BEWARE. NOT A BOOK. MORE LIKE A PAMPHLET. NOT WORTH SIX BUCKS. SHOULD BE A FREE GIFT WITH THE PURCHASE OF ANOTHER BOOK.

Supposedly an educational book for children, this slim volume contains in intolerable number of mistakes of fact and errors of science. TIME should be ashamed, as should the author and scientific advisor.

I purchased this book in conjunction with a telescope for my niece. This book was much smaller than I believed it to be and the pictures and wording were just ok for a 7 year old. She glimpsed the book and put it down. Oh well.

The book is filled with beautiful pictures and lots of information on the Solar System. Well done.

If you're looking at engines like axiom, ogre, irrlicht, etc... and wondering how they do that... THIS is the book for you.Just make sure you've read at least an intro c# book and 1 or 2 direct3d books.I'm loving this book, I've read 1/4th of it over the period of my workshift... just can't put it down.Things like octrees were completely confusing me, and lynn does a great job explaining it.-1 star for not doing an octree implementation instead of a quad tree (so far... i haven't read the whole book yet), oh and i saw a "GOTO" statement in his code, which always urks me in OOP.

Well written and proofread. One of the very few books out there which uses C# for DirectX training. Recommend some familiarity with C# before starting as some issues such as interfaces come up quickly.

I think the word "introduction" in the book's title is the source of some of these bad reviews (that, and source code that initially had some bugs -- that problem has been remedied..see the Apress Forums for updated code). This book is not really introductory and is not really a DirectX9 tutorial. Instead, the author assumes a working knowledge of the DX9 object model and at least a basic knowledge of 3D design fundamentals.What the book does offer is a walk-through for building a working game engine, complete with physics models and AI, using managed DirectX 9 libraries. As such, this is the only book on the shelves that explores this new topic.

Not only is it not good design, the code itself doesn't even come close to running.

Lynn T. Harrison, Introduction to 3D Game Engine Design in C# (Apress, 2003)The main problem with Lynn Harrison's book is that, well, the code doesn't compile. Which isn't his fault; Microsoft made some changes in the version of the DirectX Software Development Kit that came out just after the book's release that compromised the code. But nine months go by, and no code update? Not a promising sign.That aside, this is a lucid, easy-to-understand book about, well, 3D Game Engine design. There could have been clearer explanation in some places, and it should have been noted at the start that the book wouldn't be presenting the code in an order the reader could type it in himself (typing in book code will beat downloading it from the website, where learning is concerned, every time). But getting past those minor problems, this is a quite workable piece of writing, and anyone who's been programming in C# for a few months should know enough to get the hang of the basics, and be able to pick up the rest from the book itself. I bought more than 10 books within the last 2 months, they are all about 3D games, C#, MMORPG. This book is definitely one of the best. It gives almost all I need, as a novice hobbist would like to stick to C#/DirectX.1)IntroductionThe book sticks perfectly to its title. It introduced almost all the elements a novice needs to build a 3D game. Though it seems to be in a rush to get the book well-organized, it by no means means that it's not informative. It shows you all you need to model a 3D engine from scratch, and with all the keys to bring the model to reality.2)C# and DirectXI assure you that there're not much (if not none) books explain this combination C#+DirectX, not even Microsoft documents will shed some lights on it. However, you can sneak into the details from this book. Since I demand more on the DirectX in C#.Piece of advice:If you'd stick to C#/DirectX and want to kick things off quick as an novice, buy this book. Else if you go C++, OpenGL, not yet make up your mind, wanna be a professional rather than a hobbist, and etc., go buy C++ Gurus books.

The code in the book (and downloads) was strung out over more pieces than I feel was neccesary (making it conveluded and complicated).When reading a chapter, it just randomly inserts some code, but doesn't tell you where it should go in your code or why (or the code that surrounds it so you could at least find it).Half of the code in the download is comments, but they're not useful, just the default comments that C# uses like: 'Summary of following code goes here'.I do applaud the author for leaving out some of the more advanced topics that could cover a book by themselves (i.e. networking); but with that said, I was dissapointed at the apparent testing of the code and editing of the book (quite a few errors in only the fist chapter).Having worked with RAD programming for years and basic to intermediate experience with DirectX and C#, I was hoping this book would bring all the pieces together...guess I'll look somewhere else...

