Review

Praise for Introduction to Game Design, Prototyping, and Development   “Introduction to Game Design, Prototyping, and Development combines a solid grounding in evolving game design theory with a wealth of detailed examples of prototypes for digital games. Together these provide an excellent introduction to game design and development that culminates in making working games with Unity. This book will be useful for both introductory courses and as a reference for expert designers. I will be using this book in my game design classes, and it will be among those few to which I often refer.” –Michael Sellers Professor of Practice in Game Design, Indiana University, former Creative Director at Rumble Entertainment, and General Manager at Kabam   “Prototyping and play-testing are often the most misunderstood and/or underutilized steps in the game design and development process. Iterative cycles of testing and refining are key to the early stages of making a good game. Novices will often believe that they need to know everything about a language or build every asset of the game before they can really get started. Gibson’s new book prepares readers to go ahead and dive in to the actual design and prototyping process right away; providing the basics of process and technology with excellent “starter kits” for different types of games to jumpstart their entry into the practice.” –Stephen Jacobs Associate Director, RIT Center for Media, Art, Games, Interaction, and Creativity (MAGIC) and Professor, School of Interactive Games and Media   “Jeremy Gibson’s Introduction to Game Design, Prototyping, and Development deftly combines the necessary philosophical and practical concepts for anyone looking to become a Game Designer. This book will take you on a journey from high-level design theories, through game development concepts and programming foundations in order to make your own playable video games. Jeremy uses his years of experience as a professor to teach the reader how to think with vital game design mindsets so that you can create a game with all the right tools at hand. A must-read for someone who wants to dive right into making their first game and a great refresher for industry veterans.” –Michelle Pun Senior Game Designer, Zynga

Part 1 of this book (game-design theory) is a clear and illuminating overview of what is obviously a big topic. It makes clear that there's a lot more preparation required when designing a game than many designers realise.Part 2 introduces C#. If you've programmed before, you can skim most of it. Chapter 18 ("Hello World") is a must-read, though, as it introduces Unity and demonstrates how to create a project and add elements to it. (Not having used Unity before, I was shocked that I could create a particle storm with only two-lines of code.)Part 3 walks the reader through creating eight games of increasing complexity.I recommend this book to you if you'd like to learn how to create well designed games using Unity and C#.

As a Software Development student off for the summer, I decided that I could learn C# on my own and get introduced to Unity and actually try to make a game; being an avid gamer, such a thing appeals to me. Introduction to Game Design, Prototyping, and Development seemed like it had very solid reviews and I bought the book in early May of this year, 2015. I must say, I am very happy that I did and this book is a great summer project. There are great insights into the art of game making itself and concepts of probability, an excellent primer on the basics of C#, and very fun and useful tutorials that are very sound from a software development standpoint. Also, the author, Jeremy Gibson, is approachable and actually took the time to answer a few email questions that I have had. It is pretty obvious that he lives for gaming and loves teaching about it and being involved with it. Being very passionate about the subject matter, Jeremy's writing comes off as entertaining and is never boring or flat, at least, in my opinion. The Appendices are also very good and there is a ton of useful information. One must keep in mind that this is an introduction to gaming and C# and is only meant as such. It is a great starting point to get yourself acclimated to the Unity environment, while learning good software techniques and practices in what is probably the best language for Unity--C#.Thanks for reading my review.

Started reading this book on 8/7/2014When i was looking for a book that covered Unity programming (C# that is) i found a few books that seemed like they could very well get the job done. This book is brand new and full of good research. It does not teach you how to program until about page 250. The amount of text on each page is enormous, full of information. Im on chapter 4 already and i feel like before i get to the programming side of this book i will have a better understanding of what i will even be needing to program. There is 8 games that you program near the last part of the book after a thorough intro to C# script in unity. The logic that he programs into the games is broad and clever enough to get you on your feet, and there are many tools and tricks that follow. In conclusion: This book goes deep into game design and getting your ideas into code.I have a large library of books covering animation, programming, art, game design.... and this book seems like one i will be happy to finish.Cheers! 5 out of 5 for how much research is in this book alone Plus how clear he talks in his text.

