I was struggling to understand my textbook (Lawson) and my instructor. I would read the textbook and feel like I barely understood. Then I would go to class and get asked deep theoretical questions and run on wild speculation about what is going on in Justice Scalia’s head. When it was all over I was completely confused. This book solved the problem. It is clear and concise and it does a very thorough job of covering the essentials. Even if this book only contained the section on Chevron, Mead, and Skidmore it would be worth it. I have not taken my admin law test yet so I will post an update once I see if I understand as well as I think I do.

This book pretty much saved me in Admin Law. With a professor who was often unclear, I turned to this supplement for clarity and more in depth explanations. Professor Beerman is an excellant professor and extends this to his supplement-writing.

First: the subtitle is misleading. `Affirmative Action' is a complex, much-debated term. Sander and Taylor are favorably disposed toward it, `affirmative action' being those actions independent of special preferences designed to enhance minority representation. Such actions would include the development of deeper applicant pools, the creation of pre-matriculation programs to help foster later success, the structuring of relationships with potential feeder schools, and so on. Special preferences, on the other hand, represent the overt conferring of advantages, e.g., admitting minorities through separate committees using different standards, such that, e.g., minorities might be admitted--as a matter of policy--whose SAT scores are 250-300 points lower than those of regular admittees. The general public supports affirmative action but, in general, does not support special preferences. Hence, the subtext of the book's subtitle: `affirmative action' is used as an expression that masks behaviors of which the general public disapproves. In Sander and Taylor's view, affirmative action is good, special preferences deleterious, though the former term sometimes includes the latter practices. Why are special preferences deleterious? Because they create mismatches between student skills/achievement levels and the level of institution to which they are being admitted. If a student is surrounded by students who are more skilled than him/her and if teachers routinely teach to the class average, the student who is statistically below that average is likely to feel lost, confused, alienated and frustrated and, as a result, perform poorly.Given the fact that all schools seek additional minority students and offer them preferences of various kinds, the result is a succession of mismatches with a resulting cascading effect. The student whose skills and achievement levels would lead to admission to a flagship public institution matriculates, instead, at an elite private institution. The admissions officials at the flagship public then find that the students they would `normally' admit are now at Princeton and Dartmouth, so the flagship public admits students who would normally be admitted by a regional public or a second or third-tier private, and so on down the academic foodchain.Sander raised this issue initially in a famous article published in the Stanford Law Review. (The mismatch issue was raised decades ago by, among others, Thomas Sowell.) His focus was elite American law schools and he argued that the mismatches between minority law students' skills/achievement levels and the schools in which they had matriculated brought negative results: poor grades, high dropout rates, failures on the bar exam. The attempt to bring more minority students into elite law schools actually resulted in fewer minority lawyers. To accept Sander's argument you must accept two notions: first, that teachers always and everywhere teach to the class average; second, that finding yourself within a peer group whose skills and achievement levels approximate your own will lead to your doing your best work. This can be questioned, I think, though the point is one of degree. It could be argued, e.g., that all students would benefit from being stretched. On the other hand, I take Sander's point. As another commentator has put it, many of us who were not trained in physics (but who suddenly needed physics for our job) could learn rudimentary physics. What we would not do, however, is take that entry-level physics course at Caltech. The results to which Sander and Taylor point (disparities in grades, graduation rates, jobs obtained, etc.) are undeniable. They are at pains, however, to demonstrate that those deleterious effects are the results of mismatches.I believe that they argue their case convincingly. They also do it courageously, since their adduced evidence leads them to a host of other unsavory conclusions: the fact that some institutions are consciously skirting or explicitly violating the law or the fact that institutions, foundations, et al. have reduced or forbidden access to their databases when they fear that the resulting research might run counter to their political ideology. In the case of the ABA's bludgeoning of George Mason's law school for not reviving policies which George Mason had found to be deleterious, we get a case study with the tension, drama and injustice of a crime thriller. The evidence which the authors utilize is historical, empirical, theoretical and, in part, autobiographical. There are several case studies that prove to be very useful and informative, including the extended discussion of California's prop. 209, its causes, effects and evasions. The fact that the academy continues to support policies which are demonstrably deleterious is one of the major subtexts of the book. This is a very important book and a number of its conclusions are of deep importance. To mention just one: students in the lowest socio-economic ranges (with GPA's and SAT's that would engender success at elite institutions) are being systematically overlooked by our current system. This includes minority students, for the minority students now receiving the preponderance of special preferences are upper middle class or explicitly wealthy. Many are immigrants, many of mixed-race backgrounds. The notion that affirmative action would result in social mobility for the poor has been effectively forgotten for decades. In addition to harming individuals through mismatches, our current system helps to widen the economic inequalities that now characterize our society. In short, we have a major problem. The authors offer a number of solutions to this problem, many of which are very persuasive. They are far less optimistic with regard to familial and behavioral issues which exacerbate the condition.Sander is a legal scholar/social scientist; Taylor is an accomplished journalist. The collaboration works well. The book is accessible to all general readers and offers a number of charts/graphs which complement the argument. The book offers Sander the opportunity to answer the criticisms lodged against his law review article as well as an opportunity to challenge the evidence and conclusions of the principal defense of affirmative action--Bowen and Bok's The Shape of the River.Highly compelling and highly recommended.

