About the Author

William G. Zikmund, Ph.D., was a professor of marketing at Oklahoma State University until his death in 2002. He received his bachelor of science degree in marketing from the University of Colorado, a master of science degree from Southern Illinois University, and a Ph.D. in business administration with a concentration in marketing from the University of Colorado. The search function in the Kindle version worked fantastic. This book was required for a Research Methods course I took over the Summer of 2016. It was a good book, the later chapters became more difficult to take in with all the formulas. However, the book was laid out well and easy to understand.

This is a book for class. So far so good. It is a textbook rental which saved me hundreds of dollars. It's a $400 book roughly and I rented it for less than $50.

Binding/outer cover arrived coming completely off book-ridiculous

This is a rental. It's in good condition. I would recommend. Plus it's very informative, it had all the technical information I needed to start my research.

The only issue with the book I received yesterday is that the pages are detached fron the hard cover, other than that, it is good.

4.5 out of 5 stars rounded up.Strange Fruit by Gary Golio (author) and Charlotte Riley-Webb (Illustrator) is an absolutely wonderful picture book about Billie Holiday's famous song with the same title.The first thing you notice in this book are the illustrations. They are vibrant and seemingly leap from the pages. They're sort of brash and crazy, but they're absolutely beautiful and just right for this book. I'm not sure of the medium. They appear to be either oil paint or pastels. Perhaps even oil pastels. Whatever was used, the broad strokes and vibrant colors combine just perfectly.The story line of the book is well told and moves along at a decent pace. The prose is well written and it's definitely a story that deserves to be, even needs to be told. It's not a real nice story as far as "happy ever after" and making you smile all the way through, but it's a needed story and a well written one. It will make you think. It may cause difficult discussions between you and any children you read it with, but it's an important story to tell and an important piece of history (and unfortunately, to a point, part of current events as well) that needs to be discussed.The only reason this picture book did not get 5 stars from me is because I felt that at times, the text was difficult to read because of the vibrant illustrations and the small font used. Now, I did read this book as an eBook and not in print format. Perhaps it is easier to read the text in the print format. Other than that small issue, this book is phenomenal and I highly recommend it to everyone. Those who are fans of Billie Holiday will certainly appreciate it, but I believe that it's a great book for everyone, not just those who are fans.

A wonderful and much needed picture book biography of Billie Holiday that focuses on her singing of, arguably, the first important protest song of the 20th century - Strange Fruit. The text, tone and amount of information are perfect for kids 4-7th grade. Both I ( a K-8 school librarian ) and the music teacher will use this in programming. Back matter includes 'What happened after', a biography that fills in blanks, source notes and a selected biography.

Excellent book! Great illustrations. Use as an extension for a Blues unit in 6th grade music.

Billie Holiday had survived a rough childhood that saw her jailed at age 14 and become a successful jazz singer. Despite her success though, she was still forbidden to do things that her white band members were allowed. She had to hide in rooms, take freight elevators and pretend to be someone different in order to stay in hotels and not sleep on the tour bus. This was all dangerous and eventually she quit. She found a new place to sing in Cafe Society, the first jazz club that welcomed African-American audience members. It was there that she was given the song, Strange Fruit, a song that would become her best-known work. A song that was so powerful that it was met with silence the first time she sang it. A song that would come to speak to a new generation as they stand together today.Golio has taken a song that is about lynching and turned it into a picture book. It’s a daring subject for a book for young readers, yet he makes it entirely understandable. He uses notes at the end of the book to continue Holiday’s story and also speak about lynching and its history in the United States. The bulk of the picture book is about Holiday’s struggles in the 1930s with pervasive racism and the way that this song spoke to her personal experience and that of all African-Americans.The illustrations are deep and powerful. They show the pain of racism, the power of song, the energy of a performance and the drama of silence and darkness. Done in acrylic paint and tissue collage, they have a wild freedom of line that works well with the intense subject matter.An important picture book about a song that has transcended generations and speaks to the struggles of today and yesterday. Appropriate for ages 7-11.

