Beyond Outrage: Expanded Edition: What has gone wrong with our economy and our democracy, and how to fix it, by Robert B. Reich

From Booklist

The problem with our economy is that it currently works for the few—corporate and Wall Street elites—at the expense of the rest of us, former labor secretary Reich argues. Elites not only receive higher compensation but enjoy greater job security. “Regressives”—politicians who have been co-opted by big money—have turned the question of American morality upside down. These regressive forces push a divide-and-conquer strategy, primarily by raising alarms over deficit spending and asserting a need to cut public programs that benefit the middle class and the poor. Reich notes the blame heaped on public employees for state budget crises in comparison to that accorded either Wall Street practices that led to the recession or the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision that removed limitations on corporate contributions to political campaigns. Reich recommends that politicians and the public get out of their ideological bubbles and face the need to raise tax rates on the wealthy, reduce military spending, and restrict the size of banks to reduce the risk to taxpayers in case of failure. --Vernon Ford

I looked for a book by Reich after watching his Inequality For All documentary, hoping for a bit more detail. This book really is that documentary in book form. It discusses the large recent swings in the economy, discusses what Reich claims are the causes, and then covers the effects and some possible solutions.Good -Easy to read with analogies and layman's termsEntertaining writingCovers the main problem and proposes a solutionBad -Oversimplifies a complex issueProvides little real evidenceThis is the economist's version of propaganda, like Thomas Paine's common sense. It uses simplifications and layman's terms to describe why the rich are getting richer at the common man's expense, and then hands the common man a pitchfork. While I mostly agreed with this book, I wished for more evidence that his basic premises were true. I wanted to see the real numbers that showed not only the effects of inequality - but the numbers that justified Reich's diagnosis of the problem. If you are ready for economic jargon and dry reading you can find that sort of thing in other books, such as Capital in the Twenty-First Century by Thomas Piketty.Reich's Beyond Outrage is fun to read and points a finger at a real problem, but if you aren't ready to grab your pitchfork without evidence - look elsewhere.

Amazing insight as to why our country is in such dire straits. At first I was surprised that Dr. Reich was a Bernie Sanders supporter, but after reading his book, I understand why the Democratic Party needs a progressive like Reich and Sanders to promote changes in our economy, our Congress, and our taxation. This is poignant, thoughtful study of the problems our country is dealing with before this important November election.

Since the beginning of civilization, we have ruled by wealthy elite who confiscated much of the fruits of the masses of poor and working class. Perhaps for a brief period of time in America this wasn’t so with property rights and economic freedom providing a comfortable living for millions, but Robert Reich eloquently describes how that has been considerably eroded, and, if we don’t fight it, it will continue to be eroded by our nation’s elites. Reich lays this out in the first part of the book, and this section is outstanding and well documented. In the end of the book, Reich addresses what can be done about it. He lays out some policy ideas such as raise taxes on the wealthy, cut the military budget, Medicare for all, get money out of politics and many others. Then he puts forward some strategies as to how we can bring about these changes such as talking to your neighbor. This is where the book really tanks. Some of Reich’s policy proposals are good ideas and have been talked about by many others. However, it ain’t gonna happen. That’s right. The economic environment in this nation (truth be told, this planet) that skews the rewards toward the elite may change somewhat, but we have to come to grips with the fact that things will always be skewered in favor of the elites. And given that, Reich fails to provide any ideas as to how we should address that given fact.So I’m here to add my two cents. First, get educated, not by studying 18th century French poetry, but by developing marketable job skills. Mechanic, plumber, accountant, truck driver, doctor etc. It’s a plus to acquire skills and knowledge to run your own business. Second, become fiscally responsible. You don’t have to become a financial genius. You just have to live within your means, save for retirement/home/emergencies, and invest wisely, and don’t run up the balances on your credit cards. Take care of yourself. The government won’t, and Robert Reich won’t either. Third, and this part is not optional, share. There are people all over the world who are a lot worse off than us. Let your purpose be to make the world a better place for them. As the wise Paul Blart said, “If you believe that the purpose of life is to only serve yourself, then you have no purpose.”

After reading this book I feel like Rip Van Winkle - waking up after a twenty year sleep - and finding out to my surprise how drastically things have changed. Hard to believe I did not see this situation developing. This author's book should be on the must read list of every American. The statistics on things like how much of the economy is controlled by the top 1/2 of 1 percent are so alarming and so unbelievable - I will need to verify before accepting it as truth. My big fear is that I will find it to be absolutely true. I hope we can effect change quickly enough through our political institutions and NOT get into a situation where there is a revolution.

A well articulated diagnosis and prescription for America's fundamental problems. Reich has an impressive grasp on the facts and communicates clearly. An interesting point he brings up is the historical perspective-the fact that the economic reforms progressives are calling for would essentially bring us back to where we were during the greatest period of economic growth in US history . Reich passionately urges us to consider the lessons of history so that we don't stumble into another Gilded Age. Recommended read for anyone who has in interest in economics and politics and how they relate.

This a must read for all citizens of the United States. I recently became aware of the truth of what is going on in this country and it is eye opening. I appreciate the author writing these books to share the truth about our country's politics.

Excellent book. Robert B. Reich is a very good writer who makes things very easy to understand. The only downside is the thought that someone so well educated and so easy to understand isn't being listened to. What hope do we have if people and politicians don't understand or care to hear what Robert B. Reich has to say? What he has to say seems perfectly reasonable.
