Oh, what a wonderful book!Beautiful photos, charming sketches, and a practical collection of tips and tricks from real (and real wise) grandmas!I was looking for something to share with my own mother, who is enjoying having her little granddaughter over for "sleepovers". This fits the bill perfectly.Some of the ideas - such as exploring creeks and building campfires - will likely not be a fit for the grandparent with limited mobility, but there are many gems in here that are usable for anyone, anywhere. Projects of all kinds are included, from momentary distractions to long-term projects - baking, gardening, playing, and just spending quality time together. This book is packed with memories to be made!The author's grandchildren are very lucky indeed, as are any grandchildren with a grandma who reads this book and puts it to use!

I own three of Sharon's Books and this one has been updated . She combines the use of photos with her drawings. I prefer the drawings as find them very charming. This is a book that is very helpful for grandma's who like to entertain their grandbabies and spend more time doing things that involve them and keep them intellectually stimulated so it is a great little book of resources and very appealing. It is a book that brings joy to being a grandparent and also to the grandchildren. It has a ton of activities in it. The appealing aspect is that none are really difficult to do.It is a good follow up to her other book called Roots, Shoots and Buckets and Boots which is one of my favorites.I highly recommend both of these books if you are looking for ideas and also if you like to have a tangible book to look at and to read. I am in love with Sharon Lovejoy's books. I highly recommend them all.These are a collection of pretend-play ideas, outdoor discoveries, woodsy crafts, old fashioned games, and even some recipes that all help us meditate upon the forgotten luxury of simple living.Many of the activities guide you through the types of outdoor play you may have long forgotten since becoming a curmudgeonly old adult. Lovejoy makes fairies come alive again and mudpies seem like culinary masterpieces.There are various suggestions about how to create a cozy, child-friendly oasis within your home - stashing dress up clothes in a large trunk, keeping a large basket full of books in every room, bringing nature indoors.The illustrations throughout these books are so charming - watercolor sketches reminiscent of Beatrix Potter, which is perfectly suited to the content of the books.Visit my parenting blog for more great book recommendations similar to this one. I saw this wonderful book several years ago at a local garden center but had no reason to buy it. I recently ordered when I learned I was going to be a grandma. This book has great ideas for a grammy who loves nature, gardening and providing fun and unique experiences for their grandkids. It's 25 years since I've had a child under 5 so I've gotten out of the habit of creative fun. This book is a great guide.

Lots of excellent activities and ideas to encourage quality time with my grandchildren. Sharon Lovejoy reminds me how to think like a child again and see the world through their eyes, sadly something long forgotten for me.

My mom lives pretty far away from both of her grandgirls. She was ecstatic to receive this as a gift. It has tons of cute ideas including some fun things for grandparents to do when their grandchildren don't live near by. It is better for kids 5 and up but there are some cute ideas. For the baking/cooking ideas, the recipes are pretty easy to adapt for kids with food allergies which is always nice. I highly recommend this as a gift to give grandma or grandpa some cute, fun ideas on how to create a meaningful experience with their grandchildren when they come to visit.

Interesting ideas, helps for those who aren't as crafty in mind for little kids. Makes excellent gift for those new grandma's

I loved this book and best of all so did my granddaughters. One is 7 and one is 4 and they both looked at it and were very eager and ready to start several of the projects talked about in this book. Plus we all loved the illustrations.