It's not often that a children's nonfiction book brings tears to my eyes, but Strange Fruit certainly had that effect. Even though I was familiar with the song and its story, the beautifully artistic presentation of Ms Holiday elicits a strong emotional response.The book masterfully tells the story of Ms Holiday in such a way that the reader understands she had a difficult life, but without going into painful specifics.The significance of Strange Fruit's lyrics can be seen in the faces of stunned audience members at Ms Holiday's shows.Highly recommended reading.I received this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

My first impression of this book was movement. The bold, swirling strokes of the brush blended people into instruments creating energy and movement on a two-dimensional page. The words are spare but powerfully combined to provide a brief, but passionate glimpse into the life of Billie Holiday. Although the harsher aspects of Holiday's short life are alluded to, no details or explanation are given in the main text. More information, both about the title song and Holiday, is provided at the end, along with source notes and a selected bibliography. I can't wait to share this book with my 5th grade students.Be prepared for questions from discerning listeners/readers who want to know more about Holiday's life and the difficulties that she faced. Students have a knack for homing in on the "juicy bits" that we edit out. The story inspired me to look up more facts about this amazing, troubled singer and I plan to scour my biography section for age-appropriate options (perhaps a "Who Was Billie Holiday?").This review is based on an advance copy provided by NetGalley. Five Presidents INTRODUCTION Walking Beside History As a Special Agent in the United States Secret Service, I had the honor and privilege of serving five presidents—Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard M. Nixon, and Gerald R. Ford—three Republicans and two Democrats. From my unique vantage point, I had the rare opportunity to observe the human side of these men—the most powerful men in the world—as each dealt with the enormous responsibilities and unforeseen challenges thrust upon them, and how their individual characters and personalities affected grave decisions. My seventeen years in the Secret Service spanned the period that encompassed the U-2 spy incident; the Cold War; the Cuban Missile Crisis; the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., and Robert F. Kennedy; the civil rights movement, riots and burning of major U.S. cities; the Vietnam War; Watergate; and the resignations of Vice President Spiro T. Agnew and President Nixon. In less than two decades, America went from being unquestionably the most respected and admired nation in the world to a country whose image had become tarnished by violence, scandal, and deceit. It is interesting to note that of these five presidents, only Eisenhower had a normal run as president—elected by the people and serving two full terms. Kennedy was elected in 1960 by the slimmest of margins, and his term lasted just one thousand days, cut short by an assassin. Suddenly, the vice president became president. Johnson was reelected the following year, but when the demands of the office and the casualties of the Vietnam War became more than he could bear, he chose not to run for a second term. Nixon was elected in 1968, and again in 1972, but in the wake of the Watergate scandal, he became the first United States president to resign, in 1974. A year earlier, when Nixon’s vice president, Spiro Agnew, resigned in disgrace, Nixon appointed Gerald Ford as vice president. Thus, upon Nixon’s resignation, Ford became president, never having been elected to the office. It was a turbulent time, and there I was, in the middle of it all. As with our two previous books, my talented writing partner, Lisa McCubbin, and I have attempted to bring history to life through my experiences. While Mrs. Kennedy and Me focused on my interactions with Jacqueline Kennedy, and Five Days in November detailed those tragic days surrounding the assassination, the Kennedy section in this book focuses on my observations of and interactions with President Kennedy. There is unavoidably some overlap, but the recollections of my years with Eisenhower, Johnson, Nixon, and Ford are revealed here for the first time. There is no doubt that the assassination of President Kennedy was a defining moment for me, and it would affect me on many levels for the rest of my life. I was thrust onto the pages of history, but it has often bothered me that I would be remembered solely for my actions on that one day. For there was much that led up to that moment, and much that followed. Like the five presidents I served, there were many things that influenced the decisions I made, the actions I took, the man I became. It has indeed been an extraordinary journey.

A boring read. Nothing insightful. This book offers no intimate details of any of the five presidents written about, and as well it shouldn't. And the co-author obviously can't write about any of theSecret Services most intriging activities for security reasons. That being said, why write this book?

