This is an apologetic book of sorts. The first half examines and critiques various 'small' views of God. The second presents Him as He presents Himself in the Bible and in the Person of Jesus Christ. I thoroughly enjoyed this book for several reasons. First, it reminded me of how so many people tend to think of God and why they tend to think this way or that about Him. In general, Philips argues that we think small. We make God out to be a dictator or an absentee or cruel or simply remade in our own image and subsequently flawed in one way or another. But that's on us, not on Him. We project those fallacies onto Him, even though time and again He shows us that's not His character. Second, it challenged me to think through how I talk about God with people and, for that matter, how I think of Him myself. Third, it built from the ground up a multi-faceted view of the nature of God, as represented in Jesus Christ, and what man should do in response.Practically speaking, it's not a terribly difficult read. I've read many apologetic-type books that were much less accessible to the occasional or layperson reader. Recommended.
Excellent - Excellent - Phillips in this book hits the core of all believers in their commitment to their faith. What kind of God do we really believe in? Is He the God - big enough to cover all aspects of life and all people or do we limit Him to a rocking chair - or the policeman -,etc. It should change your concept of God - I recommend this book for reading by all professing Christians.
JB Phillips was a close friend of JRR Tolkein (Lord of the Rings & the Hobbit) and CS Lewis (Chronicles of Narnia). This little book probably has had a deeper impact on my life than any other. He's not trendy and this was written many years ago, but he's wise. And it has really helped me go beyond just what I THOT I was taught and make it deeply make sense in my life. I owe this book much.
I was looking for this book for a very long time. I'd had a copy but somehow I misplaced or lost it. I remember struggling with various concepts of God and considering the understanding of God as shared with me by others. None seemed to be close enough to what I felt and all were far to limited in the context of my life in that moment. What needed at the time. This book was so on point. I'm glad I was able to find this old edition in very good shape, consdering the times & its age. Its quirky cover & Monopoly board animation just adds character to this simple message for complicated minds. If you have a puny God, stuck in a Sunday School box, or are facing down seemingly unsurmountable challenges, this book is for you!
Many of us live under a misconception, a misunderstanding of what living out our faith entails, what authentic Christianity really looks like. This book is an excellent, short compendium to correct our misconceptions and clarify the Truth we desperately need to grasp. Discouraged at times in your faith? Feel like maybe you're a failure as a believer? This book gives you hope and confidence we can be all we were intended to be and do!! A must read for every believer no matter where you may be on this journey.
Very few books can continue to challenge the reader like this small book does. I have read it over and over and it has helped me keep the reality of the Divine manifestation in my life real. It challenges the reader to dispose of false concepts and presuppositions about God and allow His word to speak for him. Too often try and put God in a box and make Him "Safe" Phillips challenges that concept of a "safe" God and challenges us to replaces misconceptions with the God revealed in the Bible

This book inspired me when I first read it back in 1965 and again in 2013. Phillips has a way of pulling it all together that intrigued me. I found myself nodding my head as I read through his "destructive" section and nodding even harder as I read through the "constructive."I was in the ministry for 33 years and constantly referred to Phillips' concept of Jesus as being the focused image of God. His analogy of the "vague oblong blur" was right on.An excellent work that should be read by every preacher.
