Do you like to play? Of course you do, but “the way kids play has changed.” Perhaps you’ve talked to your parents or grandparents and asked them what they used to do for fun. I bet anything some of them played with marbles, but you may prefer video games. Check out the picture of the boy and girl having a good time with their games. It might be hard to believe, but some people used to take a couple of cans and tie them together with string or twine. Just think that when they played, they used them as phones. Those can phones are way different than a cell phone. Hello! Hello!Perhaps you could show an older person how to use a cell phone and they might show you how to make those can phones. Think they would even work? Mmmmm! You’ll just have to ask someone if they ever tried using them. A really long time ago kids “used to roll hoops on the ground for fun ... [trying] to keep the hoops moving.” In this book you’ll be able to check out some old toys and games, but also some that you might use today. Are there any old toys and games you think you just could enjoy playing with? If you see some of the kids using them in this book, the answer just might be a big yes! This is an high-interest chapter book that young readers will be fascinated with. Almost every child has an older friend or family member with memories of toys once used in this book. Of course any conversations started will connect two or more generations. Children will also learn the basic setup of a nonfiction book, something that will carry with. them as their reading skills advance. This book has both full color and black and white photographs as well as small circular sidebars with both simple and critical-thinking questions. In the back of the book is an index, a pictorial glossary, a Then and Now section, and additional recommended book resources to explore. This would be an excellent conversation-starting book for circle or story time in a library or classroom setting.Age Range: 4 to 7 yearsGrade Level: Preschool to Grade 1PAST AND PRESENT:Communication Past and PresentHomes Past and PresentLibraries Past and PresentSchools Past and PresentToys and Games Past and PresentTransportation Past and PresentThis book courtesy of the publisher (to the library).

I have most if not all of Marks books. I learn something from all of them. With them on my Kindle they go with me everywhere so I can go back and review them where ever I am. They are not only educational but entertaining, most of the books out there are dry and just talks about metal detecting which is alright and you do learn from them. Mark not only talks about the best machines to use for whatever detecting you are into but he throws in his own experiences and makes them interesting and fun to read.

I have several of Mark's books, and in "Metal Detecting Gold" Mark hits another home run. Mark explains in both layman's terms and also delves into the somewhat more advanced instruction on researching and hunting gold --- his down to earth writing is enjoyable to read. Mark removes the mystery and confusion that many have on hunting gold .... and covers everything from origins to locations to movement to research and recovery. Any serious metal detectorist will have a certain number of books on the subject in his library -- This book belongs among the top three. This book alone is its own treasure; I do not make that statement lightly.Cas in and near Wyoming.

Myself, I loved this book. Mr. smith throws in humor, that to many may seem silly, that I fond helped me contect more with the author and real life in general. In addition he gives great information on detectors as well as detecting. I've found myself a student of gold prospecting and learning the craft and his refresher on knowledge of finding gold was totally a bonus! It is a member of my reference library now.

If you think you might be interested in metal detecting for gold, but you're not sure it's for you, you will be sure after reading this book. I sure was! The author gives what I feel is a fair appraisal of what's involved - the pros and cons - the risks and rewards. I think seasoned detectorists could learn from the book also. There is a mind-boggling assortment of detectors on the market for finding gold and the author "wades" through them all (at least it's a pretty complete list) - touching on how they work, price, etc. He explains how gold finding detectors differ from other detectors; how and where to find gold; and much more. I highly recommend it.

This has been the best book on gold hunting that I have read so far. I don't have a detector, but it gives information relating to general gold hunting. Very informative, various information on detectors, the different technologies, how to find gold, where to sell, etc...

Awesome read. Very informative and useful for finding gold. I live near Dahlonega Georgia where the first major US gold rush occured, before the California gold rush of 1849, and there's still lots of gold in them there hills!!! The book is helping me to find it!!!

