This is a small, slim volume you can easily finish in one sitting, even if you're a slow reader like me. The author makes a case for Shinto as a universal religion--not in the sense that it claims universal authority, but in the sense that nature is everywhere, and Shinto is about celebrating, revering, and being integrated within nature. Shinto is non-dogmatic and its practices can be meshed with other religions. Therefore, you can practice Shinto anywhere, and the "meditations" (which is really a misnomer--in the text they are called litanies) are non-specific so can be used by anyone of any faith. The litanies are inspired by various natural elements, grouped by season, such as fire, waterfalls, trees, stones, earth, etc. The book explains basic Shinto concepts that are important to the worldview, such as "celebration" and "observation." These aren't articles of faith but rather ways of relating to life and nature. There is also a section on how to perform misogi (a waterfall purification ritual), though I found it difficult to picture some of the actions in the instructions. One thing about the book was disappointing: the litanies are mostly identical. Each one has a few lines that are specific to the element under discussion, but most of it is repeated for each litany. For example, the litany on trees is 4 and a half pages long, of which only 12 lines or so are unique to trees. And that litany had more specific lines than most. The rest is sort of a call and response pattern prayer focused on purification. Shinto doesn't have a concept of sin, but it does have a belief in impurity or "pollution." Pollution isn't caused by immoral acts, usually, but by coming into contact with unclean situations or substances; however, it can have a negative effect on one's spiritual, mental, and physical health, so there are many purification ceremonies to remedy it. (This isn't explained in depth in the book, I just mention it here for context.) If a reader didn't know this, they might find the emphasis on "purity" and "impurity" to be a little off-putting. For my part, I was expecting the meditations to have more emphasis on nature itself as opposed to the purification of humans. But the author does do a good job of showing how those things are related in Shinto. Each litany is prefaced by a short section on why that particular element is revered, referencing other cultures/religions that have had similar attitudes, e.g., Druids. These introductions are much shorter than the litanies themselves, and I would have liked them to be longer and more detailed, with more in-depth discussion of their role in Shinto. It's not to say that you can't find inspiration for meditation in this book (especially the "discursive" style of meditation where you focus on a word, phrase, or concept and allow insights to arise)--you can easily use the lines that are specific to each natural element and make them the focus of meditation. You likely wouldn't use the rest of the litany in that case. If you are interested in practicing Shinto outside of Japan, or building your own system of "revering the earth", or integrating nature meditation into another faith, you may find this book useful and inspiring. I think this would be especially true if you are inspired by nature but not too familiar with Shinto and thinking of dipping a toe in the water to see if it's a good fit for you. For a potential purchaser I think the question is just whether you want to spend $12.95 (the price at the time I bought it) for a book you will read in one sitting. I feel like the book should have either been much shorter, omitting the repetition and costing much less; or much longer and more detailed. But your mileage may vary.

This was not totally what I was expecting, but that is not a bad thing. I guess I was thinking more of a book of ponderables as opposed to a devotional. That being said, this is the first Shinto related book I have read. Maybe not the best to start with if you are just beginning your journey into Shintoism. Not to say it is a bad book; perhaps as I delve more into Shintoism, I will appreciate it better (I have two or three other books on Shinto to read). But it is a good way to see how a Shinto prayer service (for lack of better terminology) would go.It does explain how one can do these devotionals alone and how the whole waterfall ceremony works, which was very interesting. I would have to say if you are familiar with Shinto, but unfamiliar with the devotional process, pick this up, it will help. If not, shelve this book until you get more familiar.

If you open your mind and accept the good in every religion this is for you

Good buy at a good price and super fast shipping.