For those who have already had an introduction into DirectX, this book is a godsend. If you know a little bit about DirectX and are ready to take the next step in designing your own engine this is the book to get. Just for the engine structural knowledge I have gained from reading this book it was well worth it, and that's not including all of the implementation examples it gives you, such as Terrains, Meshes, Cameras, and Particle Effects to name a few that I liked. If you don't know anything about DirectX, this book will probably be hard to follow. If you do know DirectX then this book will be very easy to follow. What isn't in comments is explained enough (in my opinion) in the paragraphs preceding each class and method. If you are still having trouble understanding this book then I would recommend reading an 'Introduction to DirectX' book, not an 'Introduction to Game Engine Design USING DirectX' book. All in all, this book was extremely worth it. The author definitely has experience in this field. The book's title may be deceiving to some, if you only read the first and last couple words and skip the 5 words in the middle. The previous reviews were incorrect about this book. If you have a little bit of understanding of DirectX, and would like to see how to implement some elements of a game, like the ones i mentioned previously(and there are more than that), then definitely buy this book.

I'm a big fan of Josh Burker (I think he's part magician), and really enjoyed his first book: The Invent To Learn Guide To Fun. I had a hard time waiting for this follow-up volume to arrive, but it was worth the wait. As always, his combination of "recipe" directions and "tinkering" recommendations give a lot of room to explore the project idea he provides - and there are so many great ones.I may have to invest in an embroidery machine - TurtleStitching is what's caught my attention at the moment!

Josh has once again written a book that is indispensable for teachers (and others) who believe that learning to build, make, code, etc. are essential to learning (and fun!). The projects are well chosen, described, and illustrated. And, as other reviewers have said, Josh brings a real whimsy to his projects.

Great book! Has a ton of fun ideas for maker projects for classrooms or homes. I purchased this as a gift for my nephew and he loves it.

The Invent to Learn Guide to MORE Fun is an *awesome* next volume to complement Josh Burker's first The Invent To Learn Guide To Fun! It has tons of great projects that span even more tools and mediums-- from dynamic paper circuit artworks, to cardboard pinball machines, to designing 3D-printed jewelry with code, to musical circuit album covers, and much more. All of these projects are written in very clear instructions with plentiful photo illustrations too. I especially like how the book starts with thoughtful short essays about important concepts like "hard fun" and the roles of play and collaboration in designing and creating activities for learning and making. Not only does Burker lay out a diverse breadth of useful tips and tricks, activity ideas and possibilities, his book gives room and encouragement for readers to remix and create their own version of the activities-- both "recipes and recommendations" as he calls it-- to support us as learners and makers and also push us to be designers and inventors too. This book is a must have for any maker/educator/dreamer of fun things!

A fan of Josh Burker's first project book, it is no surprise at that book two is equally creative, fun, and inspiring. What I like most about these projects is that they provide useful information and a jumping-off point for creating personal, makered projects. Thank you for another great resource for our lab!

I'm a fan of all Dale Sherman books, he is very thorough and leaves you feeling that you have complete knowledge of who he is writing about. If you like Tarantino movies or just curious about the ins and out of the films, read this book...you won't be disappointed.

If you love QT then this book is must have. Even if you think you know it all already, you will learn more here.