This book resonated so much with my own college experience. I am a white female, but had similar issues as I was originally majoring in a STEM field at an extremely selective (but not Ivy League) university. I was an above average but not outstanding student in high school (mostly A's but only took math up through precalc), and I was admitted to several extremely selective (though not Ivy League) schools. I was overconfident and everyone was telling me I would do fine anywhere since I did well in high school. Long story short, freshman year went badly. I worked as hard as I possibly could but still wound up on academic probation in my first semester. Seeing others drink and party (and keep me up at 4am) but still pass while I was struggling so much made me feel like a complete idiot. Additionally, I wasn't even learning much in the classes I was eeking C's in (and even less in what I was failing) as I didn't really understand the material and was only passing at all thanks to the curve. During my second semester, I took the easiest possible classes just to raise my gpa, regain good standing, and avoid academic dismissal (which worked). I couldn't visualize myself playing this game for the next several years though, as it doesn't exactly promote learning or timely graduation.I considered changing majors and staying at that school, but I was generally miserable anyway. I also hung out with other students, mostly female, who were struggling, flunking classes, and switching to other majors and wondered whether girls were just stupid at math and science. I did some salary research and learned that college major matters more than alma mater in seeking employment. At the same time, I wasn't sure what I wanted and I wanted to explore some. I transferred to community college after the end of my freshman year(while I was technically in good standing, not a lot of colleges are interested in freshman transfer applicants with low gpas) and started from scratch. I was lucky enough to have a supportive family and parents who had graduated from college (though not in math heavy fields).I got A's and B's there, but more importantly I was able to ask questions easily (unlike in university classes, cc class sizes were capped at 40 students). The intro calculus classes were taught to those who had not taken calculus before rather than those who had earned 5's on the AP calculus exams, and I learned far more as a result. I transferred to another (much less selective than the first) university after a year of cc and did well there too. I took courses that were challenging but doable. I ended up majoring in economics, minoring in math, and doing far better career wise than I would have had I simply majored in something that I didn't like and that wasn't marketable at my first university simply because it was easier. I went from a severe overmatch to a mild undermatch (I was among the top students but was still challenged by the classes). While (after a bunch of pain, some anger from my family, having people assume I was slacking off, even having one person ask me if I had drug problems, judging me as stupid or lazy, etc.) I found a path that worked for me, I can't begin to imagine how much harder it would have been if I had been a first generation college student or didn't have a supportive family. I seriously considered dropping out of college as it was; any additional barriers would have made it that much more appealing. I also can't help but wonder how many more underrepresented groups could achieve their goals if they were placed in appropriate courses for their level of preparation.