Review

“A standout…brimming with smart observations and fresh insights into Ford’s success.” –Alex Taylor, Fortune   “Fly-on-the-wall accounts of Mulally negotiating deals and Ford overcoming challenges from the inside and outside…A paean to the ingenuity, grit and optimism that once defined American industry and to capitalism played with government on the sidelines.” –Reuters   “A compelling narrative that reads more like a thriller than a business book.” –New York Times   “A must-read.” –Huffington Post   “A fascinating read for anyone who follows the car industry.” –Financial Times“A Detroit News journalist’s in-the-room account of the resurrection of America’s most storied car company…With colorful anecdotes, sharp character sketches, telling details and a firm understanding of the industry, Hoffman fleshes out every aspect of this tale, reminding us of the hard work, tension, and high-stakes drama that preceded the successful result.” —Kirkus“Bryce Hoffman has done a stellar job of capturing the Ford story—and more to the point showing us how Mulally did it.  American Icon is a story of leadership that offers valuable lessons for organizations of all sizes.” —Lee Iacocca“Bryce G. Hoffman’s American Icon brilliantly recounts the Lazarus-like resurgence of the Ford Motor Company under the bold and inspiring leadership of CEO Alan Mulally. Hoffman, one of America’s best auto industry reporters, has written a timely book about the relevance of Ford that serves as a larger metaphor for America at large. Highly recommend!” —Douglas Brinkley, professor of history, Rice University, and author of Wheels for the World: Henry Ford, His Company, and a Century of Progress “Bryce Hoffman has written a riveting tome based on deep insider information about the resurrection of the Ford Motor Company from a near death experience and the establishment of a business model that promises to be a prototype for large organizations of all types. It features the transformation from a top-down style of leadership to that of a coach led by CEO Alan Mulally whose focus is the team, the team, the team.” —David E. Cole, chairman emeritus, Center for Automotive Research “From the precipitous demise of an American icon through decades of infighting and self-destructive management to a turnaround not only financial but also in terms of forging the foundation of a new, healthy culture, this book reads like an un-put-downable novel. Bryce Hoffman’s amazing inside access tells the story of how Alan Mullally built on Henry Ford’s own management principles—which quickly got lost in the company—and created one company, with one purpose and a passion for product and customers. A great story.” —Jeffrey Liker, professor, University of Michigan, and author of The Toyota Way“Amazing. I would give Alan Mulally twelve D’s for his work at Ford, for Discipline, Data, Daring, Determination, Design, Direction, Decisiveness, Delivery, Doubt-Free, Debt Free, Downsizing, and of course, Dearborn.  I thought I was disciplined until I read how Mulally worked. Bryce is a gifted writer, and American Icon is both educational and entertaining.  Most telling of all—I learned from reading this book.” —Lee Cockerell, former Executive Vice President, Walt Disney World Resort, and author of Creating Magic “After decades of stories about the failure of America’s traditional industries to meet world competition, it is heartening to encounter a signal success. But Bryce Hoffman’s rendering of how Alan Mulally reversed the fortunes of Ford Motor is more than heartening; it is riveting. Almost certainly one of the best business books of the year.” —H. W. Brands, professor of history at the University of Texas at Austin, and author of Traitor to His Class and The First American“This superbly reported book is not just about cars. It is an authoritative and inspiring account of leadership, management, corporate culture, and the prospects for American manufacturing.” —John Taylor, author of Storming the Magic Kingdom

In 2006, Ford brought in Alan Mulally to help rescue Ford Motor Company from itself. Mulally’s first task was to change Ford’s management style from “every man for himself” to “every man for Ford”. Ford management’s transition from hiding problems (so you didn’t get fired) to acknowledging problems (so you could fix them) could only happen as the braver managers took the leap of faith that Mulally wouldn’t fire them for admitting the serious problems that existed within their own areas of responsibility. Reading about that process was interesting on its own; but, as I was reading, I was also thinking “these guys don’t yet know that the Great Recession is coming”. That event took the drama of Ford’s attempts to survive its past missteps to a whole new level. Wonderful, interesting and exciting book about Alan Mulally, Ford Motor Company, the auto industry and corporate America.

