I've read this book 3-4 times at this point. With each reading, I find a piece of advice to pull from that feels extremely poignant to what is currently going on in my life.Irv Yalom is one of my therapy heros. While I've never met him, I find myself pulling from his advice in many different circumstances. Unlike many psychiatrists, Yalom does not pathologize. He seems to treat people like people and encourage future therapists to do so as well. As a therapist myself, when I am feeling lost, I often think "what would Yalom say about this?"I think we are in a time where despite immense progress, going to therapy is still stigmatized (even in the field). I appreciate how Yalom speaks openly about the importance of his own therapy on his progression to becoming a better therapist. I think that this book is important for anyone to read but especially for those who want to understand why therapy is so important and how healing it can be.

It is exciting and refreshing. So, he gives advice. At his age he deserves to give something more than he has to the profession that is so much a part of one's identity. So my advice? Get it and read it, if you are a therapist or plan to be one; take it one chapter at a time if you are a client or patient - use it on your journey; humble yourself to try something new, again, better, different, old school, if you are a therapist and don't have time for anything but earning your CEU's. Take your time! Be in the here and now when you read it! Breathe deep breaths. Notice your responses to the gifts he has given and to what he has received and ask if you are giving and receiving, both, as well. Soak in Yalom's wisdom; he has written his share, and logs 30+ years of experience. Yalom's ideas are often not his own but he has a nice way of sticking in your mind; they have served me well in my own profession and journey; but ignore - even scoff - at his arrogance. All of his writing has that edge and there's so much more to focus on here.

If you are a therapist, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. In fact, I believe it should be required reading for all counselors. There are also a host of very valuable lessons for those who are seeking therapy or are interested in self-exploration in general.

This was required reading for a psychotherapy class that I took, but I would have enjoyed reading it either way. The chapters were short, the language was easy, and the writing felt very intimate. I found it infinitely interesting to hear about the experiences of someone who has practiced psychotherapy for so long, there were many things I would have never even considered - either as patient or therapist. This is definitely a book I plan to keep near by throughout the remainder of my coursework and hopefully into my own practice.

Simply one of the best books on therapy you can own, from a therapist's perspective or a client's. It provides such wonderful insight for a neophyte on many difficult subjects and general questions alike. I read it at least once a year as a psychotherapist to remind myself of what we are all capable of in this field and how the relationship and empathy should always be at the forefront of my mind.

Yalom writes this book in a way that is easy to read and keeps you interested. Good read for any therapist, but especially has been helpful for someone just starting in the field.

Irvin Yalom is a prolific author, Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at Stanford University, and at the time of writing this book had over 35 years of clinical practice.His book is essentially 85 tips for professional counselors on how to get the most out of therapy. Each tip is a chapter so you get a tip and then an explanation of the tip. I have been a serious student of the history of western religions for 5 or 6 years, with emphasis on the beginnings and early years of Christianity in the context of the cultures, philosophies and religions of the time (Jewish, Greek, Roman, Persian etc.), and the subsequent development of the 6th-7th century world in which Islam arose and flourished. I have accumulated a sizable reference collection and thought I hadn't missed very much. But I just ran across Michael Cook's 'Muhammad', and it is the book I would recommend that any interested beginner read for a short account of Muhammed and the origins of Islam. Only 89 pages, it is especially good on the relationships between Islam and its Arabian cultural roots, and between Islam and Judaism & Christianity. The writing style is so clear and effective that it took my breath away more than once. Other reviewers here criticize it as an apology for Islam, as speculating things that are in dispute, and as not being the best source on this subject. The first says less about this book or about Islam than it does about the reviewer. The second is true but trivial - Cook is clear that he is speculating when he does and it is a strength of this book that he is willing to. From my extensive reading, there is nothing in his speculations that is unreasonable. On the third, there are other good introductory books such as Karen Armstrong's 'History of God' and 'Islam', but this is the best well-written short treatment I have seen. Cook wrote a short, clear book in part by leaving out all the "maybes" and "so-and-so doesn't agree with this theory" verbiage. If you want a longer, every question & detail covered, a struggle to get through, reference-style treatment, well, they're out there. That's not what this is.

Michael Cook's brief biography of Muhammad meets all the criteria of a fine, insightful analysis, worthy of repeated readings. I had first come across it in a graduate school seminar on "Muhammad and the origins of Islam" back in 1989, and I was immediately struck by its conciseness, its getting down to basics in narrating the life and historical fact of Muhammad. More, Cook adds on chapters putting Muhammad in historical and religious perspective of Middle Eastern monotheism, which cover the monotheist understanding of the universe, law, politics and history.Throughout, Cook's narrative and analysis makes splendid reading, and one gains significant insight by repeated re-readings. I would recommend this short book to anyone wishing to get a first orientation to Muhammad, Islam, and the Qu'ran.

Books in the Past Masters series are always outstanding.

I enjoyed it as much as I had enjoyed Cook's A Short History of Quran. He writes, plainly and is compellingly very impressive.

Was a good little book. Even though it is small it is chocked with interesting information and was well worth the purchase.

An interesting and original semi-biography. If you want a chronological description of his life, then this is not for you. But if you are interested in an original perspective, check out this small book.