Definitely a page turner of the nth degree. Clint and Lisa weave an insider's view of the Presidency as no one else can. Their crisp and readable prose makes this a fascinating and enjoyable book that is hard to put down. We all know about Clint's interaction with John and Jacqueline Kennedy but the anecdotes of the others he protected are priceless. This is all new material here. Tales of Eisenhower, Johnson, Nixon, Agnew and Ford will keep you craving more. When you are finished you'll want Clint and Lisa to write a sequel with other historical gems too. Books like this are rare, informative and incredibly enjoyable to read. A winning combination!

If you want a detailed, intelligent, eloquent tale of presidential history read Clint Hill's "Five Presidents" which covers his 17 years in the Secret Service protecting occupants of the White House. From the days of Eisenhower, when security was far more casual than it would be after the assassination of JFK, to the Ford administration Mr Hill tells the stories which illuminate the lives of each leader in a thoughtful way. This is not an autobiography in the true sense of the word. It is not even an autobiography as told to, such as the Autobiography of Malcolm X. Apparently this writer was commissioned by MLK's family to write an account of his life, based on his writings and their remembrances. The author imagines conversations that Dr. King might have, and supports that with snippets of his writing. Maybe that's okay for some, but I say this is a biography, mostly of his adult activist life, and it contains none of the critical analysis that's in David Garrow's Bearing the Cross. This "autobiography" left me hungry for the real story. The one highlight for me was reading Dr. King's Letter from a Birmingham Jail. Other than that, I could have made better use of my time. But that's just me. Buy it if you want to read an outline of his life.

Phillips has written a few leadership books - and does a masterful job in each - yet especially here.For this book, he weaves through with a leadership lesson in each chapter - and generally places the lesson tied directly to something King did - trying to stay close to chronological order. He also supplies us with key quotes from King at the beginning and end of each chapter - for a quick summary and overview.Phillips sets the context in which King operated. This is huge! I don't believe you can't fully understand without immersing in the history, the mindset, the goings on of the time. Phillips doesn't assume the reader is familiar with King. He doesn't assume the reader knows the circumstances of King's time. Phillips pulls the reader in; explaining the leadership trait King embodied; he explains what in King's past helped him to get here. He explains the historical context of what the culture was like, what current events caused the situation, what players were involved and a little on their mindset and background. He points out how even a great man like King made mistakes, how we evaluated his successes and failures, and how he grew and improved throughout.King's life was short and was lived mainly before I was born - he died at age 39 - and had learned more and accomplished more than many that lived to be twice his age. Being a student of leadership, but someone who knew very little about King, I chose this book to learn about both. It inspired me to read more about King. I am amazed at how he put his principles before even fear of criticism, family threats, and even death. I think the reader will learn a lot about King, his struggles, his faith, his life, his goals, and especially his leadership style. Yet, for burgeoning leaders, it is very insightful. It will make someone think about whether they truly want to be a leader and what sacrifices they are willing to make.Phillips makes this an easy read - but not an easy one to just race through without reflection.

It was unfortunate that Martin Luther King Jr. did not get a chance to write his own autobiography, but Clayborne Carson does a wonderful job piecing together Martin's life struggles, highlights and main ideas. Martin's honesty and quest for justice rings throughout. There were a few sections that were duplicative, but overall I thought it was an excellent, absorbing read. To me, the book really delivered toward the end. Discussions on the concepts of power and love and nonviolence and violence were exceptional. I also really appreciated Martin's digging down to the root cause of black thought in relation to America - why, for example, many young black people leaned toward violence as a method to gain freedom and respect. Finally, there were a number of passages that could have been written today - so many points Martin made are as fresh as ever. Martin's revelations are timeless. Everyone who wants to understand America should read this book.