Harry Davis has studied the art of Tasha Tudor for almost thirty years. As Tasha's friend and collaborator for the past decade, he initiated her landmark exhibition at the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Center in Williamsburg. Binding: “Perfect”, i.e. signatures trimmed to single pages, then glued.Photographer Jay Paul has done a fine job capturing the moods of the two very expressive dolls made by Ms. Tudor, “Captain Thaddeus Crane”, (who looks like Henry David Thoreau), and “Emma Birdwhistle”. Also, atmospheric views of objects within the house, and, in a separate section, a selection from the collection in brightly lit photos.I like many aspects of the book design, but object to the diagram of the house with the room of the chapter shaded, useful as it is, taking a whole page at the beginning of each chapter. It could have been shrunk down to take the place of the four tiny unreadable photo details placed next to the restatement of each chapter title, leaving the facing page for another large picture or two. Also, I don’t believe in double-page spreads. The gutter down the middle ruins one’s ability to understand the picture. All of the full-room pictures are two-page spreads.But then, the rooms don’t have much architectural distinction. They are a group of restrained room boxes made to showcase the collection, not a model of a house that might draw away interest for itself. And being so large, already dominating the exhibition gallery as it reportedly did, it couldn’t be given full depth.The title of the book is a bit of a misnomer. It is not really Tasha Tudor’s dollhouse, but The Tasha Tudor Dollhouse At The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Center, Williamsburg, Virginia. The house was specially built, with her collaboration, to display Ms.Tudor’s collection of miniatures, and, because the scale of the objects is “one-fourth human size”, not the usual dollhouse one-twelfth, (so the dolls must be nearly a foot and a half tall), the house was too large to go home with Ms. Tudor once the special exhibition “Take Joy! The World Of Tasha Tudor” closed, six months after the opening date Nov. 2, 1996.Harry Davis’s text states, “...over the course of more than seventy-seven years...the dolls have changed residences many times...one doll or another has left...to go with a grown child, perhaps to start another miniature version of a life…” “Since building Corgi Cottage in 1971, Tasha had not had a dollhouse large enough to house the entire collection. She had room settings in built-in cases along a wall adjacent to her bedroom.”Perhaps someday a book will come out detailing the history of Tasha Tudor’s family’s collections of miniatures, dolls, and the houses for them, past and present.The last four pages of the book are occupied by a chronological listing of Ms. Tudor’s books, 1938 to 1999, (she died 2008). It’s not the full biographer’s-researcher’s bibliography you’d find at the end of a biography, that would include her works outside of books, and articles about her in magazines and newspapers, but it is quite a nice thing to have.The text does mention a 1955 LIFE magazine article covering Thaddeus’s first marriage, to “Melissa Shakespeare”, the doll that inspired the book A Is For Annabelle. It may be seen in GoogleBooks. It was in the Sept. 12th issue, four pages of black and white photos by Verner Reed.

Love Tasha Tudor. Enjoyed this book about her dollhouse

The photos of the dollhouse are fantastic. It is a one-quarter-scale version of Tasha Tudor's own earlyeighteenth-century-style home in Vermont. Each room is a double page. Followed by pages of close-ups and descriptions. Wonderfully inspiring!

If you can't own an expensive doll house - get this wonderful book to pour over. Totally great!

Great reference book.

I saw this book in a store in Vermont while on vacation. I knew I wanted it. I have always been a fan of Tasha Tudor, even before I realized I grew up a couple of miles from her Vermont home. This book shows another side of her many talents and keeps alive the past for those to come.

A must have if you are a Tasha Tudor Fan. It is her life in the dollhouse with all the replica furnishings. Awesome.

Author seems to use secondary sources for her book: newspaper articles and other authors; work. She divides the book into periods but many of them overlap so the reader never gets a real understanding of what Bechtel was doing when. The author has an agenda in coloring Bechtel in the most unfavorable light: this corporate behemoth was bad because it was big. Little credit is given for the corporation's undertaking during the period of the Cold War when the US as a whole and in a bipartisan way was fighting Communism and when the CIA's actions were necessary. The most interesting part of the book and less biased part is the description of the corporation's early history and the founder's early endeavors.

