This is a useful book; it expands an earlier edition. The book uses the "linear programming format."A programmed instruction book, when opened should lie as flat as possible so that the reader can cover the given answer as she/he solves the indicated problem! This is not the case with this book; it is small and stiff and tends to close and not lie flat when opened. This is a nuisance that interferes with study!I have read and own many programmed instruction books that date back to the 1960s. The better ones had relatively large pages that were bound in signatures; some used spiral binding, etc. These types of bindings allowed the book to remain open so that the preceding text was easily referred to as one completed an exercise, etc.Having said that, this book is useful. However, a casual acquaintance with 3-D coordinates, atomic orbitals, and matrices would be helpful. The material covered is classic, useful, and worth mastering. It will ease the pain when studies of more detailed accounts of symmetry and group theory are encountered!

I bought this book with no prior knowledge of molecular symmetry nor the mathematics of group theory. With only the idea of stereochemistry and matrix algebra, I was hoping that this book would help pave the way for my inorganic chemistry course over the summer. The first few pages (about 6-10 pages in) started out quite nicely, you get a comfortable feel for the author and his teaching style- almost like a parent holding your hand and guiding you gently through the basic elements of symmetry. Aside from a few vaguely conveyed ideas (improper rotation was not very clear), you start to get a hang of the idea and feel comfortable with the author and his pedagogy. BUT..... once you reach the 2nd chapter about point groups, it's as though the author left you in the middle of a busy high-way, blindfolded, with little to no explanation why such a point group contains such elements, etc. and how, or even why he grouped it such a way! All the new concepts in chapter 2 were just thrown at you as though you are the master of molecular symmetry. This would be alright if the book haven't been a step-by-step guide to Molecular symmetry and Group Theory, so basically when I got stuck with Chapter 2, I had NO clue what chapter 3 was talking about and because I don't know chapter 3, I could forget about Chapter 4, and so on... Unfortunate! That's one word I want to convey about this book. It's unfortunate that the author just got tired of explaining better after chapter 1, and assumed that everyone is the master of molecular symmetry after an excellent introduction. It got my hopes up and let it down as soon as I got to chapter 2. If this is the "easiest" way to learn molecular symmetry, I don't know how people learn it in the past. I give this 1 star because that's how many chapters I got to understand in this book. Bottom line is, this book is like a movie with a great trailer- and after watching the movie for the first ten minutes, you realize it has nothing to do with what the trailer is about- that's how you'll feel when you get to chapter 2....trust me.

This book provides a good overview of group theory and a great introduction to the field. It is easy to read and contains numerous exercises to demonstrate the key points throughout. Consequently, this makes it a good text for a course that involves group theory. It also contains some useful hints not found in other texts. I surveyed several books on group theory, and this was the best one overall. The text by Cotton is more complete and exhaustive, but for basic knowledge I prefer this book because it is simply written.

As an average chemistry student at an American University. I have to say this has been one of my favorite supplemental text books ever for the subject of Inorganic Chemistry. It condenses the information down into smaller sections with easy to understand sections broken up by practice problems.I would not say this is the only necessary text for the subject but to sit along side your main Inorganic text book I would say this is a very useful book to have to read. The exercises are easy to understand and do. When you get stuck the book is short enough to re-read sections and clear up any confusion. However for a more in depth understanding I would look elsewhere.

The book starts easy but makes huge jumps in each subsequent chapter. In the end, you'll be left with enormous gaps of knowledge which the authors pretends to have addressed in his previous chapters. I spent minutes rereading a page in search of some information that I thought I had missed, only to find out there was nothing there. I recommend Robert Carter's book rather than this too-short-to-be-useful book. The low price isn't really worth it.

So far this is the best introductory book that is available in the topic. The style of presentation is lucid such that a student with minimum knowledge in geometry can master group theory in 2 weeks. Traditionally Group theory in Chemistry is considered as very abstract and therefore complex subject. But after reading from first page to the last, I felt that this opinion is wrong and Group theory can be presented in easy way as Vincent did. I strongly recommend this book for undergraduate and graduate courses!!

