If you have 1) listened to the radio or 2) enjoy pop music, you will find Ron Gerber’s book interesting and highly entertaining, whether or not you have any interest in hosting a radio program. Although “Between the Songs†is full of helpful information on on-air radio technique, it’s Ron’s engaging writing style and his amusing anecdotes from a long career in radio that make the book a delight to read.
The author's exuberance and love of music expressed throughout the book is infectious. In addition to being a fun read there is a lot of good reference material contained within, including a guide to various artists CDs, a list of songs sorted by BPM, and a list of the author's favorite tunes. And if you haven't discovered Ron's radio show, be sure to check out Crap From The Past!
I am really sorry to say that in my opinion this book is not really a step by step guide to making radio magic. It is more a bio of the author and his radio show. There is lots of information about CD players, MP3s, Casey Kasem... Half the book is given over to a list of songs presenters might want to play in their shows, air dates of the author's own radio show, a list of songs played at people's weddings, and a huge list of pop songs listed by BPM (beats per minute).If you want to know all about the author's radio show and broadcasting career, this is the book for you. If you really want to learn how to be a radio presenter I suggest you join your local community or hospital radio station.The salient information in this 394-page book could be condensed to 10 pages.If you have never set foot in a broadcast studio then this book may be worth a read. If you have 10 or more shows under your belt then you are on your way.
The great radio instructional section is a must read for anyone wanting to go in Community Radio, but, some stuff gets too technical for the common man I think. Also in Ron's Dream Jukebox, I think the stuff about the Steve Hoffman Forums should have been left out, thats just not needed in my view
I loved this book. Sure, it was hard to put down, chock-full of anecdotes and so easily readable that you can hear Ron's special-sauce radio voice speaking aloud every word -- but wow, I learned something too! It takes an insider to make something look easy (even when it isn't), and I felt ready to give this whole radio thing a try before I even got to the last page. Even if you don't plan on doing the radio thing, just seeing how it all got and gets done -- decade after decade, too, always adjusting for the current styles and expectations -- is truly educational. But if you DO plan on DJing, at ANY level, this is a must-have for your library.
Ron Gerber set out to write a manual for hosting a public radio specialty show like his beloved "Crap from the Past," which has developed an international following from the studios of community radio KFAI Minneapolis. That textbook doesn't exist, and that alone makes "Between the Songs" invaluable. But it's also a companion piece to the radio show, an appreciation of "American Top 40" legend Casey Kasem, a guide to DJ'ing the '80s at parties and events, a memoir of his radio career (which included working closely with somebody who went on to far greater fame outside radio), and a history of the compilation CD (from both a music and mastering/engineering standpoint)."Crap" specializes in the Lost Hits of the '80s (and other music that goes with it). Gerber is quick to point out himself that the show is a niche--as are most successful specialty shows on broadcast radio. "Crap" is cheerfully not for people who want to hear "Don't You Forget About Me" into "Livin' On A Prayer," and it's possible that you might not find anything in that above list that you connect to. But if you did, get this book. And if you are somebody who has always wanted to host a radio show, then cracked the mic for the first time to realize it's not as easy as it seems, (and that includes you, new podcasters), definitely get this book.
This book is a must-buy for any fan of Ron's radio show. As a former radio personality and all-around music/chart geek, I found myself reading most of this book in one sitting. Ron takes the reader through his personal odyssey from his earliest days as a teenage Top 40 fan, to his current gig as host of his own community radio show in Minneapolis. His chapters on radio technique and behind the scenes anecdotes could serve as a solid lesson plan for aspiring radio personalities. However, my favorite parts of the book were the chapters on Ron's favorite music, much of which he shares weekly with his loyal listeners. His own critiques of his past radio shows are brutally honest and entertaining. The entire book is written as if Ron is sitting right across from the reader, just pouring out every bit of knowledge and experience he's picked up along the way. As an added bonus for the print version, Ron adds some "Gerberesque" nuggets to the (usually deadly dull) subject index, which only adds to the fun. All-in-all, Between The Songs is a unique, entertaining read from a most unique, entertaining and knowledgeable individual.
Absolutely fascinating! Feels just like you're sitting across from the author, listening to him tell the story. A riveting read, that teaches you how to do this in the best way possible - via the experience of someone that's been there!