I bought this book for a number of reasons. Firstly, I knew precious little about the man who stands as a giant of history. I also knew little about the kind of Christianity he professed, and had heard some people scandalously say that King was in no real way a Christian (i.e. Christopher Hitchens). All I can say after reading this book is WOW - what an amazing story. I heard King's voice speaking every word of every chapter. It was like he was sitting next to you telling you the story of his life.King was most certainly a Christian. He grew up in a Christian home, he went to Seminary, he became a minister and pastored a Church. He spoke of a personal relationship with Jesus. He depended on God for strength during difficult times, he prayed to Jesus, he worshiped Jesus, he preached about Jesus, and led a congregation of Jesus followers. If that's not Christian nothing is. Yet his theology was decidedly liberal. He was embarrassed by his fundamentalist upbringing, especially those who would check their minds in at the door of Church and stomp their feet during the service. He spoke candidly about denying the bodily resurrection of Jesus, and embracing the liberal view of man. However he was an honest man, who at times questioned his presuppositions. I was impressed how he preached a Gospel that led to action in the present world. Not just a gospel of Sunday pieties.In story after story King recounted how he was committed to nonviolence because this was the way of Jesus (and Gandhi whom he was later influenced by). He didn't preach hatred of white people, but reconciliation, with an aim to a fully integrated society. If anyone had reason to hate it was King. His home was bombed, his friends homes were bombed, he and his family were verbally abused and threatened, he was stabbed, he was arrested more times than I can count, and was often the victim of gross injustice. Yet in all that he showed the world that he served another Lord, and preached a different Gospel. Violence, only begets more violence. My heart broke for those who suffered during the era of segregation. At times I was almost reduced to tears, reading about the horrors of what mankind has done to each other. Not only that but I finally came to understand a little of what it was like to grow up as a Black Man in a climate of racism, to suffer under such terrible injustice, disrespect and disenfranchisement. Blessed are the peacemakers like Dr King, for they will be called the children of God.Yet there were times I felt that King's liberalism got the better of him. I felt that King's idea of heaven on earth was simply an integrated society where everyone had equal opportunity to all state services, good jobs, and so on. Yet this idea doesn't go far enough. What about personal repentance and transformation through the power of the Holy Spirit? Can non-violent action really bring this about? Does it treat the symptoms rather than the root cause of the issue? What God's kingdom coming to earth, and us anticipating it in the present, but recognizing it is a future reality? He condemned violent protest, and distanced himself from people like Malcolm X but didn't call on those who had been violent to repent and follow Jesus. Many times he simply rationalized their violence as the understandable reaction of those who had suffered for too long. He often saw the suffering of the negro community as redemptive. But that is to give the community too much power, and a job that only Jesus can truly accomplish. If King meant that through their suffering and weakness, they embodied Jesus' suffering, and pointed people more fully towards Christ, then I have no issues. King's views on poverty and military action were a little naive. Giving away surplus food from the western world to store it in the empty bellies of hungry Indian Children, is a noble thought, but nothing more than a short term solution to a systemic problem. Giving away food like that can drive down the prices of local produce and cause more harm for the local economy than good.Yet those quibbles aside, this is still a fantastic book. Towards the end it gets a little dry and repetitive, but is very readable. If you only read one book on the Civil rights movement and it's pivotal leader, read this one.

Dover does printed and CD based clip art like no body else I know. I purchased this book/CD combo to do a project and then passed it along to a friend who does graphics for a living and he loved it. Easy to use and with lots of genuine heraldic designs, this one is a great value for anyone who finds themselves in need of quick path to great looking digital heraldry.

This has been a handy book to have around if you are working on heraldry shields or images. Lots of detail.

If you're looking for a selection of copyright-free clip art images to use for websites, posters, flyers, or other projects, this is a nice collection. All the images are done in a stencil motif, and encompass a variety of subjects, including floral designs, animals, southwestern and Native American patterns, Oriental designs, Egyptian designs, Celtic designs and knotwork, Christmas and other holidays, fruits and vegetables, maritime images, fairy tale characters, and carousel horses. There are 902 black-and-white images in total, useable with either Windows or Macintosh. The graphics are all quite large on the CD-ROM, so you can re-size them in any graphics program to whatever dimensions you need. They are all available in GIF, JPG, BMP, PICT, TIF, and WMF formats, saved at 600 DPI. The book itself contains a preview of every image, each accompanied by the image number, so you can easily find the one you want on the CD-ROM. The CD fits into a plastic sleeve on the inside back cover of the book for safekeeping. I have used clip art from this and other Dover Clip Art books on numerous occasions, and have been quite happy with it.

I can't believe how POOR the actual scans of the artwork are. The images on the printed page are of fine quality. The electronic version is nigh unto useless. I won't be buying from Dover again.
