My family has enjoyed Elephant and Piggie for several years. We own most of the books, and we pre-ordered My New Friend Is So Fun back in December. This installment of the series focuses on Gerald, and brings back the Snake character from Can I Play Too? When Gerald finds out that Piggie is playing with her new friend Brian Bat, he is very excited. But then slowly, Gerald begins to worry that Piggie and Brian might be having too much fun together. Gerald and Snake (who is Brian’s best friend) imagine themselves being replaced.I love Gerald-centric books because they really showcase the elephant at his neurotic best. Gerald manages to get himself into a frenzy, but it is all for naught: Piggie would never abandon her best friend. The ending is quite sweet, and solidifies the message that people can have multiple friends.I found this book to be especially relevant to our own lives because one of my girls has trouble with the concept that friends can play with other people. She and her best friend are reluctant to play with other children. This book presents friendship in a fun and engaging manner. The illustrations are charming. Mo Willems gives his characters a broad emotional range, and this adds to the humor value of the story. The illustrations appear on a plain white background, so the emphasis is on body language and facial expressions. I have two children on the autism spectrum, so having well defined body language and facial expressions helps us have conversations about how a character is thinking.Elephant and Piggie books are great for reading out loud with a beginning reader. There is no descriptive prose; the characters communicate via speech bubbles. The language is fairly simple, and words/phrases are often repeated.I would absolutely recommend My New Friend Is So Fun. We just got this book yesterday, and it has already been read multiple times. The book is 57 pages long, but there are only a couple of lines per page, so it is a quick read.
Mo Willems does it again! My kindergartners beg me to read the Elephant and Piggie books. In fact, when I read them out loud, they are as still as statues and you could seriously hear a pin drop (until they laugh so loud you think they will roll on the floor).I know they are going to love this book as much as I do. Sometimes my kinders get upset when their friend plays with someone else. This book will reassure them that their friend will still be their friend even if they play with someone else. Excellent job, Mr. Willems!
All the children that I read to love this series of books. My son loves all of Mo Willems' books in general. The stories in the Elephant and Piggie series are all dialogue, which is fun for a child that is just learning to read. Each of you can pick a character to read for, either Elephant or Piggie, and go back and forth reading the whole book together.I think this series is good for helping children develop emotional and social intelligence. Issues like fairness, friendship, sharing, differences and diversity, are all presented. The illustrations and quality of the hardcover are also awesome for this book.
Charming illustrations, very sweet stories, and very beginning-reader friendly. My kindergarten granddaughter loves being able to read these books on her own. She is acquiring a good sight vocabulary from continued exposure to high frequency words while the illustrations are very supportive of predicting text and story comprehension.
Piggie and Gerald stories are always a hit with my transitional kindergarten kids. As a teacher, I love them on so many levels it is hard to list them all. The characters stay true to themselves and the kids truly get to know them, so character study is easy. Also, the characters have lots of facial expressions and the stories are funny, but can be understood in several ways. This allows for my students to do some inferring, which they do on their own because they love the stories so much .
My 4 years old loves this book. She's a big fan of this series. Between borrowing them from the library and owing them, we've gone through the series so far. Highly recommended for early reader. Humorous read so I actually enjoy reading them with her for ~ an hour almost single every day! We read the series so frequently that my 18 months old will scream out "Piggie, Gerald" (names of the main characters) when she sees anything that resemble them. It's embarrassing at time. I actually brought a few for friends whose kids do not like to read and have received positive feedbacks so far...
My 5 year old loves the book. She started kinder this year, so the message of the book has been a real help in her understanding of friendships. She also loves searching for Pigeon whenever she gets a new Mo Willems book. The copy I received was in fantastic shape. Very considerate people.
My four year old really loves these books and they have a little bit of humor for adults as well. They teach some great lessons and I love hearing my kid giggle at these.