Our professor had us but this and a few other books to cover all the topics we needed to for Advanced Inorganic Chemistry. This book is great. It walks you through the coordination really nicely and is very interactive with it's little mid-reading quizzes. Probably one of the most spot on valuable books I've owned.

Thank you! Good condition. Fast shipping. No marks on it.

Ugh! All the joy and engagement of reading a dictionary to learn how to write poetry. Bought this for a PM elective in an MBA program and I'm now about half way through. I'm an experienced PM in industry and Government. I'm glad I didn't start with a text like this when considering PM duty. Else, I would have surrendered all enthusiasm (or hanged myself) and headed for job in the shipping department . This is an encyclopedic, monotonous, enumerative narrative with no literary cueues on the importance or significance of topics therein. It all just IS (or WAS). Once in a while there is an assertion from the old caste structure of business sounding like 19th century factory lore. Charts and graphics are so subjective and nondescript I can't fathom what they are intended to add - other than to increase page count. Many are very confusing for their minimalist labeling and severe lack of source data. Perhaps Kerzner was the best PM in recent history. No doubt he was the first to stretch the definition across so many pages to garner title of Bible of project management. But I am rather surprised even in the 11th edition it still feels like a 19th century tome, with so many plodding passive assertions leading inductively to every minute definition you'd swear it was written by Hume or Mill or Shopenhauer. I'm just very disappointed that after reading so many insightful and engaging texts on all the aspects of contemporary project management, I now find myself here in a graduate class with a reference text that doesn't really offer any conviction for what is good or bad, right or wrong, optimal or suboptimal for business today and tomorrow. Rather it examines archaeologically the pot shards and bone fragments in the strata below the current enterprise to estimate at how we arrived in present day.

This is a book packed with project management information, with ties to the PMI certification exam in every chapter (which may be useful to folks using this to help study for their PMP). In my opinion, this book could use some revision to better organize and present the information it contains. There are long "laundry lists" of things to take into account, some of which might be more digestible if they were hierarchically organized. The author appears to have a lot of experience, and appears to have tried to capture the full range of his experience in this book. One drawback of this approach is that it reads to me more like a "brain dump" than a structured, systematic approach to understanding the topic.

Very thorough book on project management. But poorly referenced and it's very difficult to find anything. I reference the book in my classes on project management and know a lot of project managers who own it. But I never talked to a project manager who actually read the entire book. It's a much better reference than a textbook.

This is a great outline for project management and the case studies are subjects everyone can relate to. The mathematical side of this book is a bit unclear- but what mathematical book is clear? Overall, It was a great resource I'll be keeping for the future.

Terrible for use in the classroom. The problems and case studies don't pull from information in the book. The information, especially in chapter 11, isn't laid out well and is confusing. Kerzner often interchanges terms like project and program management that shouldn't be interchanged. I would not recommend this edition for classroom use.

Next to the "Communications Bible" from Dow and Taylor, this is the other must-have book from my Master of Science in Project Management program. I wouldn't think of selling it now that I've graduated (and anyway, it's full of my highlights and notes!). Between these two books, I have the basics and then some. There is so much in this text we were able to use it in three classes. One of my classmates didn't like all the bulleted lists -- there's rarely a two-page span without one -- but I found them useful. Especially when studying, it's nice to have a succinct list.As heavy as this book is, it's a little daunting when you first pick it up. It looks a little forbidding when you crack it open. But I found the writing very personable, easy to understand, and full of "I never thought of that" moments. Good research book to keep on hand.

If this is a required text for your class then this is a moot review. If you have a choice in the matter, this is a text that has dated (most are older than 2000) small (2-4 pages)in medium text book format to medium(5-10 page) unanswered cases studies for use in an academic environment to discuss 1-2 points per case study. there are several indepth large case studies that hopefuly will cover the bulk of what your assignment requires. As the preface by the author states, many instructors require the content of papers used in the course to be more current limiting the usefulness of the text regardless of the relavance. Unfortunately two of my instructors in the MPMP program required with in 5 years releveance and as the case studies are dated in most instances I was half way through the book to find any that would meet the time requirement. In a first come first pick scholastic environment...ouch.The text does break down the case studies into a logicall grouping order by Project Management sub categories such as scheduling, risk ,resources etc. this has some use as a student looking for a case study by those categoriesIn the intent of the author the book does what it is designed to do but for someone who is an acknowleded expert in Project Management field and has numerous other books referenced heavily it would be wonderful if it were brought more up to date.

