Let me begin by saying that I have zero coding experience with xcode. I had been making many a false start with the very basics of even knowing where to begin let alone how I would ever remember anything I would learn from what I could find on YouTube or random websites .I often have a hard time motivating myself to start learning and find myself easily discouraged when I get myself in a bind with nowhere to turn. Then one day I decided to search amazon.com on my Ipad mini for all of the eBooks related to xcode for a beginner like me. I came across many but when I would read the sample pages, I would be lost within the first few pages. Then I found "Beginning Xcode" by Matthew Knott. I read all of the sample pages in one sitting and as soon as payday arrived, I immediately ordered the book and had it shipped asap. For me personally, I do much better with a hard copy then an eBook as I tend to make a lot of notes. Once it arrived, I started devouring it, page by page until I realized I had just spent a few hours in one sitting. I couldn't get enough. The book is written in a way that's easy to understand no matter how little programming experience you have. Its also great for experienced developers as it doesn't talk down to you or make you feel as if you reading below your level of understanding. I am a little more than halfway through it and I worry that I wont find another book as well written as this to continue on my learning path. This should be mandatory reading for anyone who has the desire to learn xcode but doesn't know how or where to begin. I would give it 10 stars if I could!!BTW..I have recently spent the money to become an IOS apple developer. Not that I expect to have an app in the app store anytime soon, but just as a way to get my hands on extra learning material and pre release betas. I would have never had the confidence had it not been for this book.

good book if writing code for mac's or iphones

So far this book has been great. I see a lot of the reviews complain about typos, and code not working properly. This is not entirely the fault of the author. Apple keeps changing some of the requirements of swift, even minor updates to Xcode result in changes, where code needs to be changed. However Xcode is very good about telling you what to change. Any place you do see an error, just double click on it, and take the suggestion on how to fix it. This is not the author's fault, since Xcode is always changing, since swift is such a new language. One typo however, in one of the chapters when making the location app, you are asked to put a field in the info.plist. DO NOT end the field name with a ;, otherwise you just won't get your geo location reported. Its a shame, that neither Xcode or the simulator tells you why your not getting the location, it just doesn't work. One nice thing about this book is that it doesn't keep going over the same thing, over and over. Other books get so boring because you keep doing the same thing. Every chapter you learn something new, and the author is very good about explaining why you do what you are doing. I recommend this book, maybe not to someone who is an absolute beginner. But if you have a little experience doing programming, I suggest you check this out.

Excellente Book!!

I love those book! It has a lot of information, but I wish it would give the completed code so you can compare your own code. Right now I am working on chapter 7 and I am getting error messages I am not sure if I have something in the wrong or it the code it place out of order or what. So it would be nice to have the complete code for all the chapters and not just a few!

I have never actually given a review to something that I have bought except for this. I don't know if the book was printed before a newer version of Xcode 6 came out but I have tried to build the first two projects and some of the code he asks you to use do not exist. Please take this with a grain of salt as I am an absolute beginner but I have followed all directions and the first two projects in chapter three and chapter four, and both of them have some sort of error. The writing is well done but you go through about 30 minutes of getting the thing set up and have to abort because the code that he uses is not in Xcode 6. This is especially painful because I am a beginner and I do not know where to go or what other code to put in to fix this. was really excited about this book, now I just wish I didn't buy it. I am about 100 pages in and now I am putting the book aside to find another resource that will teach me how this thing works.

Good. Jumps around a bit. Worth the price to have it in your arsenal.

It must have been written for an older version of Xcode. Show Object Library command did not do what was expected, and so on...