I'm a beginner so this was a good basic overview of the fundamentals of finding gold. It injects some humor and overall is a good resource for the price. Easy to read with some basic diagrams

Well writen and valuable info for first timers like me. Also fun to read

With the new foods, her own bed, eating with a fork, using a toothbrush (instead of her fingers and some salt), walking on grass (instead of rice paddies), and learning that the lights in the nighttime sky are stars instead of bombs, it's her adjustment to a foreign land and an adopted family that proves most fascinating."―Booklist "Last Airlift is the story of an heroic deed, of one young girl's courage and resourcefulness when she most needs it, and of the ending she could not foresee...Highly Recommended."―CM Magazine "[The] biographical approach helps to humanize a war that, for most readers, may seem like ancient history, and the tight focus on the airlift and Tuyet's first days with the Morrises reminds readers that they are sharing the experiences of an agemate."―Bulletin for the Center for Children's Books "Marsha Forchuk Skrypuch never strays from Tuyet's child-centered perspective in recounting her experiences. In an author's note, Skrypuch describes interviewing Tuyet (obviously now an adult), who found that she remembered more and more of the past as she talked. Dialogue takes this narrative out of the category of pure nonfiction, but Tuyet's story, with its occasional black-and-white illustrations, is no less affecting because of it."―Cooperative Center for Children's Book Choices "Enhanced with documents and a surprising number of photographs, Airlift is a touching, multi-layered experience. The strength of Skrypuch's storytelling shows strongest in the smallest details."―Smithsonian Institute Book Dragon "Black and white photographs and documents supplement this biographical tale. Told from the point of view of this eight year old girl, the story is quite informative and compelling. Readers who enjoy biographies will find much to admire in Tuyet."―Youth Services Book Review (Publisher)

excellent

great book

Last Airlift by Marsha Skrypuch is a non-fiction account of Tuyet's experience as a Vietnamese orphan. As I read the author's notes in the back, I was even more amazed at this story. Originally, Skrypuch set about to write an historical fiction story about the last airlift from Vietnam bringing children to Canada. As she talked with Tuyet, who had repressed her childhood memories of leaving Vietnam, her story re-emerged and Last Airlift became a non-fiction book about Tuyet.Tuyet had lived at an orphanage for several years before she was airlifted out of the country. Since most of the children at the orphanage were babies, Tuyet was considered a helper and had to care for the younger children. Although she was scared on the plane, another older child, Linh, joined her and the two helped care for the scared and crying babies. When she arrives in Canada Tuyet is adopted by a kind family who already has two adopted children and one biological child. In Last Airlift her experiences in the first days in Canada are recounted as she tries numerous new and strange things.Tuyet's story helped make the stories of Vietnamese orphans airlifted from their country more personal. I think a lot of my students would be amazed by this story- they love books that are "real" (their words) and would be rooting for Tuyet to find happiness.

This book has wide double-spaced lines and relatively narrow pages. It's more like a 50-page book than a 100-page one. It was an interesting first-person perspective on what it's like to grow up in an orphanage until you're taken to a foreign land to be adopted. It would have been nice if the book had been significantly longer and included more on her adjustment.

I absolutely love this book. Computer Science is my hobby, and a major part of my profession; thus making this book indispensable in terms of providing historical value to understanding CS roots. Reading this work has opened my mind to pioneers such as Charles Sanders Pierce, the father of pragmatism, and his numerous collections of philosophic, logical and mathematical writings. Furthermore, there is an endless array of notable reads that should be attempted; and not just by those who study computer science. For example, the writings of Euclid, George Boole, Russel Bertrand and much more. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to "feel" what computer science truly is. Alan Turing's work is so influential and most people fail to realize its significance. Therefore do yourself the favor and pick this book up, you will not regret it, and likely it will help shape your mind as it did mine. Enjoy!

The best thing about this book is it will leave you hungering for more details from e.g. Martin Davis' Computability and Unsolvability.A Turing Machine in this book is described differently from what you'd find in Charles Petzold's The Annotated Turing. Instead of being in tabular form it's described by a "state diagram." These diagrams are introduced to describe finite automata, and a Turing Machine is presented as a finite automaton with additional capabilities. So in addition to accepting and non-accepting states that halt, a TM can also diverge (not halt). It's an appealing way to learn about TMs.The author is a mathematician, but you don't need experience reading definition-theorem-proof textbooks. In fact there's a section toward the end of the book titled Proof by Contradiction containing a thorough proof that sqrt(2) is not a rational number.I had a few "that's cool as s**t" moments while reading the book. One example is the tag system for the modified Collatz function. There were a couple places in the book I found unconvincing due to the introduction of an underspecified new type of TM. The multi-tape TM in the section RAMs Can Be Emulated by Turing Machines, Chap 6. And the TM that depends on the results of two other TMs running simultaneously in parallel in the proof on page 117.Professor Bernhardt is an excellent writer and Turing's Vision is a fine introduction to computation.