Good book and very informative for the subject matter. I wish the book included more context, better real world examples, and less a regurgitation of the PMBOK guide. I typically enjoy utilizing the kindle for learning but dislike how this kindle edition is set up. It is not set up the same with page numbers and such so it is hard to quote using the APA format and it is not easy to navigate for easy reference. These factors make it difficult to use the kindle version in a class setting.

Review

The Art of Gothic is one of the books of your dreams, especially if some of your favorite dreams are the most ornate of nightmares. --Wayne Alan Brenner, The Austin Chronicle'''The Art of Gothic' explores the various goth subcultures that have exploded around the globe, including the Harajuku dark Lolita and emo, cyber and metal goth as well as the ongoing aesthetic influence the scene continues to have in everything from fantasy literature to fine art.'' --SF Gate, December 13''The Art of Gothic excels at being both a fantastic introduction for the intrigued and artistic non-Goth, as well as a rewarding read for any veteran alternative types. It's an expertly woven tapestry of all the colourful and unique threads that make up the iconic history of this enduring subculture.'' --The Blogging Goth, December 15''Scharf speaks to the reader like a cool, very knowledgeable friend. As such the page or two of solid text (plus substantial image captions) devoted to each subculture will inspire further research. Cosy up with a copy this winter, indulge in its pictorial eye candy (the Melodrama chapter's shots are to die for) and surprise yourself with the rich, diverse colour of the goth world. Dark and also oddly delectable.'' --Classic Rock, December 19

The book was far to me.i listen to lot of goth music.some of the bands listed in the book were in wrong spots in the book.it even better if they did not put steampunk in this book!after all this it was a far book to have in your collection.

I love how the author explains about the music, aesthetics, history, etc. She kept the Goth Subculture subject very nice and consistent. :)

Prefect coffee table book for spooky people. Very heavy and with lovely pictures. A must have for any goth in their book shelf.

AWESOME.

:)

Wonderful book and lush, high quality photos. As someone who as been familiar with "the scene" for quite a few some time, the spectrum of goth fashion and trends over the years is documented in detail. It seemed that just as I was saying "well, what about ____?" I would turn the page and there "it" was. As with any book covering a world-wide lifestyle, there is sure to be some gaps but all in all, a must have for those of the darker creative minds or those just curious about alternative lifestyles and art.

Quality and unique insights and research on the goth aesthetic. The Art of Gothic paints a beautiful picture; piecing together the puzzle of a captivating aesthetic in a masterful way. Read my full review in the Dec/Jan 14/15 Issue of Auxiliary Magazine.

“A guidebook to present-day Italian scenes and an introduction to seven of the great Latin poets, whom we meet on their own grounds…the places and people we meet on this very special trip make this extremely attractive for all who love the beauties of nature and at the same time like to remind themselves of the great works of men and the glories of past civilizations.” –Paul Jordan Smith, Los Angeles Times“A walk back in time to a Roman Italy of 2,000 and the lives of seven Latin poets.” –Jacob Deschin, The New York Times“...this book has established itself as a minor classic, or quite simply as a classic…The writing is sensitive and notably intelligent, backed up by Highet’s competent verse renderings from the Latin, and to cap it all he gives a pen-picture of Rome itself at its imperial apex. Here is scholarship in the old sense, humane, unpedantic, open-minded and totally free of academic jargon.” –Brian Fallon, The Irish TimesA “delightful, infectious book…Highet writes racily about the Latin poets he admires, putting each in situ with the airy dash now frowned upon in today’s dourer academy. He knows much. And enthuses even more. This is a labor of love that is never labored. Highet’s attention to prosodic details gets us within earshot of his authors.” –The Herald (Glasgow)“Highet has written what is surely one of the most unusual travel books ever published. It is in one sense an account of a journey to Italy, complete with pictures taken by the author’s ‘faithful Rolleiflex.’ In another sense it is the journal of a trip into the Italy of the past…translated by the author with loving care and capturing as faithfully as possible the meter and structure of the oritinal work.” –Robert Kirsch, Los Angeles Times“This attractive and pleasantly educational work...includes some lucid and enlightening critical interpretation…In tracing the birthplaces and homes of his seven poets Mr. Highet has written sketches of many places in Italy outside the orbit of most tourists…Poets in a Landscape is a strikingly handsome example of bookmaking.” –Orville Prescott, The New York Times “With great love and scholarship…he brings his poets and their troubles fully alive.” –Stevie Smith“Highet is that rarest of finds, the scholarly homme complet, full-blodded, cultured, completely human in his learning.” –The Times Literary Supplement (London)“Unlike many scholars he succeeds in getting into the skin of his poets, finding the man in the style…there he can detect a writer’s true self.” –Cyril Connolly