The Offshore World: Sovereign Markets, Virtual Places, and Nomad Millionaires

Review

"What is the offshore world? When and why did it develop? Who supported its development? Where and how does it operate? How important is it in international commerce and finance today? To find answers to those questions, Palan (International relations and politics, Univ. of Sussex, UK) examines the offshore phenomenon in a broad sense of social and economic change. . . . Summing Up: Recommended. Graduate and Research Collections."―Choice, Dec. 2003."This practice of sovereign bifurcation, by which states divide their sovereign space into heavily and lightly regulated realms, suggests a radical redrawing of state boundaries and an important transformation in the nature of sovereignty and the relationship between state and capitalism. Offshore may be at the very heart of the transformation of modern politics: is it the beginning of 'postglobalization?'"―Future Survey 26:1, January 2004"Ronen Palan asks bold, provocative questions regarding the relationship between sovereignty and the offshore economy and its relevance to state formation, globalization, and the fate of the nation-state. The 'commercialization of sovereignty' is a very effective underlying theme."―Peter Andreas, Brown University"The Offshore World explores the important concept of 'offshore' with a high level of detail and theoretical sophistication. Ronen Palan illuminates aspects of state sovereignty that have not been fully described elsewhere. This book will extend our understanding of how contemporary international society emerged over the last century, while providing insight into how concepts like 'offshore' reshape our thinking about economic phenomena."―Peter Dombrowski, The Naval War College"The Offshore World is a subtle and intriguing look at one of the global economy's most prominent features."―Debora Spar, Harvard Business School

#1,181,008 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

The best study of the offshore economy phenomenon that I came across so far. Despite the fact that this book was published in 2003, it is still worth reading because the author grasped the subject remarkably. The language of this book is worth mentioning as well: it is elegant and articulate.

I bought this book to learn about the past and present history of offshore--both legal and illegal. Instead I got a book on an opinion of capitalism and the nation-state that sounds decidedly reactionary, full of obscure neologisms (i.e. "Fordism" to mean mass production along the lines of Henry Ford)--in short, a term paper from a Marxist sociology class. The author is clearly biased against offshore but tries to sound balanced. I would not mind if he actually discussed offshore (i.e. the historian Eric Hobsbawm is communist but writes decent history books), but he does not--the book is largely about capitalism from a leftist perspective. It doesn't mention off-shore except in passing and by innuendo, along the lines of 'surely much of the money sent offshore must be from illegal activities'. OK. if you say so. A sample exerpt: "So as capitalism 'recomposes' itself (reterritorializes) in front of our stunned eyes [WHY 'STUNNED'? THE AUTHOR DOES NOT EXPLAIN EXCEPT BY INFERENCE TO THE REST OF THE BOOK], by the most artificial means--i.e. through offshore and commercialized sovereignty and the numerical principle [IN A NUTSHELL THESE TWO PHRASES MEAN COUNTRIES SELLING CITIZENSHIP AND INVESTORS INVESTING BASED ON FINANCIAL FIGURES RATHER THAN PHYSICAL INSPECTION OF GOODS], we, the subjects, are in the position of both sovereign consumers/investors driving the new order [SHOULDN'T 'new order' BE CAPITALIZED?] and yet at the same time helpless observers, mere spectators of capitalism's grand journey." Whew! What depth. What rubbish.I could deconstruct this passage in plain english, but the point is: what does this (and the rest of the book) have to do with "The Offshore World"? Nothing. If you are interested in this kind of writing, and in the history of capitalism from a leftist perspective, there are far better books, such as anything by the famous French historian Fernand Braudel. I also recommend the author Ian O. Angell, who is outstanding, as a more right-leaning / free-market oriented author. If you are interested in theories of the state try Thomas Hobbes. But if you are interested in offshore avoid this author. The definitive book on offshore remains to be written.