I'll start by first saying that the book itself is enjoyable as Bechtel does keep a very low profile and is clearly a major player in this country's history at least as it pertains to construction.Where I have to slap the author down is in her many implications she makes whereby the tail is wagging the dog. Iraq War.... because Bechtel wanted rebuilding contracts. Tolerating Saddam in the 80s... because Bechtel wanted to build a pipeline. The list goes on, but long story short the author goes to great lengths to imply Bechtel is some sort of Machiavellian puppet master behind the scenes without flat out saying it. It's lying without lying and implying conclusions on an extremely thin basis.The author would've had a great book just telling the story of Bechtel. Her many implications of malevolent profiteering at the expense of the country rather than just a company selling its country the goods and services policy makers at the time wanted smack of yellow journalism.

While heavily researched, the author had a very clear anti-Bechtel bias, and focused on the items that reinforced that, and minimized other issues. The hyperbole style detracts from the message.

Not easy writing a book about a behemoth corporation that is family controlled and a closed book culture. If you think you know Bechtel, you don't. Ms Denton has an octopus far bigger than anyone imagines and she does a good job of getting her journalistic arms around this vast story. Anyone interested in the intertwining relationship between corporate America and government (on all levels state as well as federal) will find rich reading. "I never realized"...." I didn't know that" are frequent reactions even if you thought you knew.

An in depth exposition of how business and government have colluded to exploit other countries. Denton does a particularly good job connecting the dots between Bechtel and the deep state.

This is a truly fascinating story about how a company with a household name in the construction industry has survived almost a century with family members running it while amassing billions for doing things that the political elites in both parties wanted done around the world.

First off,I'm not a fan of the Saints but I had heard enough about Drew Brees and the struggles he faced in his career that when this book was on sale on amazon kindle...I bought it to readI have to say, I enjoyed the book for the most part. A bit of it was repeated in various chapters and that got old rather quickly. Since I read the book in only a few settings I felt like the reiteration of stories that had been mentioned in previous chapters was just too much. It was almost like a page count had to be obtained because a LOT of these pages could have been edited out.The story itself of his career is encouraging. I never knew he faced so many personal injuries in the beginning of his career. It was neat to read about this and how he overcame those.What I liked the most about this book is how he doesn't shy away about talking about his faith in God and his Christianity. In the world we live in it seems that society frowns upon anyone being vocal about their faith. I do wish he had expounded on that aspect a bit more rather than a brieft mention here and there. Granted it is an underlying theme...through out the book... I just would have liked to have read more about that aspect of his and his family's life in depth

I enjoy reading biographies/memoirs. It usually gives me greater insight into a persons make up. This book caused me to look at Drew Brees in a whole new light. It deals with his on field exploits of course, but it deals more with the off the field details and what kind of person he is. Much time is spent detailing his religious faith and the role GOD plays in Drew's life. I found this book very fascinating. While I respected him before, I admire Drew Brees much more now. Even though I root for a different team, I will find myself pulling for Drew and the Saints when the balls start flying in the fall. I reccommend this book very highly. It is encouraging and uplifting as well as inspirational. The book is written in a style that just seems to flow. At night I would hate to put it down for fear of missing out on something. Two thumbs way up on this one. Read it my friends---you'll be blessed.

An exceptionally well written memoir, COMING BACK STRONGER kept my attention throughout and made me admire this decent, driven athlete and family man. It has enough football for a fan like me, but not too much for the non-fan, and enough religion for the mildly religious like me, without too much. Hats off to Super Bowl Champ and MVP Drew Brees and his collaborator, Chris Fabry, for this fine contribution to inspirational nonfiction literature.Drew and his wife, Brittany, agree: the blow that doesn't crush you makes you stronger.Drew sums up this way: "Finish strong. It is not where you start in life, but rather how you finish. It's that last play that can make all the difference in the outcome."