Growing up in the Detroit area I've seen Ford both at their best and their worst. Their incredible transformation over the last decade was nothing short of incredible. This reads more like an intrigue novel than a history lesson and really holds your attention. This, combined with Once Upon a Car and Taken for a Drive are some of the best auto industry books I've ever read.

I have to confess that this book was a complete stunner. I purchased it hoping to get a decent idea of what Ford went through during the economic crisis of 2006-2009, but this book proved to be a detailed, engrossing story that I could barely put down. Anyone who follows the news is well aware of the debacle that was the US auto industry in 2007, but Hoffman provides such depth in describing the issues facing the industry and the corporate in-fighting that it almost reads like fiction. You are instantly endeared to Bill Ford as a man that can put aside his own ego for the good of the company he loves, and you root for Alan Mullaly throughout the book even though we already know Ford made it through to the other side. His belief in his system and his ability to completely change the corporate culture of a multi-national company are truly inspiring.Outside the story itself, there are all sorts of interesting factoids to be found such as how the common stock was set up to ensure the Ford family maintained voting rights, and how neither Chrysler or General Motors would've survived if President Obama had stuck to President Bush's original requirements. The book delivers on so many different levels. I highly recommend to anyone with an interest in business or just an interest in a great story.

Author Bryce Hoffman details the incredible American comeback story of Ford Motor Company. His focus is largely on Alan Mulally, whom Ford hired away from Boeing in September 2006 to take over as their New CEO. Hoffman chronicles the events leading to Bill Ford's decision to step down as CEO and go outside the company and the auto industry to hire Mulally. The author describes the changes Mulally made to Ford's corporate culture as well as the approach he took to changing the mentality and necessity to work together for the survival and future of the company. Hoffman narrates the risks the company had to take to be able to keep it running. I especially relished the narrative of the three auto industry CROw's appearance before the Congressional and Senate hearings on the fall of 2008, when General Motors and Chrysler were asking for a federal bailout to keep those two automakers alive.Hoffman takes the reader into 2011 at a time when Ford was back in the black and on much stronger ground. He gives Mulally much of the credit for this amazing turnaround, but also praised Bill Ford and the other heirs of Henry Ford. Hoffman gives credit to many others within Ford for their courage and contributions to the comeback. This was the most interesting and enlightening books I've read about the American auto industry.

I'm enjoying reading about Alan Mulally.CEOs, CFO's, COOs, mid-level managers and especially consultants--there's something for everyone in this book. Some of my favorite points:1. Bill Ford was humble and willing to step away and letting someone else take over. He was great in keeping the family unified during thick and thin.2. What can we say about Mulally that hasn't been written elsewhere? I loved reading about the BPR process and his One-Ford strategy. He didn't just clean house either. He made a change here and there. A couple leaders left on their own. A couple were elevated. There's much we can learn about Mulally's leadership style.3. The bailouts - I found myself getting frustrated as I re-lived the bailouts of GM and Chrysler. Ford was at a complete disadvantage once the government took control of GM. Yet, Ford stuck to their plan.4. And speaking of that recession, it's as though Mulally had to navigate not one, but two turnarounds. That one and their serious issues when he first came on board in 2006.5. We know the rest of the story. Mark Fields is now the new CEO. Mulally embraced his abilities from day one. So this has a great ending. The fire didn't go out through a changing of the guard.I'm still amazed at how one person could change a leviathan in a stodgy industry. Sure, he built a team and had the full support of the Chairman. But this guy was/is unreal.I thought Gordon Bethune was legendary. I think Mulally's accomplishments are even more impressive since he turned around Boeing too.I also recommend the Audible version too as I listened to it while reading the Kindle version.