In slightly under 200 pages, The Offshore World contains an illuminating summary of the global "offshore" system, which comprises offshore banks, export processing zones (EPZs), international banking facilities (IBFs), offshore financial systems (OFCs) or tax havens, flags of convenience, the Euromarket. Note that if you want to do business with one of these entities, you will do better to head for London, Tokyo, Liechtenstein or New York than anywhere outside territorial waters. "Offshore" is a virtual space defined by its exemption from taxes, regulations and other annoying features of the nation-state.Ronen Palan brings an outstanding depth of knowledge of his subject to this book. He traces the roots of the offshore system to the late 19th century, when the concept of sovereign states was developing in ways that often presented obstacles to international traders. The result today is a system of non-sovereign states that has grown in parallel to, and generally with the support of, nation-states. Most of that growth has occurred since the late 1960's, at the time of the profitability crisis and the collapse of the Bretton Woods system. Today an estimated $2 trillion per day passes through the offshore foreign exchange market and 20% of total private wealth is parked in tax havens. And those figures are growing.Aside from the breath-taking sums that flow through a system outside tax or regulatory control, what are the political implications of offshore? Palen's thesis is that nation-states have lost control of the monetary system: The offshore tail is wagging the sovereign-state dog. Wealthy individuals and multinational corporations can simply pick up their financial assets and take them offshore if nation-states don't lower taxes and regulatory requirements to their dictates. And without sufficient funds democratic states are in no position to provide either their populations or offshore facilities with the services and security they expect. The paradox is that offshore has been an inevitable outgrowth of the division of the world into sovereign states.Professor Palan sees the growth of offshore accelerating. Sooner, rather than later, its dark matter will dramatically impact our visible world in ways we cannot yet foresee. "Offshore can end only when either the state system has ended its long half-millennial journey or capitalism itself has been replaced by another system."

This book is primarily focused on why the offshore zones were created and what forces keep them alive and thriving. It gives you a very high level overview from a historical and political point of view.It doesn't explain the mechanics of the offshore, doesn't tell you how they function internally and doesn't tell you what they can be used for by the most of the readers.I'd name this book "History of the Offshore World", because it's really more a historical research and analysis. The book provides a lot of interesting facts but it's pretty hard to read. The style and structure don't highlight major topics and sometimes it starts looking like a braindump. The format is typical for a history book (a lot of text quotes, no graphs or formulas). But for the book of this size (small!) you probably finish it before you get bored. Also, if you are interested in how to offshore US jobs, how to start offshore project in India, how to save on your personal taxes etc - this book is pretty much useless, look for something else.Overall, if you are curious about the offshore and looking for some entry point to get started, this book will help you. But if you need some knowledge about offshore for business, this book probably won't give you any practical skills.

I think this book will be the best variant for those, who didn't read a lot about communication and leadership. It can be a good basis for everyone. Written good, you will read it very fast and easy. Also practical.

I enjoyed the book and recommend the book for beginners. Very educational. It was written so anyone who want to learn about body language could understand.Book is giving you an idea how human psychology works, basic knowledge about body language, types of personalities, I really like the part about simple and straightforward tips on body language and how to notice them.

Very useful guide on "how to read people". Here you will find an explanations of all most common signals, that people use in their communication. I think this book will be the best variant for those, who didn't read a lot about communication and leadership. It can be a good basis for everyone. Written good, you will read it very fast and easy. Also practical.

This is the book for you if you've always wanted to know something about non-verbal communication. "This new guy seems really nice, but there's just something about him.........." This book will teach you how to read what's up with your co-worker's habits, and body language. It also explores different personality types.....interesting. Good aid in helping understand others and improve communication.

How to Analyze People is a well written book about perception and how to see the meaning behind what people convey. Sometimes people say one thing but their body language tells us something different. I used to be indifferent of all this until I got the chance to download and read this book. Now I know better and I am more conscious of what I see as compared to what I hear!

Good book, everything was explained very well. The detail in every step was remarkable. Most college business classes use the same formula but Mr. Sutton expresses another side of it. From his perspective. I recommend it to anyone who desires a better direction to go when it comes to others.

This book really helped me to understand how to build stronger and better relationships, to command more attention, and develop loyal friends, families, and followers. It was so interesting and a really useful read.