A plethora of facts, tidbits and trivia information for the movie buff, Quentin T fan or just entertainment movie historian. It was amazing the detail and depth of information that this author and book provided. I also enjoyed and appreciated where the author discussed some information that is seen as in conflict depending on the source. It was an eye opening and educational foray into the world of entertainment behind the scenes that I had never thought about or read before.Prior to this book I had only watched a few Quentin Tarantino movies (Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2, Reservoir Dogs, From Dusk till Dawn and Natural Born Killers) and in full honesty never gave a whit of a thought to how it was produced, paid for, etc. I had wondered how sometimes it was supported when the movie was very graphic or violent, but there are movies for every entertainment sector (hello 50 shades) so why not? Ironically the one's I had watched are violent ones and in my household met with mixed reviews..to yes that is amazing to why are we watching it I don't get it. After reading the information, who played and was potentially going to play roles in the movies, how they stayed true or deviated from the script, etc. I am more interested in watching some more of the Quentin Tarantino movies. I feel I will definitely have more set opinions on the endings after reading how some directors/producers changed the endings or scenes in the script.Now, this is not a quick read or an easy read. This is an educational read with a fun flare in my opinion. I could not read it straight through, nor should one try because I feel I would have lost some of the history or true fun trivia with each movie if I had tried. If you enjoy movie trivia, knowing how something was created, the behind the scenes moments and other entertainment knowledge or are just an ardent QT fan I would recommend this book to have and to also pull out when watching a QT movie! It has been great throwing out some FAQ about movies as I have watched them with friends recently...everyone was like what,...how did you know that!What do you think of books like this? I was drawn to this story by the concept, as someone who grew up with harem anime and rom coms I could see fun paths a story like this could do... It does keep to the idea it presents to an extent. The Author is clearly a fan of the genre and is having fun writing a fluffy, ultimately silly story. Perhaps it's me who was hoping for a deeper cut into the tropes of the genre instead of playing them fairly straight. But I was underwhelmed...Characters are very flat, and dialog is very stilted and awkward. They all lean so heavily into their tropes that none of them feel real, even compared to the kind of characters their meant to be representing from anime/manga. Everyone speaks in very formal stiff ways much of the times that does not flow well. Conversations often feel more like characters taking turns to monologue then a real conversation. I'm also personally not a fan of the 'script' format of dialog in stories but that one is a matter of preference.Characterization in specificTomo and his family are probably the worst offenders of this their all so over the top (especially Kana, whose stick wore thin REAL fast). They never seemed to feel like a family at all, even an eccentric one like this story is trying to portray... Considering their all technically 'side characters' in this pseudo-anime series where Hiro is the dense main character you could argue that's fine but since they are much more in focus as Tomo is the other lead it really hurts any scene with the family...Mina is another very inconsistent character whose characterization swears back and forth in ways that make it hard to follow. By the end it's framed that's she's come out in a more positive light but her two faced turn was played too hard that the rebound back just fell flat with me... I would argue that this series wouldn't need a 'childhood friend' girl in the harem since Tomo would be taking over that role shortly after but that might just be a narrative preference.Ironically The Chapters from Hiro's perspective work quite well and despite being constantly lauded as the 'generic main character-kun' he's the only one I that felt like a real character... He had some depth to him, his insecurities and loyalty to his friend are shown well... it's not perfect but it definitely rang truer then anyone else in the cast.Tomo him/herself was set up initially as the 'only sane man' or 'side character B' but actually feels more like the infallible LN protagonist Hiro suppose to spoof on. The book hammers on how pretty, kind and intelligent they are to death, it's more then a bit much. There are moments, particularly with Hiro that it works okay, some parts of the amusement park were nice... but there were too many moment that took me out rather then in. By the end of the book she's got many shades of the Sue varietyOverallI don't regret purchasing this book, for what I spent it was an okay read for a free afternoon. I've read worse stories but I've definitely read better. Ultimately at the end of the day it made me think of everything I was hoping the story would be but wasn't(which I will spar this review as that's hardly relevant to actually product). Maybe I'll come back to this series later down the line and try another volume to see if things have improved but for now I'm bowing out at Volume 1.