Oxford Roald Dahl Dictionary

From School Library Journal

Gr 2–5—Roald Dahl fans, writers, and lovers of language will delight in this unusual dictionary filled with whimsical wordplay and full-color illustrations by Blake. In each entry, a quote from one of Dahl's stories or poems uses the word in a sentence (for instance, for "scrumdiddlyumptious," from The BFG, "Fleshlumpeater says he is never eating queen and he thinks perhaps she has an especially scrumdiddlyumptious flavour"). Each spread contains several nonsense or invented terms or names of characters from the author's books; these are highlighted in blue to differentiate them from standard English words. In addition, there are "ringbelling rhymes" for would-be poets, "sparky synonyms," and lengthier sidebars called "Gobblefunking with Words," which may prompt lessons on subjects such as similes, metaphors, prefixes, suffixes, alliteration, spoonerisms, compound words, and onomatopoeia. Teachers will find the detailed lists of synonyms for commonly used words ("big," "small," "bad," "good," "move," and "say") particularly useful for aspiring writers. Occasional "Did You Know?" headings and footnotes discuss word origins and interesting facts ("A malapropism is when you use a word by miss cake"). Teachers and librarians might want to feature a Dahl "word of the day" during this centennial year—or any year. VERDICT A delightful, inspiring, and unique reference for most collections.—Barbara Auerbach, New York City Public Schools

"It's hard to find the right word to express our levels of excitement around the Oxford Roald Dahl Dictionary. Squacking? Jumpsquiffling? Gigantuous? Roald Dahl's inventive, playful use of language is such a key element of his writing, whether he was using existing words in his own mischievous way or inventing extra-usual new ones. It is wonderful to have this dictionary compiled with such expertise, passion and wit by Dr. Susan Rennie and the team at OUP. There could be no more fitting way to pay tribute to Roald Dahl in the year of celebrations for his centenary. Best of all, as a fully-functioning dictionary for readers and writers aged eight and above, I hope it serves as a swashboggling source of inspiration for a whole new generation of storytellers." -- Luke Kelly, Managing Director of the Roald Dahl Literary Estate and Roald Dahl's grandson"A great way for an established fan to spend time in the scrumdiddlyumptious space that is [Dahl's] world. Bonus points if you like to gobblefunk." --The Horn Book"For children who devour the stories of Roald Dahl, and for parents who dearly wish to encourage their children's interest in words and reading, comes a spliffling, gloriumptious, whoopsey-splunkers compilation of the vocabulary (both real and confected) that the great Dahl used in 'The BFG,' 'Matilda' and other books. Sprinkled with Quentin Blake's witty, ebullient illustrations, 'The Oxford Roald Dahl Dictionary' is cleverly organized by Susan Rennie to work partly as a word guide and partly as a spur to gobblefunk with words (without erroneously biffsquiggling, of course) like the master himself." --The Wall Street Journal"The best dictionary for children this year." --New York Journal of Books"This delightful book compiled by Rennie goes beyond any typical dictionary for children... Educators who are using Dahl's fiction or poems in the classroom will find this an excellent supplementary text for inspiring children to play with words. Highly recommended." --CHOICE

Roald Dahl's highly original, inventive use of the English alphabet to create the *perfect* word for any situation was astounding -- and now, instead of just coming across each word on its own by reading all of his books (which I highly recommend doing in any case!), you can find his wonderfully entertaining words embedded and explained, with lovely examples from his texts, within a regular dictionary for children. It's easy to know which words are his -- they are in blue, while all others are in black type. Even the "ordinary" words provide excerpts from Dahl's texts as examples of word usage. Put this book on your child's bookshelf, and also dip into it together with your child at bedtime: it is not only a delight and very funny (and, btw, educational), but it can perhaps inspire creative wordsmithing of one's own.No review of Roald Dahl's books of any kind, including this one, can fail to include the utterly charming, beautiful, funny illustrations of the genius artist/illustrator Quentin Blake.Kudos to Dr. Susan Rennie, whose name is given as the compiler of this fantabulous volume!

If you love Roald Dahl, then you need to get this book. My husband is a huge fan of his and has every book and movie. I came across this by accident and my husband didn't even know about it. He was quite surprised on his birthday and sat down reading through all of Roald's unique words. There are true words from the dictionary as well but every word he uses in his books is in here too. It was a real treat!

