This book Is much older & has been very well taken care of. This is the Story of Pretzel Written By Margret Rey. This book is missing the outer coverlet that goes over the hard cover. On the inside someone had wrote a first name. Other than those 2 minor things this book is perfect. I am truly amazed at the condition. This book was requested by my son and I purchased it & the stuffed animal Pretzel for him as well. This is a very cute little story of a dachshund in love with another dachshund from across the street. The illustrations in this book are illustrated by H. A. Rey & are all perfect. I love books. When I can find gently used books in great condition I buy them as they have alot of life and enjoyment left in them. This lesser known book by the author of Curious George was a childhood favorite! I was so happy to find it on Amazon and gift it to my niece who loves stories and dogs! The illustrations are fantastic. The heartwarming tale about Pretzel the dog reminds readers the importance of being kind and that it is great to be different!
This book was a favorite of mine when I was little and I am glad that I get to share it with my little one.Pretzel is a dachshund who takes pride that he is different from everyone else. He has won blue ribbons for being the best dog, but he can not win over his love Greta. She doesn't like long dogs. He tries to win over her affections but still she refuses him. It's not until she falls into a deep hole and Pretzel rescues her that she decides to marry him. This is a charming story that has many good points to it, you should accept that you can be different from everyone else. Pretzel didn't look at his situation and pout but took it in stride and won blue ribbons. He also didn't hold a grudge against Greta and still helped her out when she was in trouble. There are many ways you can look at this story and see teachable moments for your little one.
I mean, I read this book to my 9 month old so it doesn't really matter if the plot sucks. But it does. I bought this book because I loved Curious George as a kind and I thought the idea of a weenie dog named Pretzel is super cute. The illustrations are cute and the paperback is pretty large and keeps my baby's attention. However, the story is a bit dated and kind of sad. Pretzel is a pathetic stalker and Greta is very clear that she is not interested in him because of his length. Poor Pretzel.
I ordered what I thought was a hard cover edition what arrived was a soft cover. The story itself is a great addition to my sons Curious George collection. However I knew a soft cover would never last. I went to return it and Amazon just refunded me and said I could keep it. I donated it to a local book drive and for now we are reading our hardcover library book until I get around to purchasing it in a Hardcover edition.
The story is cute, but I am going to return it because it doesn't display correctly on my kindle app or the cloud reader. I will buy the real book instead. Pages are repeated and misaligned so that the illustrations do not line up. Very irritating to try and read also... some text is printed separate and others are on the illustrated page.
I thought this would be a great book for my 4 year old niece who loves curious George and dachshunds but I was wrong. The story was odd boarding on inappropriate. I'm sure that is not what the author intended but it is unfortunately a possible interpretation. Wouldn't recommend.
This "love" story is better suited for 70 years ago when it was written. It does have teachable moments but if you are gifting as a cute dog book then do not buy.