How true and especially applicable to those of us over 50, out of work for more than six months wondering not WHEN but IF we will EVER work again! Like Drew Brees we have paid our dues, become well educated, expertly trained in our respective fields with many years of experience yet because of a set of negative circumstances i.e. serious injuries in his case; a poor economy, unfavorable politics or some other (hidden from us) reasons in ours. we find ourselves in a seemingly hopeless position with a bleak future.For those who do not know, Drew Brees is the 2009 Super Bowl MVP-winning quarterback for the New Orleans Saints. A 2001 graduate of Purdue University, he initially played for the San Diego Chargers. As he writes in the book's Epilogue: "My dream was to win a championship with San Diego and play my whole career with that one team. That didn't happen--it wasn't the plan. And it took a devastating injury to tear me away from that city." At one point Drew Brees actually believed he might NEVER be allowed to play football again. Yet, in the end, as he further writes: "A step back is not necesarily a setback. Sometimes you have to take a few steps backward before you can get the momentum to jump over a chasm in your life." Brees tells the reader: "When people think you're not big enough, not smart enough, not wise enough, or not experienced enough for a task, remember that faith will carry you through....It is not where you start in life, but how you finish. It's that last play that can make all the difference in the outcome" and "...when you least expect it...opportunity will present itself." As we all know now, Drew Brees ended up being named 2004 Comeback Player of the Year, 2006 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year and 2008 Offensive Player of the Year. On February 7, 2010 he led the Saints to their first World Championship against the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLIV. Through all of it Drew Brees believed: "It was the fact that God was with me every step of the way. I had a strong belief that no matter what happened, things were going to work out for the greater good."After retiring in Miami in 2004 after 28 years of military service, my husband, still not of (civilian) retirement age, was hired to work at Fort Stewart, Georgia. In an effort to be a "good" supportive wife I had to leave an outstanding job in Miami to follow him here. It took nine months for me to find a job at Winn Army Community Hospital located on the same post. Sad to say, however, my father's physical health worsened in the summer of 2007. My mother requested assistance and I asked my superiors for Leave Without Pay to help care for him. This was denied so I resigned to be with my father in his final days. Since that time I have not been able to get another job. It really feels like being punished for choosing to do the right thing. Now after three years of unemployment it really does feel like I will never work again. Yet after reading this book and seeing what the Saints winning of the Super Bowl did fo the City of New Orleans, I really feel inspired. There may be hope for me (any many like me) yet.I love when Brees writes: "The tougher the journey, the sweeter the celebration at the end..don't forget that adversity is not your enemy. It can unleash a power in your life that will make you stronger and help you achieve amazing things--things you may have never thought possible--until now." He goes on to say: "DON'T GIVE UP. The worst thing that could happen in life is not getting kicked down; it's getting knocked down and STAYING down." For those of us like myself it CAN indeed be hard to believe that we will ever work again. I mean a study by the National Employment Law Project clearly informs us that "older workers -- those 45 and up -- make up the largest slice of the long-term unemployed". Additionally, the proportion of people jobless for six months or more has grown in the past year and now makes up 46 percent of the unemployed. With statistics like these, it is really hard NOT to give up.Brees advises the reader that in order to come back after a disappointment and accomplish something good you have to believe in something bigger than yourself: "I clung to the belief that if God calls you to it, he will give you the power to walk through it. He will give you the tools required to accomplish the task. He will give you the heart, the resolve and the fortitude you need....Having hope in the Lord means I trust his plan and believe he's never going to put anything in front of me that's too hard to handle with his help. BE FLEXIBLE enough to know when you're being led in another direction, and then follow that new vision with all your heart. You are being led there for a reason...You have to look around and believe that the negative stuff is there to strengthen you and can successfully lead to a big break. But you have to be on the lookout for it, and you have to keep believing that God can work in the midst of even the most trying circumstances...You can come back...even stronger."

I am a Saints fan anyway and just love Drew Brees. I knew he was a really wonderful person, and I suspected that he is a Christian, but I didn't know for sure until I read his book. He certainly is a Christian and believes everything that happens/happened in his life has God's hand in it. So well written by a very nice person. Even if you aren't a Saints fan, but like reading true stories that are about a Christ lead life, you will enjoy his story! It probably helps if you like football too!