This is an excellent book on Turing and computability. It explains the halting problem in an intuitive and clear manner that I could not find in dozens of other books and papers. The author is able to highlight the important ideas that are the foundations of computability. The style is clear, readable and friendly. The length of the book is also very reasonable. I wish he explained more clearly the difference between the Entscheidungsproblem (proved impossible by Turing) and formal completeness (proved impossible by Godel). Nonetheless, this is an excellent book, for which I congratulate the author for such a wonderful work.

Turing's Vision gives the reader an overview of the logic required to understand the foundations of computability and computer science. Most works on Turing for the popular audience focus on his remarkable life but in this book the author tries to convey the core ideas of what computability is how computation can take place and the limits on what is computable. The author gives a history of where mathematical logic stood at the turn of the century and takes the reader through how Turing solved a major outstanding problem posed by Hilbert. The book is accessible to the general audience but this is a mathematical text so patience is often required. The book starts out by describing the world in the early 20th century from a mathematicians perspective. In particular the author covers topics like the goal of formalizing all of mathematics so that any statement could be proven or disproven within that system as well as the entscheidungsproblem, which was effectively the halting problem. The author goes through the foundations of arithmetic and gives a quick overview of things like Gödel's results on the incompleteness of any mathematical system to describe itself fully using its axioms. The author covers the history as well as people working on these logic questions and gives a rough overview of who was working on what to the reader. The author then goes on to describe finite automata, a computational system which can answer a wide array of questions and the author also shows what cannot be computed by finite automata. The author describes Turing machines and how they cover and extend the boundaries of what can be computed by finite automata as well as what things like polynomial time and NP problems are. Though not comprehensive the book remains accessible so its definitely quite refreshing for the non-mathematician reader. The author then spends time on some more formal mathematics, in particular lambda calculus, a system of computing that is equivalent to Turing's more intuitive machine. Parts of the book like this add to completeness but can be skipped over by the reader less interested in all the logical structure behind the ideas. The author spends time on how to correspond Turing machines to finite automata. It is quite remarkable how certain problems are easily solved in one system but incredibly complicated in others. Modern computer architecture is covered briefly so theory becomes practical but these details are covered quite casually. The author then goes back to logic to cover the initial question posed at the beginning and goes through logical paradoxes when one looks at sets which refer to themselves. This concept is shown to be relevant for programs which are trying to decide on whether programs will halt or not and that impossibility is why the halting problem cannot be solved. The mathematical side of the book is furthered toward the end as the author spends time on understanding diagonalization arguments that are required to follow Turing's original argument. The author then goes on to discuss what can be computed as a consequence of these results from counting and cardinality. The author ends with a brief history of Turing and his work and life, it is very brief so just ties actual events to the book.Turing's Vision is a introduction to the foundational logic required to understand what a turing machine can and cannot do and what the nature of computation is. The reader gets a sense of the limits of what can be answered by a computer and why. There are other books which have a similar reader level like The Annotated Turing for example which are very good but this book focuses more on the logic side rather than deciphering the paper that Turing wrote. For the more technically inclined reader this is recommended but it is approachable for those who are willing to go through some more formal arguments

good story

I was hoping for more about the development of computer technology, sort of a timeline. The author tried to simplify the concepts and terms used in this field, but I still had trouble following it. But that's because of my own limitations grasping abstract processes.

What an outstanding, ground-up view of the technology and thinking that informs an increasing amount of how and what tools we use virtually every day to make decisions and, well, live.