The word ‘landscape’ in the title attracted me to this book, as well as some regret that in high school and college, I had passed up the opportunity to study Latin and the Classics. People today, whether in the American West or not, are concerned about the environmental survival of the land, but also how individuals perceive the landscape with themselves in it. In college one can’t study the Romantic era of poetry without hearing about Virgil, Horace, and Ovid, and particularly Juvenal--whose work has entered the modern consciousness. But, the delightful surprise for me was the chapter on Propertius and particularly the section “The springs of Clitumnus” near Assisi, Italy. The author, Gilbert Highet, creates a sense of wonder as he quotes from Propertius, then Highet makes a claim statement, “All water in motion is wonderful,” then with sensory delights takes us directly to the springs where “Cool, copious fresh water” rises “out of dry earth under a hot sun.” Then Highet puts us in the scene: “Gazing into the larger pools, we see wells. The bottom sinks away, here and there, into a conical recess about five feet broad . . . filled with equally clear, though darker, water” (101). In other words, not only does the reader gaze into the landscape, it gazes into him. Not only are you in the landscape, it is in you. That is the writer’s art. While reading the chapter on Catullus, I was immediately struck by the poet’s obsession with sexuality and the game of cat and mouse--shall we say. I was reminded once again that well-to-do women and men were limited by ancient Rome’s class and caste system. There were no business professions, no middle-class mobility for men or women, no honorable work ethic (not to mention slavery was legal). Thus, the poetry on chasing after sex seems, at times, not to have a place in our contemporary society. As a result, the most interesting poets are the two or three with low-class or slave origins. The most enduring writer might be Juvenal who contrasted city life--the debauched hypocritical Rome--with honest, quiet country life. This conflict between town and country still endures and is largely valid, and yet poets, like other people, often find country life tedious. The most haunting chapter of the book is the final one titled “Rome,” in which Highet meditates on the city ruins and the permanent changes in the landscape. Not only do walls of cities crumble, but beloved places shift and are forgotten. Writers and poets--in an imperfect world of slavery and injustice--try to immortalize the quiet places. The “Rome” chapter is not about the political fall of empire; it’s about the slow natural processes--plants, shifting ground, earthquakes—that overtake buildings and monuments. There is much here for the contemporary reader to mediate upon. What worries me, now, is how quickly a bulldozer and real estate development can destroy beloved countryside; and how thoroughly tourist advertising can commercialize and cheapen a place. Not so with Rome.

Read the portion on Ovid for a study group I belong to that is reading Ovid's Metamorphoses. The amount of information was amazing and written in an easy to read and enjoyable way.

All of these reviews point up important charms of Highet's undertaking, but I would note that they are more than the sum of their parts. Taken together, this excursion into social and cultural history, ancient and modern geography, sociology, linguistics, poetics, architecture and psychology is what intellection is all about. It is a "wow" and an accessible one for non-specialists. I am a professor of ancient history and will promote this to my students, not to increase their knowledge of history, but to increase their pleasure in history and introduce them to why some of us love and value it for PRESENT understandings and insights.

One of the pleasures of studying Latin is the beautiful, literate prose used by the authors of things Roman. Gilbert Highet is a pleasure to read whatever his subject. Reading a book like this makes me sigh for a (probably fictitious) past when education meant polish and and a light touch as well as knowledge.

