This man knows how to write. His sentences are transparently clear and sometimes distilled to an almost magical purity of meaning. It's not a long book and it's easy enough for people with no knowledge of Islam, yet experts will probably be able to learn a lot from it too, because of the author's outstanding mastery of his material. The book manages the feat of combining tremendous readability with great scholarly thoroughness. It also manages the feat of being both more hard-hitting and yet more compassionate than any other book out there on Islam. The Third Choice should be a top contender for best single introduction to Islam and also to the Islamic textual and historical basis of "dhimmitude." Dhimmitude means turning non-Muslims into second class citizens subject to various kinds of legal and social discrimination. The institution is reminiscent of Jim Crow era segregation or South African apartheid, but dhimmitude is based on religious rather than racial discrimination, and is often considered by Muslims eternal and unchangeable till the end of time, because sourced in the eternal word of Allah in the Qur'an, and in the example of Muhammad in the canonical Islamic traditions about Muhammad's life. The Third Choice employs Durie's conscientious and insightful style to make a powerful case that Islam and creeping dhimmitude pose growing dangers to civil liberties and open societies. He makes the case through a consideration of core Islamic texts, Islamic history, modern media reports, and his own experience living in Indonesia. Durie evinces a profound knowledge of the core Islamic texts and what those texts direct Muslims to do about unbelievers. Despite the book's relative brevity, it's almost miraculously comprehensive and thorough, pulls no punches, and reveals the darkest underbelly of Islam with unmatched effectiveness and yet with genuine compassion. A work of genius.

This book is a commentary on Islam that cites primary sources- the Quran, the Sunna and the Haddiths as well as the work of scholars from earliest times right through to contemporary publications. It is very uncomfortable book to read and shows a religion out of step with the world in which we live. This is a religion that says not to take unbelievers as your friends and that it is acceptable to kill and rape infidels and plunder their property. It cites as one example the current crisis in Sudan where millions have been killed in the South. This religion also says that female circumcision is recommended, not a cultural tradition as we in the West are led to believe. This religion also says it is acceptable for young girls to be married and cites as an example the Ayatollah Khomeini who in his late 20's married an eleven year old girl. This is a religion that says it is permissable to lie and obligatory to lie if the goal is obligatory and gave many examples including Yassar Arafat who while in negotiation for peace with Israel gave an inflamatory speech in Capetown exhorting his hearers to come and to fight a jihad to liberate Jerusalem. This is a religion that still accepts that dhimmis (infidels) are required to pay jizya which is best described as a protection tax ie if you don't pay, the consequences are death, rape and plunder. The Christians in modern day Baghdad have to pay this.In multicultural Australia we are encouraged to welcome and accept all people and their religion. We are not perfect and have made some regrettable decisions. After reading The Third Choice I feel I can no longer hold a balanced view about Islam and its place in modern Australia. Obviously I must read more, so Mark Drury has set me on a path of personal discovery that I hope will lead me to better informed opinions and comments.

This is my first book by Mark Durie and it is outstanding. If you're interested in learning about Islam here is a book. The Author is very careful to show things as unbiased as possible. He is not a right-wing, anti-Islam nut case. He is very measured in his writing, his assessment and leaves the conclusions to you the reader. I have read a lot on Islam from many different angles and this one is unique in its approach. It has the background, the detail and is laid out to understand. It is not a quick read but a thorough one.

This book is important and apposite. Our lounge rooms day by day are filled with stories that leave us agog. We can not rely of the media for any explanation that will bore down into the issues. Part of that is because the media is committed to a secular understanding of all of history. What is happening in our world today is not explained by a Marxist analysis of history. Much of it is about creed and confession. When you read the Third Choice, which is written from the standpoint of a believing Christian, you will gain an understanding of what is driving these forces, and hopefully you will gain a much richer understanding of what is happening.