Easy to understand & practice

Review

Praise for Introduction to Game Design, Prototyping, and Development   “Introduction to Game Design, Prototyping, and Development combines a solid grounding in evolving game design theory with a wealth of detailed examples of prototypes for digital games. Together these provide an excellent introduction to game design and development that culminates in making working games with Unity. This book will be useful for both introductory courses and as a reference for expert designers. I will be using this book in my game design classes, and it will be among those few to which I often refer.” –Michael Sellers Professor of Practice in Game Design, Indiana University, former Creative Director at Rumble Entertainment, and General Manager at Kabam   “Prototyping and play-testing are often the most misunderstood and/or underutilized steps in the game design and development process. Iterative cycles of testing and refining are key to the early stages of making a good game. Novices will often believe that they need to know everything about a language or build every asset of the game before they can really get started. Gibson’s new book prepares readers to go ahead and dive in to the actual design and prototyping process right away; providing the basics of process and technology with excellent “starter kits” for different types of games to jumpstart their entry into the practice.” –Stephen Jacobs Associate Director, RIT Center for Media, Art, Games, Interaction, and Creativity (MAGIC) and Professor, School of Interactive Games and Media   “Jeremy Gibson’s Introduction to Game Design, Prototyping, and Development deftly combines the necessary philosophical and practical concepts for anyone looking to become a Game Designer. This book will take you on a journey from high-level design theories, through game development concepts and programming foundations in order to make your own playable video games. Jeremy uses his years of experience as a professor to teach the reader how to think with vital game design mindsets so that you can create a game with all the right tools at hand. A must-read for someone who wants to dive right into making their first game and a great refresher for industry veterans.” –Michelle Pun Senior Game Designer, Zynga

#164,850 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

Part 1 of this book (game-design theory) is a clear and illuminating overview of what is obviously a big topic. It makes clear that there's a lot more preparation required when designing a game than many designers realise.Part 2 introduces C#. If you've programmed before, you can skim most of it. Chapter 18 ("Hello World") is a must-read, though, as it introduces Unity and demonstrates how to create a project and add elements to it. (Not having used Unity before, I was shocked that I could create a particle storm with only two-lines of code.)Part 3 walks the reader through creating eight games of increasing complexity.I recommend this book to you if you'd like to learn how to create well designed games using Unity and C#.

As a Software Development student off for the summer, I decided that I could learn C# on my own and get introduced to Unity and actually try to make a game; being an avid gamer, such a thing appeals to me. Introduction to Game Design, Prototyping, and Development seemed like it had very solid reviews and I bought the book in early May of this year, 2015. I must say, I am very happy that I did and this book is a great summer project. There are great insights into the art of game making itself and concepts of probability, an excellent primer on the basics of C#, and very fun and useful tutorials that are very sound from a software development standpoint. Also, the author, Jeremy Gibson, is approachable and actually took the time to answer a few email questions that I have had. It is pretty obvious that he lives for gaming and loves teaching about it and being involved with it. Being very passionate about the subject matter, Jeremy's writing comes off as entertaining and is never boring or flat, at least, in my opinion. The Appendices are also very good and there is a ton of useful information. One must keep in mind that this is an introduction to gaming and C# and is only meant as such. It is a great starting point to get yourself acclimated to the Unity environment, while learning good software techniques and practices in what is probably the best language for Unity--C#.Thanks for reading my review.

Started reading this book on 8/7/2014When i was looking for a book that covered Unity programming (C# that is) i found a few books that seemed like they could very well get the job done. This book is brand new and full of good research. It does not teach you how to program until about page 250. The amount of text on each page is enormous, full of information. Im on chapter 4 already and i feel like before i get to the programming side of this book i will have a better understanding of what i will even be needing to program. There is 8 games that you program near the last part of the book after a thorough intro to C# script in unity. The logic that he programs into the games is broad and clever enough to get you on your feet, and there are many tools and tricks that follow. In conclusion: This book goes deep into game design and getting your ideas into code.I have a large library of books covering animation, programming, art, game design.... and this book seems like one i will be happy to finish.Cheers! 5 out of 5 for how much research is in this book alone Plus how clear he talks in his text.