The opening to chapter 1 on Catullus is one of the best prose paragraphs in literature - fiction or nonfiction. "The woman was unworthy. The poet died. The word lives." Wow.

Reviewer # 3 mentions the lack of photographs in some editions.I own the Akadine Press, 1996 edition (see # 2 under "all editions") and can verify that this edition does include the black and white photos of landscapes, buildings, etc. -48 photos total.

The New York Review has just re-issued Gilbert Highet's charming 1951 book, POETS IN A LANDSCAPE. Highet was a professor of classics at Columbia, and loved the Roman poets (Horace, Virgil). He also deeply loved Italy. In this book, he visits the home of each of the poets, and writes about it and their poetry. It is a terrific book: erudite and thoughtful, and is guaranteed to make you want to go to Italy. It is also -- by a huge margin -- the best book about poetry I have ever read.

Highet is wonderful. Clear, accessible writing that makes the Classical world come to life. Reading this book made me want to dive into the Odes and other works he describes. Phooey on Postmodernism.

Review

"Dahlen's new book makes the case for capitalism so well that it deserves a prominent place in the personal library of anyone committed to defending free markets or advancing their knowledge of sound economics. . . . If you want to advocate and defend capitalism on moral and practical grounds, buy this book, read it, and keep it as a handy reference. As for me, the next time a friend asks for good 'starter' books on economics, I'll still recommend Hazlitt and Rand, but I'll also add a third reference: Ending Big Government by Michael Dahlen."Â -Jim Brown, The Objective Standard

As the subtitle states this IS the essential case for capitalism and freedom, and Professor Dahlen is eminently capable of presenting it, both succinctly and eloquently, and provides a great primer for those as yet unconvinced of the virtues of free market, laissez-faire capitalism, or those who already support it and want more information to be able to defend it more effectively.Sadly the vast majority of Americans appear to fall into the first group and have no idea that this form of capitalism was fundamental to the founding and building of our nation before the 20th century. Perhaps it would be more appealing today if it was called "free-range capitalism."This may seem like yet another impractical libertarian (and heaven forbid even Randian influenced!) polemic to those who favor an idealistic centrally planned or a more cautious and compromising "mixed" economic/political philosophy, but it is clear after reading Dahlen that all non free market approaches (including the mixed version) fall into the camp of statism, and that, "Statism is the principle of government force and tyranny." (p.5.). And that it is precisely capitalism's moral foundation (respect for the principle of private property and individual sovereignty) which has been so misunderstood or taken for granted. In the same way that this was a major concern for the majority of Americans in the late 18th century, but it took the actions of a small minority to bring into reality (via the Revolution of 1776) it is once again a major issue in regard to survival of the American experiment, and now up to an educated minority to fight for these freedoms (fight as in diligently guarding our rights to peaceful freedom loving - "free-ranging" - lifestyles and not by armed insurrection). This message is perhaps more timely than ever and Dahlen's presentation is highly recommended. A real tour de force on the history, philosophy and economics of capitalism in clear and simple language, this would be the perfect textbook for modern high schools, but unfortunately it would also undermine so much of the rest of the social studies curriculum…

An industrious and detailed study of just what the title says. Dahlen meticulously references his case, starting from pretty much the earliest societies. The first chapter is a lengthy history and explanatory essay setting up Dahlen's theories and creating a commonality for the terms used. The second chapter is a discourse on Dahlen's personal explorations of why he thinks government should function a particular way. The rest of the book is an excellent conversation starter on how free markets should work and enterprise should and should not be regulated. With sections on the history of capitalism and statism, with statism being put into the same group with fascism and nazism, and other isms, to why the truth of "wealth"; not money, but what people can buy. Wealth, then, is the way toward an "ideal use" of money: the creation of goods that are "marketable, divisible, portable and homogeneous, durable, and hard to produce, or long term" which leads to savings. What I like about the book is that the author went the extra hundred miles to reference his theories, from Aristotle to Hamilton to contemporary financial, political, and economic thinkers. You don't have to agree to think about the topics, and engage in deliberate conversation.Readers who like politics, the economy, and hot topics that never go out of style, will be appreciate the effort Dahlen took to create this book that transcends the modern age.