This is an excellent insight into the history and practices of the Islamic faith and its Prophet. It is extremely detailed and comprehensively referenced - this can make it a 'hard' read at times but one which should be undertaken by Muslims and non-Muslims alike. Some will find it quite revealing (Muslims included); others will find it surprising; and still others will find it extremely disturbing. Given the present world climate of unrest, particularly in the Middle East and Syria, it is a book which, I would strongly advise, must be read. Those who are "people of the Book" - Jews and Christians - have cause to be worried in spite of the assurances that are given by certain spokespeople for, and 'interpreters of the Islamic faith. Read it and come to your own conclusion!

Toronto: Biography of a City

Review

"...Levine's shrewd and lively account of two centuries of Toronto history..." (Maclean's)"His book...comes packed with such stories, moments from Toronto's odd history that prove the city was weird long before Rob Ford was elected." (National Post)"...an entertaining book. Levine has made an energetic career -- I hope a successful one, he deserves it -- of popularizing Canadian history with a big reach...he writes chatty history...bringing it alive again." (Literary Review of Canada)"...a fond but not uncritical history of Canada's largest city...his handsome book...Toronto: Biography of A City reads well. It abounds with punchy portraits of the city's leading citizens: many scoundrels and a few tarnished saints. Levine is adept at linking historical events to today's news...Levine enlivens his tale with judicious helpings of sex, drugs and rock and roll...After reading it, many Canadians may agree with Levine's judgment: 'In short, Toronto is one self-absorbed fishbowl.' But it's our fishbowl." (Winnipeg Free Press)"The subtitle of Allan Levine's ambitious history of Toronto may seem stolid as the city's British founding families, but it doesn't take long for the reader to realize how carefully chosen it is. Levine, who won high praise for his 2011 biography of Mackenzie King, treats the city as he would any biographical subject: as a constantly changing personality rooted to the historical moment by a set of defining passions, idiosyncrasies, blind spots, and complex relations with family members...This approach...serves Levine well. He announces his intentions in a very witty introduction...The book includes an excellent selection of archival images and photographs that highlights key themes and personalities...The text is also enlivened by dozens of highly quotable observations, appreciations, and put-downs from the last 200 years. The insults are especially good...Love it or hate it, Toronto is a slippery city to pin down Levine's excellent biography goes a long way to explaining why." (James Grainer Quill & Quire)"Ambitious in scope and masterful in execution, Allan Levine's panoramic portrait of our city from its beginnings to the present is sweeping and opinionated, judicious and clever, insightful and gossipy all at once. This is no dry academic survey, but a lively, popular-style "biography"...Levine excels at integrating large amounts of complex information into a flowing and satisfying narrative...bristles with insight...His summation of the Ford years (ending before Ford's dramatic withdrawal from his re-election campaign for health reasons) is simply superb...Let's face it: for a writer like Levine, a mayor like Ford is a gift from heaven. And, for all of us who love Toronto, so is this book. Toronto: Biography of a City is a timely, vibrant history of our modern megacity as it comes of age." (Bill Gladstone Canadian Jewish News)"I suspect most Americans know very little about Canada other than it forms our northern border and that its hockey team is one of the most valuable franchises in the NHL. You can repair that gap in your knowledge, for example, with Allan Levine’s Toronto: Biography of a City...For anyone who is interested in the development of a dynamic city this book will prove very entertaining." (Alan Caruba)

A little better than ok.

This is a very pleasant read, as much a cultural and social history of our city as a political one. It is not that the political history is uninteresting but the other aspects are what make it a well-rounded "biography". Allan Levine has captured Toronto's zeitgeist with humour and some pathos. I am old enough to remember the Toronto of the 40s and 50s;this book brought back a lot of the memories of that weird time.

