From the Back Cover

We all feel fear. It is one of our most essential emotions. Regardless, fear has long been something we are taught to overcome, control, or rationalize away. We learn to ignore it or let it go. We strive to be fearless. But to what benefit? Once recognized as the best woman extreme skier in the world (an honor she held for twelve years), Kristen Ulmer knows fear well. In this conversation-changingbook, she argues that fear is not an enemy here to cause us trouble. Instead, it’s our current reaction to this misunderstood emotion that leads to trouble, causing us to be at war with it, and thus at war with ourselves. It’s time to revolutionize our relationship with fear.Ulmer explores why we have come to view fear as a negative, and the consequences of that perception. Informed by her years being “fearless” and more than fifteen years studying and teaching Zen, she goes on to unpack fear and shows that it’s just one of 10,000 voices that make up our reality, helping us come alive alongside joy, love, and gratitude. Introducing a mindfulness tool called “Shift,” Ulmer teaches us how to experience fear in a simpler, more authentic way, inviting us to be in conversation with it, transforming our relationship with this emotion from that of a draining battle into one of freedom. In The Art of Fear, Ulmer shows us how to turn to fear in an honest, considerate way. Only by examining and then shifting our relationship with fear can we finally and permanently address its underlying restraints, and set ourselves on course to living a more grounded, vibrant, and authentic life.

This book seemed to promise me a novel approach towards coping with competition anxiety (I’m a nationally competitive amateur athlete). I wanted to like this book. I was excited to start it. The reviews were glowing, and the author seemed to be someone who could speak from authority.Halfway through the book, however, I was in serious difficulty. I found myself re-reading entire sections, trying to puzzle out the author’s meaning. Finally, I decided to put the book down for 48 hours and come back to it, assuming that perhaps I needed to take a breath.Coming back two days later--feeling that I could approach the book with fresh eyes--I decided that it wasn’t me, but simply that this book was a hot mess.Ulmer starts from an excellent premise: fear is something that is inescapable, and rather than be repressed or ignored, it has to be accepted, and embraced. This is an excellent approach in many situations, especially when discussing common anxieties about social situations or performances. The approach is hardly novel (as she claims) but it is not one that is often discussed, and it certainly needs more exploration in popular books like this.Ulmer has some excellent seeds of thought in this book. However, they are buried in a tremendous amount of chatter, clumsy metaphors, outright contradictions (you will solve your relationship with fear in a few hours, but later mentions that it may take much time), and occasional segues into personal accounts which often didn't seem to relate to the point her text is trying to make. At random intervals, a zen story or koan is thrown in. Sometimes at an appropriate place, sometimes not.My impression of Ulmer is that she is someone who chose to write this book after an experience with zen--as a method or with an instructor--that resonated with her very strongly. In a rush to get her excitement about this experience on paper, she has put down 300 pages or so of nearly stream of consciousness writing that is occasionally baffling, sometimes illuminating, but mostly frustrating to read.It would have been good if her editor had accepted their own fear and had gone through this book with a much stronger hand. There is a good message in “The Art of Fear” but if you can find it, you probably have already heard it.

I would like to speak to some of the less than favorable reviews of the book. Their perspective of the flow of the book is accurate. That’s actually the point. This is an amazing book that you do not realize is amazing while you are reading it because it is not that comfortable to read. At times it is even very uncomfortable to read. Then you put it down and come back to it because you know you have to read it if you want to know what you don't know. And you do. And you are glad you did.If you want to read a literary masterpiece then buy a novel. If you want to understand your relationship with yourself and how to better navigate the human life journey then read this book!

It's easy to stay in your lane your entire life and get the expected results. Fear is something to be afraid of, the two go hand in hand. Kristen Ulmer's book challenges the reader to look at fear differently, to develop a new relationship with it, and switch lanes. Who knows where it will take you? Somewhere better, I hope. I've read the criticisms of her book, how it isn't original, etc. Whether that is the case or not (and does it matter?) her ideas are compelling, her anecdotes and words prompted "aha" moments for me, and she showed me another way of living life --- by giving the very original examples of how she has lived hers --- and the courage to look at my relationship with fear differently. I'm not a fan of self-help books, they are usually a page or two of information and 150 pages of filler that I can do without. Her book kept me interested and engaged all the way through.