If you are brand new to programming, this might not be the best book to use as an introduction to the trifecta of Unity, programming, and game design. I would consider it more of an advanced beginner to intermediate level book. If you already know a little programming or if you have read one of the other Unity by Example books, then is a great second step on your path to becoming a game developer.I found Part One of the book, Game Design and Paper Prototyping, to be the most difficult of the three sections. It reads like a college text book with lots of theory and philosophical discussions. Part One begins with a lengthy discussion of what a "game" actually is, discussing the conflicting definitions presented by several people. Next comes a discussion on Game Analysis Frameworks. Mr. Gibson discusses three Frameworks developed by other individuals, and then presents his own Framework. He compares and contrasts his new framework to its predecessors, and explains how they are different and alike. Heavy stuff. Honestly I only made it through Chapter 4 before I put Part One on hold, and moved on to Part Two. I will get back to Part One day, I promise.Part Two begins with more definitions, a summary about the advantages of using Unity and C#, and a brief introduction to the C# programming language, but you quickly move on to the Unity installation and running Unity's demo game: Angry Bots. Next comes a very, very brief (1/2 page) explanation of Unity's various windows. Your first Unity program is the standard "Hello World!", but then you get to "Unity-fy" it by adding some falling cubes. Snazzy! The rest of the Part Two - Chapters 19-27 - include hard-core lessons/lectures in various computer programming topics: variables, Vector3s, Quaternion, boolean operations, conditionals, loops, lists, arrays, functions, object-oriented classes. My favorite chapter was the one on Debugging. You need to learn to love debugging if you are going to be a programmer.Part Three (page 419) starts the fun stuff: building games using Unity. The first game is Apple Picker, and I found it liberating when Mr. Gibson talks about using "programmer art" which is just a placeholder for the "real" art that will be incorporated later. He stresses that you don't need fantastic art to get your game up and running. I know it is common sense, but it was nice to hear those words from an expert. My new mantra is, "Don't worry about the art, just start coding." As for the actual code instructions, they are clear and concise, but they are not what I would call the step-by-step hand-holding variety. How to do something is fully explained once, and after that it is assumed that you will remember the steps. If you don't remember you are directed to the index so you can look up the instructions. If you are new to programming AND Unity this method of instruction might get a little frustrating. The examples/prototypes in this book also have a level of code complexity which is much greater than in other absolute beginner Unity books. You will learn a lot more fancy coding tricks, and not so obvious ways to accomplish a task. Again, this may be intimidating if you have never coded before. So in summary if you have never opened a programming book before, it might be better to start with a book like Unity by Example or Unity in 24 Hours and save this one till you are a little more comfortable with navigating Unity. If you have used Unity before or if you have programmed in the past, this book is a great place to start.

While "Introduction to Game Design, Prototyping, and Development" is a good introduction to game design using Unity, it's a great introduction to the principles of coding. It starts out a little dry with some seriously nerdy game theory (which is valuable in its own right). and then dives into a solid explanation of every topic a novice will need to understand basic coding in general and C# coding for Unity in particular.Well worth the price.

Great Medieval Projects: You Can Build Yourself (Build It Yourself), by Kris Bordessa