I give a big thumbs up to Ending Big Government, a book that fully deserves a five star rating. Michael Dahlen has written a valuable addition to the literature of free market capitalism, a book that I will keep as a ready reference. Ending Big Government should get a prominent place in the “intellectual ammunition department” of anyone who wants to defend free markets.Dahlen’s book is addressed to those who are already sympathetic to capitalism and concerned about the growing intrusion of government in our lives. The author demonstrates that American capitalism has been undermined and distorted by increasing government controls, resulting in the foundering “mixed economy” of the present day. The only rational alternative to this hybrid monstrosity, he argues, is laissez faire capitalism, implemented at every level of the government and the economy. Dahlen makes his case by expanding on Ayn Rand’s claim that pure capitalism is not only the most productive social system, but also the only moral system. As the author himself states: “This book will show that capitalism is moral and practical while also showing that statism is immoral and impractical. Toward that end, this book systematically contrasts the history, economics, and the underlying philosophy of each system.“ Dahlen makes good on this promise, and the result is a book that is not only interesting and enjoyable, but also of lasting value, as I will describe below. Before I get into the highlights of the book, I have a minor quibble about the author's choice of a title. As Dahlen notes in Acknowledgements, the original working title was “Capitalism vs. Big Government,” which he rejected in favor of a “ better” (presumably more marketable) title. I agree that "Ending Big Government” has a nice ring to it, but it implies that the author is actually going to tell us how to get the government off our backs. However, despite the beguiling title, telling us “how” was never his purpose. So, for me at least, it was a minor letdown when I realized (about half way through the book) that the author was not going to provide a roadmap for ending excessive government intrusion. Dahlen fully understands that the culture has to be changed before pure capitalism can be more widely accepted, but we are left on our own to imagine exactly how this can happen in our lifetimes. (Is it just me, or does it feel as if time is running out, and it is becoming ever more urgent to reform our economy and our culture? Perhaps Dahlen will tackle this critical question in a future book.)Despite this minor distraction, you should definitely buy and read a Dahlen’s book. “Ending Big Government” has two outstanding virtues that make it well worth reading and keeping.First, “Ending Big Government” is well organized and clearly written. It requires no specialized or technical expertise, so its thesis and reasoning are fully accessible to any interested reader. The structure is logical and easy to understand, so you always know your place within the author’s framework. Dahlen systematically contrasts the virtues of capitalism with the evils of its antipode - statism - along three key dimensions: the history of capitalism versus statism in America; the philosophic underpinnings of both systems; and the economic theories and consequences of each. This is a lot of ground to cover in less than 300 pages, yet Dahlen gets it done it without neglecting any important ideas or events. His combination of clarity and conciseness is refreshing and unusual in a book of such broad scope. (My own proficiency is in economics, and in this area I I found Dahlen’s excellent analysis both terse and accurate.)Second, Dahlen has written a valuable reference work for anyone interested in the study of any special fact or feature of free market capitalism. The book is extensively and accurately footnoted, allowing the reader to launch a detailed inquiry into any related topic. For example, suppose you want to understand the significance of the Sherman Antitrust Act. Just look up “Sherman Antitrust Act” in the book’s online search engine, and you immediately get five useful references, including a full transcript of the Act itself, as well as sections in the text that concisely explain the context and importance of this famous legislation. Or, suppose you want to know the influence, if any, of the Scottish philosopher David Hume on the ideas underlying the founding of our Republic. Just query “Hume” and you'll get a succinct explanation of the role Hume played in promoting ideas that eventually began to undermine capitalism.“Ending Big Government” is such a fine reference that I bought both the paperback and the on-line version: the paperback for my desk, so I can make handwritten notes, and the on-line version (Kindle for Mac) so I can readily search topics on-line, as described above. In conclusion, "Bravo" to Michael Dahlen for writing what is certain to be a successful book, and thanks to him as well for providing a valuable addition to the modern canon of free market literature.

Definitely a must read!

Clearly, well researched and easy to read. A must read for anyone interested in the history of our nation and capitalism. In light of the current political situation, liberals might learn something tangible other than how they feel.
