This book is based on true events. Much of the story is taken directly from court transcripts and police investigation paperwork. It is a fascinating story, nearly unbelievable at times. I think what makes this story even more compelling is the fact that justice could be so blind to the facts.Mr. Farris does an incredible job of telling this story and does it in such a way that makes it hard to put down. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
In 1931, Honolulu was a racial tinder box and when Thalia Massie, the wife of a naval officer and member of a prominent East Coast family, reported she had been assaulted by 5 Hawaiian males the fire was started. Initially, she said she had been aassaulted (and had a broked jaw to prove it) but could no more than identify her assailants as Hawaiian. But gradually her story (aided by a vigorous, but inept investigation) changed and she said she had been gang raped and was able to identify most of the rapists. There was little evidence to support her new version of events and the 5 young men charged had strong alibis. A deadlocked jury simply increased tensions. Whle the defendants were awaiting a new trial and on bail, one was kidnapped and beaten by sailors. Another defendant, Joe Kahahawai, was kidnapped and murdered by the Massie family and their cohorts. The subsequent trial resulted in the very fair manslaughter verdicts for the 5 defendants. After they were sentenced, they were escorted to the territorial governor's office where their 10 year sentences were commuted to 1 hour. They spent their sentences snacking. A subsequent full scale Pinkerton investigation (which the Territory had the good grace to fund) fully established the innocence of the 5 victims of callous injustice. Mr.Farris does a good job retelling this sordid tale.
Just started reading the book. This happened before I was born, never freely discussed. Want to read this author's perspective.***Just finished this book! My take away is a better understanding of the court system at that time. How the USA government "looked down" on the Hawaiians and "local ethnic groups" or should I just say"non-whites", that still prevails albeit not so obvious.Mahalo, Mike Farris, for all your research and presenting it in a way that I wasn't left as angry as I was when I read other books on this horrible event... Now I realize why our governor, Mr. Judd, chose to commute their sentences instead of making them do the prison time. But better than a pardon! Not happy about it, but now I know why. Again, a big Mahalo (THANK YOU), for writing this book. I encourage all locals to read this book as well. Maybe it will help us heal the anger of injustice done against Hawaiians with a better understanding.
It was an interesting and entertaining book. It was a good balance of story versus background. The author managed to present a supported factual story without creating a dry history book. The presentation of the characters was a little too black and white for me and detracted from the credibility of the conclusions. It is a lesser heard example of racism and helps to provide an understanding of some of the tensions between native Hawaiians and white people that still exist today.
A fascinating story that broke my heart. Too often, the history of racism in the US is centered exclusively on the South. Unfortunately, racism was prevalent throughout the country (think about the struggle of Native Americans) and, in 1931, it reared its ugly head against Native Hawaiians.
Fascinating account of a sad miscarriage of justice. Good insight into the state of the law, politics and prejudice in 1930's Hawaii. Thoroughly researched and well-written.
Great glimpse into the idyllic paradise that was Hawaii between the wars. The description of the class distinction between the wealthy upper crust and the "commoners" as well as the racism that was taken for granted is interesting. Highly recommended for history and true crime buffs.
Really unique crime story. Clarence Darrow took their case. As a lawyer, I was surprised, but Mr. Darrow said he needed the money!
