinkers and actually considers, in depth, whether they provide helpful or interesting answers. And in some cases the answer is yes! So when the author(s) eventually conclude that at least one of these thinkers is truly, laughably inept (spoiler: it's Moldbug), it feels like he's been given an honest consideration, and not just a slagging.Bravo.
An engaging read that dances from subject to subject with a wry, jaundiced wit. The opening premise (that everything is doomed, and there's not much any individual can do to change it) is… bracing in its pessimism, to say the least. What follows is a nimble deconstruction of the alt-right's ideological roots, from Austrian economics to millennialist singularity fetishism and pseudofascist tech-solutionism.This is absolutely, positively, not a book designed to convince your alt-right buddy he's wrong. Rather, it's a deep dive into how the hell all of his pop-economics shibboleths, race-war nightmare-wishes, and tech-disruptors-as-gods hero worship were cobbled together into a movement in the first place. If you're not up for a discursive, 100-page explanation of how neoreactionary thought is a shabby recapitulation of Blake, maybe think twice. But if that perked your interest, click 'Buy now' and click it fast. There's only so much capitalism left.
Approachable, witty, sharp essays in the general politics meets cultural studies crossroads. You'll like this if you like books like Angela Nagele's Kill All Normies or Pankaj Mishra's Age of Anger.
A totally brilliant book. Witty and insightful; the best book I've read so far this year. I was wanting to make some sense of the state of the nation(s) and this book has certainly gone a long way to helping me do that. Lots to explore from this basis. And did I mention it was as funny as hell?
A compelling writer who braves the expanse of neo-reactionary philosophy. I will be backing his next several Kickstarter campaigns on the strength of this alone.
It's generally informative and fun to read in parts, but it appears to lack a clear sense of direction, and it's in need of an editor. It might help to know a thing or two about critical theory, hauntology, and accelerationism before tackling this one, though the author does try to give some background info on this stuff so that you're not too far in the dark.
This is one of the first political and philosophical works I've read in depth, and I felt that it was really worthwhile; I fully plan to give it another reread and a ponder, and I encourage anyone considering it to give it a try as well.