From School Library Journal

Grade 4–7—This book looks at medieval society, folklore, and culture between the years 350 to 1450 and provides some hands-on activities along the way. Divided into 12 chapters, the text relates information on kings and queens, knights and armor, warfare, everyday life, and religious life. Projects include making a trebuchet, a marshmallow cannon, some period recipes, and a thatched roof. The material is well written and interesting. The "Words to Know" sections are not consistent in their placement in each chapter; some words appear before the list and, in other cases, in the next section. However, all of the words appear in the glossary so readers can skip directly to it to find words they may not understand. The directions for the projects are easy to follow for the most part, but the location of the supply list is inconsistent from one project to the next. All of the drawings, including those for the finished products, are in the same blue color as the text. Aside from some organizational problems, this is a useful text.—G. School Library Journal"This book looks at medieval society, folklore, and culture between the years 350 to 1450 and provides some hands-on activities along the way. Divided into 12 chapters, the text relates information on kings and queens, knights and armor, warfare, everyday life, and religious life. Projects include making a trebuchet, marshmallow cannon, some period recipes, and a thatched roof. The material is well written and interesting. . . The directions for the projects are easy to follow. . . this is a useful text"Sacramento Book Review"In this handy and well written guide to medieval life, Bordessa not only teaches about the Middle Ages, but includes in each chapter easy to do, interesting, and educational projects that illuminate each subject. . . The many illustrations provide a good feel to the book and the included vocabulary sidebars will help children reading the book on their own (and this is one history book that many children will find inviting.) There is plenty of good history, easy to read, and sneakily educational."Frisco Kids"I've never been to the Renaissance Faire, but castles, knights and all things medieval are a part of our daily life. So I'll start first with a review of Great Medieval Projects You Can Build Yourself, written by the incredibly creative and talented Kris Bordessa (a Northern California resident). When I first hear the title, I thought "hmmm'. . . we're going to learn how to build a guillotine and pour boiling oil on the mailman from the top floor of our house?" Uh, no. Instead, we learned about medieval beliefs, life in monasteries, the makings of a medieval feast and lots on warfare (a favorite topic among 5 year old boys). This book is aimed at kids 9-12, much older than my kids. But that just means we read 2 pages at a time, instead of reading it cover to cover."Homeschooling Today"A brand-new title, Great Medieval Projects You Can Build Yourself by Kris Bordessa targets an older audience. It is much more than just an activity guide; we were all fascinated by the amount of information presented in its pages. Throughout, the "Words to Know" text boxes define new terms, a great opportunity for vocabulary learning. Frequent "Did You Know?" sidebars encourage a better understanding of the times. Of course, the heart of the book is the "Make Your Own" instructions for projects. Older children will be able to complete these with minimal oversight from parents."Sarah Blick, Associate Professor of Art History, Kenyon College"Wonderfully fun, clearly written, and historically accurate. The illustrations, text, and suggested projects really bring the period to life. Highly recommended!"Steven Ozment, author of A Mighty Fortress: A New History of the German People"Kris Bordessa's minds-on, hands-on guide through the Middle Ages is a bracing immersion in a faraway world for adolescents trying to find their place in the present-day world. "Jennifer Lawler, author of Encyclopedia of Women in the Middle Ages and Encyclopedia of the Byzantine Empire"This book is a great way to encourage your child’s interest in the Middle Ages through clever and creative hands-on projects. Engaging and informative descriptions of the time period also provide thought-provoking content to enrich the experience and spark conversation."Stanley Lombardo, Ph.D."Great Medieval Projects, from Nomad Press, offers young readers a delightful introduction to the Middle Ages, via a series of hands-on crafts projects ranging in complexity from a jester's cap and bells to a functional scale-model trebuchet; Not only will children enjoy these projects, but the adults who supervise the more demanding undertakings will find themselves swept back to the days of Viking raiders and stalwart knights battling in defense of their castles; Great Medieval Projects includes fascinating historical material on medieval customs, language, and crafts and is sure to charm a new generation of boys and girls into a love of the Middle Ages."

This is a great little book with lots of fun and interesting facts about the medieval period. I feel the projects were a bit weak, but overall the book might inspire a child or student to learn more and perhaps discover, or create, even better medieval projects to build. The projects range from simple recipes to a fairly complex helmet made from plaster of Paris. Many of the projects can be made with materials at hand. The instructions for the projects are somewhat sparse, so additional guidance might be required for younger children who are not skilled at crafting. On the plus side, a lack of details allows more creativity and there is no pressure to make it look "just like the picture". The marshmallow cannon was a particular disappointment, nothing more than a marshmallow shooter (i.e. blowgun) made from PVC pipe, not even vaguely cannon-like.So if you are just looking for medieval projects to build, skip this book and search out the many more interesting and detailed medieval projects available on-line.

We have yet to do any of the projects in this book but have just read the chapters. I was not expected so much information in a project book.