Brought this to help my kids with researching words. I like that it has pictures and is colorful, they seem to enjoy that vs the old fashion dictionary!

We love Roald Dahl anything. This dictionary is fun,all of his words in one book along with alot more common words.Having a BFG Party this weekend and thought this would be great forthe coffee table piece.

Good book for younger students with bright illustrations. The book arrived even earlier than I expected it and it was in good condition.

Well done to the publishing group for putting this together. It's laugh-out-loud funny at times.

huge hit with the kids i teach! really helpful for getting into reference texts, as well as on grade level for readers just falling in love with roald dahl. beautiful illustrations, easy to figure out organization, really fun to get interested in

This is a great book and is easy for the kids to understand.

Great book.

very nice book. Super easy to read. I thought I was reading Dr. Seuss but more interesting. A must for any wanna-be nephrologist

Thick as the day is long but well written! No regrets at all - a premier resource for when time allows a chapter or two.You can purchase with confidence.

I had read chapters of this book in medical school and things that a lot of physicians seem to misunderstand, such as water balance, are made so clear and explained so well, I had to have a copy. Anyone who takes care of hospitalized patients can benefit from this book as we deal with electrolyte and acid-base disorders on a daily basis. The best book I have read on this topic.

extremely good book i would all nephrologiest and internest to read to understand fluid and electrolyte pathophysiology and management thanks

Great book

Nice book with a good description of acid base balance and electrolyte disturbances. Time spent reviewing concepts is well wort it.

This book was very difficult to read but brutally honest and heart wrenching that no one listened to him or his siblings. Thank heavens the law has changed and the child is taken into protection until the facts are investigated and it does not matter the status of any individual, such as his father the highly acclaimed dentist. We as a whole society need to ensure such behavior ceases and the guilty are punished! Thank you for your honesty over a very private and painful past.

I have read all of Paul Sanders books. Just finished this one. What a powerful story! I couldn’t put it down once I got started. This book explains one of the many aspects a person goes through in becoming a juror. You really begin to understand the importance of jury duty beyond just showing up with your summons. I look forward to much more from this author.

I only got as far as Chapter 4 and the author states his father wanted to take a road trip through Canada ending in Winnipeg, Ontario where the "world's largest rodeo" takes place. Egregious errors such as this really detract from the believability of the entire story.Winnipeg = capital of ManitobaWorld's largest rodeo = Calgary, AlbertaOntario = 0

Paul Sanders writes a deeply disturbing, honest book on an urgent topic of importance: domestic violence. Sanders is a brilliant writer. I plan to read all of his books. This book should be read by everyone. It raises vital questions about safety, the responsibilities of parents, neighbors, cities, and nations. Addressing domestic violence and protecting those who are vulnerable should be a top priority.

This book was not what I thought it was. I guess I didn't read the description well enough. First off, this doesn't really have much to do with being a juror. It is about this person's previous abuse affecting his decisions at trial. Interesting, but also heartbreaking.

I really enjoyed reading this book from a jurors perspective. It was really interesting. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know what it is like to be a juror and the behind the scenes look at Voir Dire.

This had me in tears. Abuse is abuse no matter what kind. In a childs eye its all the same. I grew up with abuse too. all kinds, verbal, physical, sexual.. i was there in this story. I knew the feelings, no one believing you or back in those days no one talked about it ever. If it was brought up it was swept under the rug. Im glad they understand child abuse now a days. This story was running thru my veins like i was there. Because i was just a different house and different parents.

This book had me from the beginning! Very well written, but heartbreaking! I couldn't stop reading it, even thru the tears. Definitely following this author!