With 'Soviet T-54 Main Battle Tank' James Kinnear and Stephen L. “Cookie” Sewell are setting a standard for technical analyses of modern Soviet armor. As done in their previous T-10 book, initial chapters cover the tank's overall design history, trials and operational service entry, with main bulk of the text devoted to T-54 technical/engineering development and type characteristics. Extensive and superb photographic documentation with attendant captioning is provided of each sequential type variant (Model 1947, Model 1949, Model 1951, T-54A, T-54B), including those examples preserved at museums or memorials, along with detailed reproductions of original engineering drawings, and color profiles illustrating paint schemes of selected tanks. The rare (only 77 manufactured) SU-122-54 assault gun, ZSU-57-2 self propelled anti-aircraft gun, combat engineer MTU-12 bridge layer, PT-54 mine trawl, BTR-2 mine clearing (rebuilt and converted from old T-54s) and BTS-2 recovery vehicles, along with other individual experimental / developmental T-54-based derivatives and 'Obiekt' projects are also covered in detail. The book's appendices include a T-54 Model 1949 cutaway diagram by graphic artist Andrey Aksenov, and a table listing known customers and users of the T-54 with numbers obtained and-or produced.A must have volume for Cold War historians, modelers and tank/automotive/technology enthusiasts about the template vehicle for what became the world's most-produced tank. (As reviewer Andrew Dextras also noted) Osprey Publishing is to be highly commended for bringing works of this caliber to market. Hopefully other titles are yet to come in a manner which can do for Russian armor studies what Hunnicutt and Spielberger did for U.S. and World War II German AFVs, respectively.

Just as their 1st volume uncovered a plethora of previously undiscovered (in the West at least ), facts about the T-10 tank, this new volume on the T-54 begins what I hope will be a long series of books on the modern Soviet/Russian main battle tanks. This particular volume on the T-54 is of significant importance as it traces the development of what would be considered the first "main battle tank" the world had seen and would set in motion similar design shifts from the Western powers (ie: no more light, medium and heavy tanks...just a single MBT capable of being mass produced and deployed). The text is very well written and researched, photos are chosen in consequence with the text and most are just great modelling references as well. The decision to NOT make this a condensed book about the T-54 AND T-55 was brilliant as otherwise it would have diluted its impact as there are simply to many subvariants and nuances as these AFVs became modernised over the years. I would suspect that both Kinnear and Sewell would have had their say in this decision as the sheer volume of data in their possession, both being extremely well known and respected in the AFV research community for their knowledge on the subject, with the foresight that condensing this into a T54/55 book would have either resulted in a watered down mess or a 500 page tome (think price point). In any case, the end result is a unabashed success and I look forward to T-55, T-62, T-64, T-72 et al from these 2 authors. Note to Osprey : please continue to support these efforts, you are on the right "track" here and these volumes are a significant paradigm shift from the usual 64 page quick reads (although very good on themselves), for the serious AFV historian, great value for the money and in this case, the right combination of highly knowledgeable and credible authors. Nice colour plates too as well...bonus!

I am potentially biased because I work with the author but I think Jon does an excellent job summarizing the most important components of AR. While terminology is debated amongst the various players in the market, the opportunity and challenges of AR tech are well documented in this book, as well as the history and engineering/scientific aspects. I read it on Kindle Paperwhite.

The content of this book is exceptional. It reads like a draft copy at some points. Would be nice to see a 2nd edition in the future.

Review

“Cardosa does for wait staff what Anthony Bourdain did for kitchens: he exposes the ugly side of food service from the perspective of those working on the front lines. And he puts the potential restaurant customer on notice that someone is watching and recording their bad behavior.” —Shelf Awareness

A truly enjoyable slice of life in the service industry by Darron Cardosa. His blog is phenomenal, but the way he has turned his experiences into a book is specifically worthy of praise. There have been lots of books that came from blogs, but unlike some of the others, you can tell that he has a genuine love of and aptitude for writing in both formats. Anyone who has ever had to work with the public, food service or not, will relate to the struggle, frustration, and exceptional joys of working with a quirky cast of characters to serve yet another quirky cast of characters. With the occasional celebrity appearance and flashback to his early days, the author truly has something to say and the flair to keep us spellbound while he does. Anyone can bitch about work, and we all often do. But Cardosa conveys in a genuine, eloquent manner that beyond his moniker, he loves what he does. As I read this, I was reminded, in a way that I had temporarily forgotten, that I also love what I do. Especially compared to the cost of the therapy you might otherwise need to come to that realization, this book is a steal.