If you are brand new to programming, this might not be the best book to use as an introduction to the trifecta of Unity, programming, and game design. I would consider it more of an advanced beginner to intermediate level book. If you already know a little programming or if you have read one of the other Unity by Example books, then is a great second step on your path to becoming a game developer.I found Part One of the book, Game Design and Paper Prototyping, to be the most difficult of the three sections. It reads like a college text book with lots of theory and philosophical discussions. Part One begins with a lengthy discussion of what a "game" actually is, discussing the conflicting definitions presented by several people. Next comes a discussion on Game Analysis Frameworks. Mr. Gibson discusses three Frameworks developed by other individuals, and then presents his own Framework. He compares and contrasts his new framework to its predecessors, and explains how they are different and alike. Heavy stuff. Honestly I only made it through Chapter 4 before I put Part One on hold, and moved on to Part Two. I will get back to Part One day, I promise.Part Two begins with more definitions, a summary about the advantages of using Unity and C#, and a brief introduction to the C# programming language, but you quickly move on to the Unity installation and running Unity's demo game: Angry Bots. Next comes a very, very brief (1/2 page) explanation of Unity's various windows. Your first Unity program is the standard "Hello World!", but then you get to "Unity-fy" it by adding some falling cubes. Snazzy! The rest of the Part Two - Chapters 19-27 - include hard-core lessons/lectures in various computer programming topics: variables, Vector3s, Quaternion, boolean operations, conditionals, loops, lists, arrays, functions, object-oriented classes. My favorite chapter was the one on Debugging. You need to learn to love debugging if you are going to be a programmer.Part Three (page 419) starts the fun stuff: building games using Unity. The first game is Apple Picker, and I found it liberating when Mr. Gibson talks about using "programmer art" which is just a placeholder for the "real" art that will be incorporated later. He stresses that you don't need fantastic art to get your game up and running. I know it is common sense, but it was nice to hear those words from an expert. My new mantra is, "Don't worry about the art, just start coding." As for the actual code instructions, they are clear and concise, but they are not what I would call the step-by-step hand-holding variety. How to do something is fully explained once, and after that it is assumed that you will remember the steps. If you don't remember you are directed to the index so you can look up the instructions. If you are new to programming AND Unity this method of instruction might get a little frustrating. The examples/prototypes in this book also have a level of code complexity which is much greater than in other absolute beginner Unity books. You will learn a lot more fancy coding tricks, and not so obvious ways to accomplish a task. Again, this may be intimidating if you have never coded before. So in summary if you have never opened a programming book before, it might be better to start with a book like Unity by Example or Unity in 24 Hours and save this one till you are a little more comfortable with navigating Unity. If you have used Unity before or if you have programmed in the past, this book is a great place to start.

While "Introduction to Game Design, Prototyping, and Development" is a good introduction to game design using Unity, it's a great introduction to the principles of coding. It starts out a little dry with some seriously nerdy game theory (which is valuable in its own right). and then dives into a solid explanation of every topic a novice will need to understand basic coding in general and C# coding for Unity in particular.Well worth the price.

Great Medieval Projects: You Can Build Yourself (Build It Yourself), by Kris Bordessa