Review

A New York Times Notable Book of 2018An NPR Best Book of 2018One of Smithsonian's Best History Books of 2018Finalist for the Gilder Lehrman Lincoln PrizeSemifinalist for the PEN/ John Kenneth Galbraith Award"Freeman's research, both archival and secondary, is stunning ... [her] prose is clear and accessible ... [a] superb volume, which should stand for years as one of the most important books on the antebellum era." ―Douglas R. Egerton, Civil War Book Review"Given the enormous literature on the Civil War era, it’s difficult for a historian to say something genuinely new, but Freeman has managed to do just that . . . Freeman is a meticulous researcher and a vivid writer, and The Field of Blood makes for entertaining reading." ―Eric Foner, The London Review of Books"An impressive feat of research . . . Freeman's story [. . .] has elements of both horror and slapstick . . . The Field of Blood [. . . ] feels current. The political discourse it documents, if not the level of political violence, is alarmingly familiar in our own time . . ." ―Andrew Delbanco, The Nation"Superb . . . Freeman has written a smartly argued, diligently researched, even groundbreaking book." ―Eric Herschtal, The New Republic"Absorbing, scrupulously researched . . . Freeman uncovers the brawls, stabbings, pummelings, and duel threats that occurred among United States congressmen during the three decades just before the Civil War.... Men and women crowded the Congressional galleries with the expectation of seeing entertaining outbreaks, much the way fans of professional wrestling or hockey do today . . . But Freeman never loses sight of the fact that fighting in Congress was far more than a sport." ―David S. Reynolds, The New York Times Book Review“A superb, serious, authoritative, lively, occasionally amusing work of scholarly bravura . . . Freeman’s research is prodigious, her scholarship unimpeachable. By shifting her gaze from the conventionally cited causes of the Civil War, she has deepened our understanding of its coming. ” ―James M. Banner, Jr., The Weekly Standard "Fascinating . . . [Field of Blood] demonstrates the historic truth of an observation by black activist H. Rap Brown in the 1960s: ‘Violence is a part of America’s culture; it is as American as cherrypie.’ . . . [Joanne B.] Freeman’s book goes far toward explaining why there was a Civil War." ―H.W. Brands, The Wall Street Journal"In her vivid and remarkable new book . . . Joanne B. Freeman puts dozens of forgotten episodes of political violence into stark context . . . Freeman's wry touch and appreciation for the absurdities of politics – and politicians – give the book a burst of energy and readability. Most vitally, the story she tells has heightened relevance in our own tumultuous era." ―Randy Dotinga, Christian Science Monitor“Compelling and enlightening . . . Freeman’s pathbreaking book should be read by anyone interested in Congress, the Civil War or American history in general.” ―Roger Bishop, BookPage“With narrative flair and scholarly gravitas, Joanne Freeman has given us a powerful and original account of a ferociously divided America. For readers who think things in the first decades of the 21st century have never been worse, Freeman’s portrait of a tempestuous and tumultuous U.S. Congress offers a sobering and illuminating corrective. She shows us that the battles of the Civil War began not at Fort Sumter but in the U.S. Capitol, providing a new and compelling angle of vision on the origins of what Lincoln called our ‘fiery trial.’” ―Jon Meacham, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning The American Lion“In 1861, Americans grimly set to slaughtering the better part of a million of their fellow citizens. It was the most extraordinary break in the nation’s history―and Joanne Freeman charts its approach in an extraordinary new way. With insightful analysis and vivid detail, she explores the human relationships among congressmen before the Civil War, and finds a culture of astonishing violence. In fistfights, duels, and mass brawls, her innovative account detects steps toward disunion―and changes how we think about political history.” ―T.J. Stiles, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Custer’s Trials“Joanne B. Freeman’s erudition―and humor―are their own accomplishment, but it’s remarkable a masterful work on the disruptive state of the Union arrives precisely at this time. There could be no better guide. I’m left wondering whether America is in a state of disrepair or still in the process of being born.” ―Adrian Nicole LeBlanc, author of Random Family “Those who deplore the hyperpartisanship and decline of civility in contemporary American politics as unprecedented need to know more history. As Joanne Freeman makes clear in this compelling account, party strife, personal honor, and above all the slavery controversy brought unparalleled mayhem to the floors of Congress in the generation before the Civil War. Southern bullying and growing Northern resistance in the House and Senate foreshadowed the battlefields of 1861-1865.” ―James McPherson, emeritus professor of history Princeton University and author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Battle Cry of Freedom“Joanne Freeman puts us on the tumultuous and touchy floor of Congress during its most contentious and momentous years. In a story researched and written with bold energy, she chronicles a young America brawling its way toward war. The personalities and conflicts of long-forgotten duels and fights leap to life, speaking to our own time with surprising relevance.” ―Edward L. Ayers, author of The Thin Light of Freedom, winner of the Lincoln Prize “Joanne Freeman of Yale calls attention to the scandalously frequent role of violence in the United States Congress across 28 tense years culminating in the Civil War. She describes many varieties of Congressional violence, including bullying, fighting in the halls of Congress, fisticuffs, guns, knives, duels and threats of duels. With painstaking research, she penetrates the conspiracy of silence imposed by sources frequently reluctant to publicize the embarrassing truth. The reader is surprised that such an important story should have waited so long to be told.” ―Daniel Walker Howe, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of What Hath God Wrought “Congress in the 19th Century was a violent place to work. Legislators let out their sectional rage on each other, throwing punches and wielding weapons, in an institution that made our current politics look downright tame. In her riveting narrative, Joanne Freeman unpacks this volatile world to explain why the relations between elected officials became so brutal.” ―Julian Zelizer is a political historian at Princeton University and author of The Fierce Urgency of Now"[Freeman] excavates a little-discussed aspect of American history in this scholarly but brisk and accessible account . . . French’s long-standing friendship with the unmemorable Franklin Pierce provides fresh insight into the political culture of the time, and the descriptions of the tragicomic Cilley-Graves duel and the horrific caning of Charles Sumner are detailed and thoughtful . . . Freeman grants followers of modern politics a look back at another fascinating, impassioned period of change in which Congress became full of 'distrust, defensiveness, and degradation,' mimicking the constituents at home." ―Publisher's Weekly"A finely researched and well-written examination of the often overlooked legislative breakdown that preceded the Civil War." ―Booklist"A thought-provoking and insightful read for anybody interested in American politics in the lead up to the Civil War." ―Library Journal (Starred Review)