I feel that this is going to strongly try and play itself as a parody of most harem manga/anime/visual novels/light novels.Checklist to ensure the book follows harem, parody, and Japan's style:-An attempt at manga style artwork (At least on the cover) ✓-A long, lengthy title that might require abbreviation to remember it well ✓-All the "fun" harem cliches/tropes (Or as many as can be fit into a 1 volume book) ✓- Much ridiculousness in its plot and characters ✓- Does it get a laugh? ✓✓✓- Did I enjoy it?✓✓✓-Would I recommend it?✓✓✓Review:Read on:07/05/18My thoughts:Before: The first thing I noticed besides the cover, was the title. It's lengthy like most light novels or manga that usually get some kind of anime adaptation or live action adaptation. It kind of also speaks to me as if it really wishes to be seen as a parody of sorts when reading it. But of course, I know this isn't the first time someone has attempted to poke fun at these tropes in manga or anime. So, I'll properly judge it after a nice read through it.Final: Wow I really enjoyed this book. I think maybe because it's that romance and fluff I enjoy so much.(I guess I need to actually accept it as another one of my guilty pleasure genres.)Also yeah this book pokes some fun at the harem cliches and tropes, but really focuses most on being a fun gender-bend romance story. And I can totally see this may be becoming a live-action drama series or anime if it wasn't more addressed to the Western audience.But I would also like to say that the author he did a good job and is clearly very familiar with anime tropes, light novels, and the romance genre surrounding anime.And lastly, I will say that I look forward to the next installment in the story.Recommends to:If you liked The Hentai Prince and The Stony Cat Volume 1 you'll find a few similar themes here and there are a few others I could recommend but this one has a very similar trigger to what this story does.Hope you enjoyed my review!! This is an enjoyable quick read, suitable for age 12 or so and up ( I'm 37). Definitely hits all the expected tropes, with anime style descriptions and character archetypes. I'll probably read it again, along with a sequel.Minor criticisms: Could use a little proofreading, but much better than a lot of Kindle books out there. The dialogue wasn't incorporated into the rest of the text, but was set off into separate paragraphs with the speaker's name in brackets at the beginning. I think it would greatly improve this book by using things like "he said", "she cried", etc.Major criticism: I felt like the gender swap was kind of underplayed. The mc has about one day of angst about suddenly becoming a girl, and then is completely okay with it. Getting registered for school was a bigger deal than "holy crap, I'm a girl!". A little more depth there would have been cool.And that's as deep and thoughtful as I'm going to get about a light novel, unless I get asked to do so.

Reading it for class (MACE at Franciscan University of Steubenville), but it's a beautifully written book and Pope Benedict's explanations take you very deep in your faith. I have recommended it to my friend who runs RCIA because it puts so many concepts about teaching and learning about the Catholic Church into words that are very touching and helpful.

Interesting account by the man who was in charge of what he thought they were doing.

I have occasionally tried to figure out why we needed the CCC specifically when other Catechisms existed, this helped me see even deeper wisdom in its creation.

I recommend this book to everyone involved in passing on the Good News, little children up to adults. It is the framework on how to tailor your every week sessions and how to be aware of the fact that everything about the Catholic faith is in the Catechism, but not only as a reference book, but as a lifestyle defined by the great commitment you make when you say yes to Jesus.

Cardinal Ratzinger has produced a small and worthwhile book consisting of short lectures and articles presenting his insight into the Catechism of the Catholic Church. In the preface, he notes with satisfaction that the Catechism has been enthusiastically adopted by the Christian public although some establishment academics hold it askance. In this book, he assists those eager to embrace the Catechism with his accessible commentary on various aspects of the Catechism. In my view, the most significant chapter deals with the "biblical realism" of the Catechism which treats the Jesus of the Gospels as the real Jesus, in contrast to the absurd reconstructions of idle professors who peddle their fictions as the so-called "historical Jesus." He also has a chapter on the relation of Judaism and Christianity which is in welcome contrast to the recent defective and mediocre reflection on the issue by a group associated with the U.S. Bishops' conference. We are fortunate to have the quality work of a distinguished theologian like Cardinal Ratzinger when we are deluged by so much mediocrity from academia.