I spent many years in the restaurant business, both in the front and the back of the house. I am retired from all of that now, but if there is one thing I took away from it all, it was how to NOT be an a-hole as a restaurant customer.I have been a fan of the Bitchy Waiter blog for years, and often identified with what he writes about. This book did not disappoint. He is funny, profane (yes, he does drop the F-bomb a lot, but wouldn't you in his situation?), and truthful. This book should be required reading for anybody who ever sets foot in a restaurant at all, ever.Buy this book, enjoy it, and please be sure to tip your server when you go out to eat!

Full Disclosure: When I was 19, I was dying for a pizza and I had just enough to order one so I did and I didn't have any left over for a tip and the delivery guy wasn't subtle in his disgust. And why should he have been? This was over a quarter of a century ago and I still, to this day, feel badly about it and never forgot it. So while this book and blog certainly did not recover any memories, it does make me feel worse and I wish i could find that guy now and make it up to him."The Bitchy Waiter" isn't just a "Best of" Cardosa's highly addictive "Bitchy Waiter" blog that keeps me laughing every day - even though it is filled with some of the most memorable moments of his years waiting tables and dealing with the good, the bad and the very ugly. The oh so ugly. There's also new material, funny asides, photo commentary. I received my book the other night and as I am taking a trip in the next few days, I thought, "How perfect, I will read this as I travel!" Well, the best laid plans of mice and men. I am already halfway through and I can't stop laughing. But underneath Cardosa's funny stories and quick wit are some really hard truths. The way people treat service staff, just the casual disregard and rudeness can be really disheartening. You see it in the comments section on Cardosa's blog all the time: "Why are we expected to tip you? I don't get tips at my job!" (That's probably because you get a full wage, you dunderhead.) People seem to think if you're a server, you've somehow "failed" in life or are in transit. Cardosa makes it clear, many people are prety happy being exactly where they are. Sp why be a bitchy waiter? Please. Take any job you've ever been in, add "bitchy" before the job title, write a book and there you go. You can do it too. Cardosa just got there first, he's most likely a lot funnier than you.Highly recommended for everybody to read this book. Give a copy to your friend who is rude to servers. Anonymously send it to the person who is a lousy tipper. Maybe you'll start to feel much more empathy for the people who wait on you and you'll stop saying, "When you've got a minute..."

Been in the business for 35 years. This is the book I started- but never finished writing years ago! It's all spot on. People not in the industry need to read this to learn how to behave in restaurants. By the way the title of my book was coincidentally going to be called The Customer is Not Always Right: how to get the service you deserve when dining out. Great job, Bitchy! At times I laughed until my stomach hurt.

I was in F&B for 45 years and Bitchy has hit the nail on the head. Chapter after chapter he lays out what servers face every single day. He is also, hysterically funny, and I scared my cat several times because I laughed so hard! These things he talks about I faced every day and it really does wear on you even if you DO love making people happy! Some, you just can not.I read every "insider" waiter/server book I can find and THIS is the best one ever!!Buy it, get yourself a glass of wine, and settle in to be amused, amazed, and occasionally, disgusted by the patience it takes to deal with the public in a situation they will never understand.I still have dreams about a full restaurant, I'm the only one there, and the kitchen is miles away!!! Server Dreams are real........

As a customer who has never been the server, I find The Bitchy Waiter's commentary both refreshing & entertaining! While some of his observations may seem heartless, they nevertheless illustrate the endless harsh realities faced by service people every day. Likewise, he brilliantly shows us that servers are real people who deserve our respect for doing something that many of us could never do.I absolutely LOVE the epilogue, "dessert!" It's relevanteven to those of us NOT in the restaurant industry & it gives me hope that I, too, can be proud of who I am & what I do, and that if I work for it, I can realize my own dreams!