From School Library Journal

Grade 4–7—This book looks at medieval society, folklore, and culture between the years 350 to 1450 and provides some hands-on activities along the way. Divided into 12 chapters, the text relates information on kings and queens, knights and armor, warfare, everyday life, and religious life. Projects include making a trebuchet, a marshmallow cannon, some period recipes, and a thatched roof. The material is well written and interesting. The "Words to Know" sections are not consistent in their placement in each chapter; some words appear before the list and, in other cases, in the next section. However, all of the words appear in the glossary so readers can skip directly to it to find words they may not understand. The directions for the projects are easy to follow for the most part, but the location of the supply list is inconsistent from one project to the next. All of the drawings, including those for the finished products, are in the same blue color as the text. Aside from some organizational problems, this is a useful text.—G. The many illustrations provide a good feel to the book and the included vocabulary sidebars will help children reading the book on their own (and this is one history book that many children will find inviting.) There is plenty of good history, easy to read, and sneakily educational."Frisco Kids"I've never been to the Renaissance Faire, but castles, knights and all things medieval are a part of our daily life. So I'll start first with a review of Great Medieval Projects You Can Build Yourself, written by the incredibly creative and talented Kris Bordessa (a Northern California resident). When I first hear the title, I thought "hmmm'. . . we're going to learn how to build a guillotine and pour boiling oil on the mailman from the top floor of our house?" Uh, no. Instead, we learned about medieval beliefs, life in monasteries, the makings of a medieval feast and lots on warfare (a favorite topic among 5 year old boys). This book is aimed at kids 9-12, much older than my kids. But that just means we read 2 pages at a time, instead of reading it cover to cover."Homeschooling Today"A brand-new title, Great Medieval Projects You Can Build Yourself by Kris Bordessa targets an older audience. It is much more than just an activity guide; we were all fascinated by the amount of information presented in its pages. Throughout, the "Words to Know" text boxes define new terms, a great opportunity for vocabulary learning. Frequent "Did You Know?" sidebars encourage a better understanding of the times. Of course, the heart of the book is the "Make Your Own" instructions for projects. Older children will be able to complete these with minimal oversight from parents."Sarah Blick, Associate Professor of Art History, Kenyon College"Wonderfully fun, clearly written, and historically accurate. The illustrations, text, and suggested projects really bring the period to life. Highly recommended!"Steven Ozment, author of A Mighty Fortress: A New History of the German People"Kris Bordessa's minds-on, hands-on guide through the Middle Ages is a bracing immersion in a faraway world for adolescents trying to find their place in the present-day world. "Jennifer Lawler, author of Encyclopedia of Women in the Middle Ages and Encyclopedia of the Byzantine Empire"This book is a great way to encourage your child’s interest in the Middle Ages through clever and creative hands-on projects. Engaging and informative descriptions of the time period also provide thought-provoking content to enrich the experience and spark conversation."Stanley Lombardo, Ph.D."Great Medieval Projects, from Nomad Press, offers young readers a delightful introduction to the Middle Ages, via a series of hands-on crafts projects ranging in complexity from a jester's cap and bells to a functional scale-model trebuchet; Not only will children enjoy these projects, but the adults who supervise the more demanding undertakings will find themselves swept back to the days of Viking raiders and stalwart knights battling in defense of their castles; Great Medieval Projects includes fascinating historical material on medieval customs, language, and crafts and is sure to charm a new generation of boys and girls into a love of the Middle Ages."

Lexile measures range from below 200L for early readers and text to above 1600L for advanced readers and materials. This is a great little book with lots of fun and interesting facts about the medieval period. I feel the projects were a bit weak, but overall the book might inspire a child or student to learn more and perhaps discover, or create, even better medieval projects to build. The projects range from simple recipes to a fairly complex helmet made from plaster of Paris. Many of the projects can be made with materials at hand. The instructions for the projects are somewhat sparse, so additional guidance might be required for younger children who are not skilled at crafting. On the plus side, a lack of details allows more creativity and there is no pressure to make it look "just like the picture". The marshmallow cannon was a particular disappointment, nothing more than a marshmallow shooter (i.e. blowgun) made from PVC pipe, not even vaguely cannon-like.So if you are just looking for medieval projects to build, skip this book and search out the many more interesting and detailed medieval projects available on-line.

We have yet to do any of the projects in this book but have just read the chapters. I was not expected so much information in a project book.

Not only do you get wonderful projects with this book, but it also gives a nice view of history during that time period with small bits of how things were in that period. It comes with step by step instructions as well as pictures, vocabulary for each chapter. We are enjoying this book during our Middle Ages Unit. We are also using this along side Project Middle Ages by Homeschool in the Woods, which you can find at (...).homeschoolinthewoods.com and Knights and Castles by Williamson publishing

Great food ideas to help the learners see what people ate

Fun book with directions so clear that my 9 & 11 year old can do most of the projects by themselves!I wasn't sure about this book when I read the reviews so I checked it out from the library. I bought it within days because I just knew it would be a book that racked up fines!

My first grader loves having me read about the projects in this book. There's also a lot of good background information. I read her a little section about common phrases and now I hear her using them in her play!

Went well with Year 2 TOG curriculum

Wonderful unit.