Although the author makes some good points about the need to acknowledge and experience fear, I’m not sure why she feels the need to criticize other perspectives & types of treatment in order to bolster her own point of view. In fact, the need to criticize others is in her book as an indicator that there is more internal work to do. Also- comparing oneself to others (whether you come out on top or not) is still the need to compare urself to others - which is judgement - which is also in her book as an indicator that emotions are still “in the basement”.I find her pattern of generalizing lacking professionalism & awareness- “every anger management class will tell you...”, “every therapist will say...”- she appears convinced that she is the only one who would believe in the concept that fear should be acknowledged and experienced- vs. conquered or fought. “Every (fill in the blank)...” is a broad inaccurate statement and illustrates a need to stroke her own ego. It is disheartening to hear her imply that individuals on medications (given they make that choice) are less than “warriors”. And that ppl should “fire their shrink”.. under-acknowledging the connectivity, work, & opportunities one has in the therapeutic relationship. I find many statements in her book negligent and insensitive. I’m concerned for those that could benefit from the work she is trying to do.... especially bc they may pick up this book at time they are in despair and vulnerable, only to be misled at this critical time. The author limits the opportunity for this book to be useful & effective with a ‘my way is the only way’ message.

I have been a big Kristen Ulmer fan for years, her clear ability to combine what you learn from sport into powerful tools for life is a talent. Not to mention her training in with a Zen Master. When she released this book I was so excited to digest her advice and knowledge in a book format. I have more than 30 highlighted sections in this book, I'd say that's a good indication that this book delivers many insights that will shift your perspective on fear. This book gave me tangible steps for creating my own fear practice and that felt really empowering. If you're looking to be inspired and get step by step instructions for change, and not just theory, this is the book for you. You will walk away different and better for it. Thanks, Kristen!

#895,569 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This is a very good although short book (40 pages of text plus eight pages of color renderings) describing the Dutch colonial army that attempted to repel the Japanese invading army in 1941 / 1942. The army was amazingly weak, although that shouldn’t come as a surprise to readers, I suppose. It was somewhat impressive in numbers (more than 110 000 total) but weak in weaponry. It had around 140 artillery pieces, the largest comprising 75 mm howitzers. It had another 269 81 mm mortars and fewer than 900 machine guns. The Japanese 16th Army defeated this force with only three divisions plus an independent regiment totaling around 60 000 troops. A Japanese division may not have had the firepower of a US Marine division but it could certainly deal with a Dutch colonial army. It’s interesting to read some of the euphemisms in the book. The Dutch colonial army was mostly intended for “internal security operations.” In plain English, that meant keeping the natives from rebelling against their Dutch colonial overlords. It should come as no surprise, then, that many of the native troops didn’t hesitate to desert when confronted with the invading Japanese army.A minor criticism is that the one and only map of the East Indies area is on pages 34 – 35. So a reader has to go through the first 30-odd pages without really knowing where the referenced islands, cities, and ports are unless you either already know the East Indies / Indonesian geography or if you happen to leaf through the book first and discover the map.Only about six pages of the book describe the Dutch defensive plans and the Japanese invading plans. The bibliography indicates that most of the source material for the book is primary Dutch material. Some other books that offer good accounts of this and related subjects are as follows:• “The Dutch Naval Air Force Against Japan – the Defense of the Netherlands East Indies, 1941 – 1942” by Womack (2006). This book offers an excellent and detailed story of the collapse of the Netherlands East Indies (NEI) in December 1941 – March 1942 from the viewpoint of the Dutch naval air force. It includes summaries of the main naval battles and Japanese army landings as they pertain to the overall allied defeat at the hands of the Japanese. It also offers an excellent discussion of the strategic plans and operational attacks of the Japanese as they advanced toward southern Sumatra and western Java though the South China Sea via the Karimata Strait and toward eastern Java via the Makassar Strait east of Borneo and the Java Sea. It was an extremely well-planned operation and was superbly executed. Chapter 9 describes the chaos and disintegration that occurred on Java at Soerabaja (Surabaya), Batavia, and Tjiltjap as the Dutch resistance collapsed. It was at least as bad, if not worse, than what happened with the British at Singapore.• “In the Highest Degree Tragic – The Sacrifice of the U.S. Asiatic Fleet in the East Indies During World War II” by Kehn (2017). This book describes in the most detail I have found the losses of the US Asiatic Fleet as well as the British and Dutch fleet losses.• "Rising Sun, Falling Skies" by Cox (2014). This book includes maps depicting the ship tracks of some of the sea battles;• "The Massacre of ABDACOM" by Ready (2013). This is a somewhat dry, but thorough, account of the same subject as "In the Highest Degree Tragic." It offers no maps and no ship tracks of the sea battles."Darwin 1942 --The Japanese Attack on Australia" by Alford (2017). It provide the most comprehensive account I have found on the Darwin attack of February 1942;• "Fortress Rabaul -- The Battle for the Southwest Pacific January 1942 - April 1943" by Gamble (2010);• "Malaya and Singapore 1941 - 42 The Fall of Britain's Empire in the East" by Dennis (2016). There are plenty of books on the collapse of the British in Malaya and Singapore but this one offers a lot of information packed into 90 pages. It doesn't pull any punches on British political and military leadership and command incompetence, either.