You can't really have Digital Signal Processing without math if you are trying to actually use it for any useful purpose, but if calculus twists your brain into a pretzel this might at least make the pretzel taste a little better ...

Some sections do have equations that seem critical to understanding specific topics. The whole book seems more like cliff notes version of an in-depth book on DSP. I found very few sections to be intuitively understandable, most seemed like instead of writing equations, the author spelled them in English.

Wanting a very basic outline that was much more prose than math, I was delighted with Dr Bore's style. His examples were few but very clear, and I know a fast reread will sharpen my awareness of the 'art' of DSP.

Some of the songs are incomplete, i.e. chorus only without verses. I bought the book for one song, needing the complete version. The book description doesn't notate which are complete and which are chorus only versions. Since a customer can't examine the book prior to purchase, a better description of the contents is imperative.If your needs aren't that specific, this lead sheet book should be fine. However, if you buy this book needing a complete song, you may end up with only the chorus.

The "good old songs" in this book spark a lot of warm memories for me and make me want to pick up my guitar. I like almost everything about the book, including:- the wide selection of hymns, gospel songs, and early praise choruses.- the difficulty level of chords (lots of songs in C, D, G, A, etc, but also having enough 7th, major 7th, minors, and sus chords to keep the songs pleasing).- the lay-flat binding.- the alphabetical listing.A few things I don't like:- The print, though still very readable, is smaller than in The Praise and Worship Fake Book: An Essential Tool for Worship Leaders, Praise Bands and Singers!- It does not list songs by their home keys (another helpful feature of the Praise and Worship Fake Book linked above).- Hal Leonard copyrighted the old hymns they included, or at least these arrangements of them. (I didn't think "Amazing Grace" was copyrighted!) Such commercialization of old hymns smacks of greed to me. This is a good collection of older Gospel songs. The songs are in the original key but are simplified in fake book style. My husband and I lead worship at church and this book (actually, fake book style books in general) make my job easier. I will never be a concert pianist and my piano style is simple, so this book is helpful in allowing me to SOUND more professional than I feel.

I love the Fake Books. I took piano lessons a long time ago, but I find using these much more enjoyable. I still love playing my piano and love all of the variety of music available in the fake book format.

I believe I would rate this at a 5 instead of a three if I had ordered the book and not the kindle edition. Put my kindle on the piano, too small to have more than some of hymn on screen, but not enough for playing to make it larger. Love the selection, many I do not have in other piano books. My first try with a musical kindle edition, just not for me.

Includes 449 favorite hymns, melody line plus chords are great for vocalists and instruments. Love the ring binding so it stands on the piano or organ. Bought as a gift for "me"! Great for today's church worship services.

This has lots of songs to fake. If you are like me and can't read music for both hands at once (how do you do that?), then fake books are great because you can use the chords indicated and fill in as your skill permits. As you get more practice, you can add to it. It's adjustable! The print is medium to small in size and each song starts right after the previous one even if there's not much space, so you don't get much room to doodle.

I have found more than a dozen songs that have glaring errors in the melody lines. No final proofreading was done, apparently. I have the original copies of most of these songs that have the errors to compare with.

The message is not only read, but it is absorbed by osmosis.For anyone who desires to know more about Joseph Campbell's philosophy, read this book -- whatever is not totally understood will still not detract from the final outcome -- your "aha!" moments far outweigh the concentration necessary to complete this short but concentrated tome.

I love Joseph Campbell's works. Although this is very scholarly written, and at times difficult to read, It's worth culling out the key important points of Myth, Metaphor and Religion. Earth's new view of Religion and Myth should be any photo of our known Universe as viewed through the telescopic view of the HUBBLE TELESCOPES and later advanced telescopes. The Bible and the Koran and other religious texts written with a world view 2000 or more years ago just doesn't fit the Mythology of today.

This book gives many examples of the relativity apparent in religious symbols during the worlds time line. It is a book to study not a quick read. The center of mystical relativity is focused more on yoga Chakra, then Buddhism outward until beliefs that barley touch modern logical scientific thinking. Yoga meaning: oneness with one's inner-self," matches the the book's title. This book answers a question I have heard muttered many times, "Why is America having so many social behavioral problems?" "Why is the world in chaos?" The book explores the quantum leap advancement of mankind in relationship to the archaic belief systems; dissolving the very foundations of the collective unconscious mind.

Love this book series!!! So great to teach our Indian culture to Indian-American kids! It would be awesome to see more festivals represented (e.g., Christmas in India, Sankranti, Ganesh Chaturthi, etc.). Also, what would really be cool is if Neel and Maya visited each state in India and learned about their food, culture, clothing, language, important sights to see, etc. India is such a beautifully diverse country, and it would be great to showcase the diversity of each state in this book series so that Indian American kids can be proud of their heritage!

My kids are crazy about this book. We read it three nights in a row. Both entertaining and informative. We have read all books by Vivek and Ajanta, and this was no exception.

We can't get enough of this book! My 5 year old son has been dancing around the house since we first read it! He's not usually interested in dance but the way the book talks about the holiday and shows everyone participating in it really sparked something for him! It's fantastic and opened up a whole new way for us to have fun together!