After finishing reading this book, reading the notes and bibliography I can't help but want to know why? Why we're Southerners so enraged? Why did they use fists instead of words? Honor only? The author reveals all the fighting that occurred but I was often left wondering what caused individuals to become enraged. Just pointing out the fighting that went on is very revealing in itself but more needed to be said about specific "offences" that spurned congressmen into fighting. Southerners were just a bunch of hotheads and then Northerners took up the mantle later? Why specifically? Perhaps a companion book should be written focusing on one decade at a time in congress before the Civil War.

The Field of Blood is a careful examination of the level of violence manifested in the United States Congress in the tense and violent years of the 1830s, 40's and 50's. Congress in those distant years was a battlefield in which Northerners and Southerners came to the field of battle equipped with canes, guns, rifles, swords and firsts. Dueling was a mark of manhood in the bellicose Southern slave culture. An 1838 duel between Congressmen Cilley of New Hampshire resulted in his death by gunshot fired by his opponent Graves of Kentucky. This was the only person killed in a duel who was a sitting congressman. Freeman recounts the famous caning of Charles Sumner the abolitionist senator from Mass. at the hands of Preston Brooks of S. C. The picture Dr. Freeman of Yale paints is a violent and hate filled time in American history. The book is filled with period illustrations and includes an extensive bibliography and footnotes. We modern Americans sometimes are appalled at the battles in the present congress but we should remember that over a century ago the enmity in the congress was at a much higher level. A well researched book deserving the attention of lovers of history. Recommended.