In this Osprey Man-At-Arms #521, "Royal Netherlands East Indies Army 1936-1942", a blank space in allied capabilities on the eve of WWII in the Pacific has been filled in. Author Marc Lohnstein gives us a view of the Dutch military and how they prepared for the coming conflict. The NEI army was originally created for internal security, and the author gives detailed information of Dutch efforts to create an integrated force from the many ethnic/religious groups within the Dutch East Indies - now Indonesia. The book details the numbers and types of units as well as how they expanded over time to meet new threats. Obviously, command and commanders came from the Netherlands, but there were a number of interesting things peculiar to NEI.The author concisely gives the reader an idea of the numbers of troops, units, types, etc. and how they changed the closer they were to WWII. The Dutch were trying to adapt and increase their defenses but simply ran out of resources and time - especially after Holland was conquered by Germany in 1940.We get a good idea of the uniforms, the weapons and equipment including attempts to mechanize with mobile forces and armored units, buying tanks and armored cars from abroad as well as constructing APCs from locally-sourced platforms. With the exception of the air where the Dutch had only obsolete weapons, they were certainly at least as well equipped as the Japanese in terms of weaponry from light machine guns to artillery to tanks.Where they were lacking, according to Australian observers, was experienced commanders and training. Against the experienced, well-led Japanese units, they were no match. This is a good look at how a military tries to prepare for a looming threat - sometimes well with attempts at innovation, sometimes poorly in the things that really matter. This is a good book that fills in a blank in our understanding of the situation on the eve of the Japanese rampage across the Pacific. Five stars.

The Royal Netherlands East Indies Army (KNIL) was designed primarily to provide internal security within The Netherlands' vast empire in Southeast Asia. The KNIL potentially fielded a significant number of troops, but they were indifferently armed, lightly trained, and responsible for securing a massive archipelago. A modernization program was only just underway when the Japanese arrived...This Osprey Men-at-Arms Series book concisely describes the KNIL, notably including its combat support and combat service support elements. The narrative covers a lot of ground in a brief space. This reviewer would have liked a map of the Dutch East Indies up front, and perhaps some assessment of how well the Dutch-Indonesian integrated units performed in combat. As another reviewer has pointed out, this book does fill a missing space in Osprey coverage of the Pacific portion of the Second World War. Recommended.

Typical Osprey excellent packing a lot of information into a few pages. Nice drawings also. I knew nothing at all about the Dutch East Indies army and now I do. Thanks Osprey.

If you're like me and have never had any experience or knowledge in investing, m this book is perfect. For starters, it covers the basic in a no nonsense way and in simple terms that won't scare you off. I had tried to read 2 other books on investing and gave up because they were complicated and overwhelming. This book breaks into 8 chapters (that you don't necessarily have to read in order) that address the concepts separately so you don't have to sort them out. There are plenty of tips and insight throughout the book, as well as recommendations for further reading and research. It also mentions reputable investing companies and some of their benefits. This book is not going to turn you into an expert overnight but it is a good resource and a step in the right direction. It will provide options and information on which types of investing may work best for you, and also feasible. When you get the book you also have access to additional internet resources and that is always a plus. The book is nicely organized, easy to navigate and has information readily available.Book's Destiny: bought by 40 yr olds realizing they need to get money somehow to retire.

I rented this at my library and read it from cover to cover. I kept taking notes to the point were I just wanted to post-note bookmark and highlight just about every other page. So I bought me my own copy. No this book is not going to teach you how to make millions on the market, it will however, teach you what investment is all about on a near close-up level. You can then pick any of the topics he brings up and do your own deep dives. Can't recommend this book enough, if you know nothing about investing!

Full of knowledge and insight but I was hoping for a more "idiot" friendly approach.. I still found myself having to pull out the dictionary or Google to understand the "stock market jargon"

I bought this so that I could grasp some knowledge on how to look ahead for our retirement. YES, show me the way, on how to live well in our retirement age. I do think that investing is the way to go but "OH MY GOODNESS" there are so many options and pit falls to get there. So with that being said, let me just be honest " IM A DEER IN FREAKING HEADLIGHTS" when it comes to any of this. However, I think this book will be my stepping stone to get to where I want to be. So that is is a win!