I've been living in Toronto almost 30 years and never tire of reading books about its history. This book starts us off in the early 1600s with Étienne Brûlé, who may have been the first European to explore the Toronto area in 1615. He had arrived in Quebec with Samuel de Champlain when he was about 16 as an indentured servant. The book ends with the embarrassment that is our current (but thankfully soon-to-be-ex) mayor, Rob Ford. The chapters are:* The Carrying Place* British Muddy York* The Rebellion* A City of Courage and Green* Hogtown the Good* The Ward* Toronto the Dull* Subways, Suburbia and Paesani* The Fastest-Growing City in North America* Jane's Disciples* This is Where it's at* Multiculturalism, Merger and Mel* Megacity Machinations (or Madness)The book provides a lot of information about the people and happenings over the centuries. I liked that the information was provided a high level yet there was just enough info provided. With some things, I found that I was interested enough to Google to learn more.I liked the writing style. I find that some historical books can be boring because they read like a text book ... this one didn't. Sometimes the author seemed to get gossipy about whoever he was talking about and that was fun. Some of the information was amusing. For example, back in July 1855, an American circus was in town. Some clowns got liquored up and went to a brothel. Members of the volunteer fire brigade were also there. Nasty words were exchanged and the two groups started brawling. Drunk clowns and firemen fighting ... that would have been something to see!It was appalling how racist Toronto was (I imagine most places were and unfortunately still are), especially against Jews, Blacks and Chinese. Back in the 1930s, Velma, a white woman, was dating Harry, a Chinese guy. Because of that, she was sentenced to one year in a reformatory with thieves, prostitutes and vagrants. It's a substantial book (almost 500 pages) but I didn't find it dragged. There is a section at the end of the book with a lot of pictures, plus another section with an extensive bibliography if you want to read more about a person or event.I enjoyed this book and would recommend it if you live in Toronto or if you want to learn more about our city.Blog review post: http://www.teenaintoronto.com/2014/10/book-toronto-biography-of-city-2014.html

This book is absolutely gorgeous -- a great book for your coffee table! Levine's prose is concise and engaging, and the chapters are short and readable. The book gets better with each chapter; some of the early descriptions of Toronto are a bit dry, but later chapters about modern life in the city are fascinating. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is in love with Canada's largest (dare I say greatest!?) city!

If you (or a kid you love) is smart and hating boring school, this is the book for you! *Tons* of practical advice for how to survive when school doesn't chalenge you. This includes making up your own fun "takes" on boring homework -- as well as taking a critical look at your teacher and determining if that teacher will enjoy the joke, or has no humor and requires other tactics. So many ideas in this book keep coming up for me -- both as a parent and as a teacher.Written by a teacher, this is not a cheat book, but how to transform assignments into something more on your level.

Not what I expected.

The book is comprised of tips to do better in school (I love this format/style of writing). Since it is obviously geared toward those who are lazy, it provides essentials, albiet minimal, for success. The point here though is that these essentials create success, improving various aspects of the students academic life.I must also note that the book, when conveying its messages and warnings, does so in an entertaining manner. Like the reviewer(s) below noted, it joked that you should stroke the professor's ego. While we see how unethical it may sound, the message being demonstarted here is: be on the teacher's good side and not on their bad side. And while it sounds simple, I'm sure this leads to benefits in class because the teacher would not have a grudge against you.So in the end, the book is short, full of usable and success-brewing tips, and almost always fun and interesting.

When first looking at the book, it almost seemed impossible for such a thin book to be of much help for students. However, after reading the book [in the span of 1 hr, I might boast], I realized that this amazingly funny book can be just as equally helpful.Contrary to a former reviewer's complaint about the book merely stroking the ego of college professors, I believe [through personal experience] that being on the good side of a professor is very helpful to gaining better grades. So in the end, buy the book you lazy students, and hopefully learn a thing or two!

This book is for the bright underachiever. The dim-witted or slow of study may not appreciate its irreverence. The creative student, however, will love the everpresent humor and clever strategies. In the Foreword, the late Steve Allen describes the book as a "winning combination of wit and wisdom." I could not have said it better.

Absolutley no help for the lazy students, this book is filled with foolish stratigies that only help semi-enthused students make class more enjoyable. The techniques found in the book require at a fair amount of interest in a class. In no way could this book help a student that isnt motivated to work in school. For example, the first section is filled with ways to con a teacher into devoting their time into a mindless/useless class discussion. In what way is this motivating?

Good product. Would order again.