I was very pleased with this book. Joanne Freeman has brought out a hidden history of the contentions in Congress during the antebellum era, contentions that sometimes, but not always, centered on the very issues that pushed the sections to the Civil War. Freeman uses as her flashlight on this history the life of Benjamin, a functionary in Congress & in the Lincoln Administration (& the Pierce Administration) who was "present" at many of the major DC events from about 1830 all the way to the Andrew Johnson presidency. Since he wrote lots of letters, was a sometime journalist & kept a diary, lots of the information about the battles in Congress can be found in his personal materials. Knowing this history will enrich your understanding of American political history. And it can serve as a tonic to proclamations that this "contemporary" Congress or that is the most violently split of any in our history. The photos, pictures & maps in the book reproduced well on my black & white Kindle.

A flawed book that deserved to be a good journal article. Too much repetition here of basic stories of individual members of Congress fighting each other in the years leading to the Civil War. If the words "bowie knife" and "bullying" were removed, its pages would shrink. My main problem is that no one fairly familiar with mid-19th century America will learn much from the investment in time taken to read Professor Freeman's book on emotional and physical violence by members of Congress. (By the way, her last name is perfect for that of a Civil War historian.)The terrible system and logic of Southern slavery was the basic cause of the Civil War and the national political problems preceding it.My secondary problems are matters of style. While I appreciate footnotes and sources, it seems overkill to have about one third of the total book devoted to this purpose. I also am not a fan of overly fulsome acknowledgments (here three pages worth) by an author: Why do I need to know Professor Freeman enjoyed eating breakfast at Meredith's Bread in Kingston, New York? Finally, I detest the overuse of the words "literal" and "literally." There must be at least ten such usages scattered here, climaxing with two separate cases on the last two pages of the book. "...on a -- literally--dark and stormy night." p 284 and on p. 285, " ...to proclaim his politics to the world almost literally until his dying day."

Reading the prelude to the war through the lens of the Congress was very insightful. The bullying and stifling of free speech in congress is not something taught in school. Congress was a reflection of the nation as a whole. Well written

Very basic. Maybe good for a novice who doesn't have any inclination to look on what is available free on line. However the typos and misspellings are unacceptable. Wouldn't you think that someone should know that "Echo" clearly being used as a proper noun, should be capitalized when referring to the device that is the subject of the book?

This is a silly user guide. I wouldn't even call it a user guide as much as it is a lengthy promotion of Echo. Doesn't give much good information.

Pitiful. Nothing that you can't learn with 5 minutes on a Google search.

Only a fair amount of info that can be found anywhere.

At least it's only 99 cents. A tome that's impossible to read or to understand the reason it was developed.

Recently I got an Amazon Echo as a birthday gift but I did not achieve its best benefits. This book opened my eyes by introducing me with such an interesting and brilliant device’s ultimate benefits. It is an invaluable book, no doubt, as it guide you to to do more with Alexa even you are a new as well as the expert get something new to try with Alexa. It is not just gadget, rather I got this like a personal assistant and this book teach me perfectly on how to make it works. If you think of maximum benefits of this handy device, I would like to recommend this book to get a clear and step by step guideline.

My problem is the general focus on current matters. I tend to reach back in time. First try was to recover the date JFK was assassinated. Tried half a dozen variations of the question. Answers were along the line of "I don't understand the question or can't find anything. Finally entered "John F Kennedy. Answer was president of the US frown xxx to xxx (forgotten dates). If memory is right (not always the case), the year of the assassination wasn't included, gave the thing to one who needs to know the time or the winner of the football game.JJS

My father is one hundred years old, legally blind and has an inquiring mind. Echo can answer a lot of questions. What is the population of New York State? What is the temperature outside? Who were the first 10 presidents of the United States.? She can also interface with our lighting. Alexa, turn on the lamp please! We turned off the purchasing ability to be safe, but absolutely love this techno miracle. If I leave Dad for an hour, I can just "drop in" and talk to him over the echo without him needing to answer or pick up the phone. He can also call me by saying " Echo, call my daughter". ( You do need an extra piece of inexpensive equipment to do this). LOVE ECHO!