Very much a bare bones minimum investment book. Great for those who know NOTHING about investing and investment types but not as meaty for those people who are not vastly knowledgeable but have a better understanding of investing. Good reading book either way

started as a very interesting read with lots of very useful tips and nice explanations of things you didn’t know you didn’t know and should know... very consisting message of saving, paying off debt research and diversify when it comes to investing... the book really stays with you as a regular person with spare money and walks you all the way to make this additional money count... some “books” are not really value adding ie “bonds” and “fundamental analysis” - too much repetition of previous books, if you don’t read this 2 books and even if you skim through the last 30% of the book you would not miss that much - I still recommend you read the first 50% so you can challenge your friend or pension advisor when they tell about the ‘next hot investment’ opportunity, it will be very rewarding when you disarm it or praise it with knowledge of numbers like return over investment, taxes, inflation

Very practical and up to date! Was one of the best investing books I have read and I have read a ton of them!

This was very helpful for my daughter

Big book! 2 x 7.5 x 9.5 inches. Must weigh three pounds. This is an updated version to be sure. Nine easy to digest parts.Twenty first century America is vastly different from that nineteenth century country. New people with new ideas. New pressures. Novel situations never experienced in the 1890s.In an increasingly congested and stressed world a little "social lubricant" can go a long way in smoothing out the run ins and run outs.Find and read the early versions if you must. I suppose in some situations that advice will be enough. To live in a modern word requires a new view of other people.

I purchased Etiquette by Emily Post many years ago, loaned it to a friend and never got it back (talk about poor manners!), so when I decided to get a new copy of it, I was delighted to discover that Peggy Post generously modernized it for our digital world. The heart of Etiquette is closely reminiscent of what we learned in kindergarten: don't butt in line, be polite, treat other people's things better than your own, etc. This is no snob book for the privileged and the preppy - it is a real-life guide on what's appropriate in every conceivable social situation and keeps you from embarrassing yourself because you don't know which fork to use or how to compose a letter to an elected official. It is written in a format that is not condescending to the reading and is easy to navigate quickly to the information you need. Today's society is in desperate need of serious guidance and reminders of how to speak to and treat others with respect (I'm looking at you, Facebookers). The Golden Rule should be this book's title and should be required teaching to everyone child in school. And a great majority of adults.

I have the original version on the kindle which is free and like it a lot even if it is so out of date. Some have observed, and so did I, that it was very prescriptive or didactic. It gave you more than the description of etiquette, but the why as well. Emily's voice came out clearly in the first edition, I felt her instructing me and others as to why we should have good manners. For example, I read the part on instructing children to have good table manners and I felt she explained why it was important and made me feel responsible for their training (she used the word and compared them to puppies). This edition as others as well are updated, thus eliminating prescription for description. It is like reading a typical how to. The part on instructing children is gone. I am not that old, but I think our society needs to know why we should have good manners or etiquette not just a list of what we should do without the moral imperative to do so. I think this edition is good for the how to, but if you are like me, stick to the older(st) edition. I like Mrs. Post's voice and instruction.

While the book is chock full of detailed what to and not to do, the most impressive points to me were the explanations of why certain etiquettes exists. Putting heart in to what's usually regarded as a mental or social game, Ms. Post breathes a life of understanding into what otherwise would be a trite lexicon of customs. To the modern individual, it promotes ideas of selfless acts and words to create a better society, just be advised of the pitfalls of judgementalism, acts for the sake of routine, and false demeanor. Putting these latter three social sins aside, the book can be quite beneficial as well as enjoyable!

Everyone should have this book on their shelf and give it a good 30-60 minute skim at some point (if not once a year). There is a huge amount to be learned for EVERYONE and you will be very surprised how many little things you notice other people doing correctly (or incorrectly) that you never noticed before. It doesn't mean you need to be a 24-7 etiquette snob, but it's great to be able to pull it out of your memory when the occasion calls for it. If I go to a nice executive business dinner now, I notice that half the people are following the subtle rules of etiquette that I never even noticed before. It's frankly a little embarrassing that I made it so long not knowing!

This book promotes kindness, politeness, and appropriateness as a lifestyle. The situations, of course, are entirely outmoded -- almost 100 years old -- but an intelligent reader can read between the lines to discern the appropriate, polite, and kind way to behave in contemporary situations. Simply because of my own interests, I particularly like Mrs. Post's observations on style and dress; her comments about fashion are spot-on, even for the 21st century. Because of changes in dress over the course of the 20th century, her list of clothing appropriate for a well-bred man can be used even for a contemporary woman to build her own wardrobe -- with reading between the lines and discernment, of course.

I saw this book at a friend's house, and was immediate intrigued. I have always enjoyed reading about etiquette and manners, and am rather particular about my own etiquette. I had to get this book! I purchased it and found it everything I had expected. If you are wanting to know what a proper place setting for a formal dinner looks like, here's your answer. If you want to know how to word an invitation, this is the place to go. If you want to know the way to properly introduce people, this book has every imaginable instance. Some things are a little bit dated. This is an older book, but most things still apply. I look at it a lot. It isn't really an entertainment read, though. Mainly reference.