Not only do you get wonderful projects with this book, but it also gives a nice view of history during that time period with small bits of how things were in that period. It comes with step by step instructions as well as pictures, vocabulary for each chapter. We are enjoying this book during our Middle Ages Unit. We are also using this along side Project Middle Ages by Homeschool in the Woods, which you can find at (...).homeschoolinthewoods.com and Knights and Castles by Williamson publishing

Great food ideas to help the learners see what people ate

Fun book with directions so clear that my 9 & 11 year old can do most of the projects by themselves!I wasn't sure about this book when I read the reviews so I checked it out from the library. I bought it within days because I just knew it would be a book that racked up fines!

My first grader loves having me read about the projects in this book. There's also a lot of good background information. I read her a little section about common phrases and now I hear her using them in her play!

Went well with Year 2 TOG curriculum

Wonderful unit.

After reading Volume 1 of Charlotte Mason's Home Education series, I wanted something that really boiled down the nuts and bolts of a typical CM homeschool day. This definitely gets right to the meat of it with very little expansion on any of the subjects. I found it useful since I already had a background in understanding the philosophy of CM. Without that background knowledge, though, I think this would be incomplete. If you LOVE the idea of CM, but have trouble seeing how to format your day, this is a great next step. You'll still be searching a bit for resources and more information of how to function, but I see it as a focused look into the core of a CM homeschool day. It's a short and easy read, so I found it definitely worth my time and energy.

I devoured it the night it arrived. What I loved about this book is that it condensed the daunting six volumes of Charlotte Masons works into what I consider cliff notes. Here’s the bullet list of what you want to take away from the concepts. I now know that i want to invest in the six original works. But this book gave me enough insight to apply the techniques NOW, when I need it. I knew from reading other summary books by similar authors that I believed in the method. I’m now ready to delve into the intricacies while I’m working with our son THIS year. It was exactly what I hoped it would be, enough to get me started. I outlined concepts on nearly every other page. A quick and terrific read! One thing I also appreciate is that the author gave her own person opinions in a very gentle way. It made the book conversational and easy to read, much like discussing with a friend. I very much disagree with some of her perceptions, yet her sharing of those views on say... what she may want to censor in an art book, still added to the value of the writing. If only people could exhibit such grace on social media!I’ve just ordered her next book as well.

My wife & I will be homeschooling our kindergartener starting in two weeks. Faced with the enormity of the task, we have talked with many homeschooling parents and read much on the subject. We started with Cathy Duffy's 101 Top Picks and found ourselves gravitating toward classical & Charlotte Mason philosophies. We then purchased Susan Wise Bauer's "The Well-Trained Mind," and I was hugely impressed by the thorough information for each age level, subject, and even the general homeschooling advice.Next we bought Catherine Levison's "A Charlotte Mason Education." In a nutshell, the book is good but inconsistent. The book is a concise summary of Charlotte Mason's philosophy, consisting of twenty chapters but only seventy-eight pages (not including the appendix). The longer chapters, including "Literature," "Science," and "The Formation of Habit," feel well researched and insightful. Detailed descriptions of nature walks, sketchbooks, or how Mason encourages educators to use short lessons to keep absolute attention were very helpful. However several chapters were poorly researched and short to the point of containing almost no information. The chapters on "Morals," "Grammar," and "History" seemed especially lacking. In addition, I have two additional quibbles about the book. First, Levison lists many ideas & methods for homeschooling that she herself has no experience with. She's at her best when she's speaking directly from her experience as a homeschooling parent. Second, I don't feel that Levison has thoroughly addressed the advance of technology since Charlotte Mason's time. Cameras, recorded music, automobiles, televisions, telephones, movies, and video games have all become entwined in our daily life. What would Charlotte Mason think of these inventions? Is photography a worthy pursuit? While I doubt Charlotte Mason would approve of children idling in front of inferior television programming, what about the finest cinema? These topics are a missed opportunity.Levison did succeed in piquing my interest about Mason's philosophy. I have found that Mason's Original Homeschooling Series is available for free on Ambleside Online, and am currently reading through it. Ambleside even provides a "Reader's Digest" chapter-by-chapter summary of the Series for those starting out, which may be an ideal introduction.Update: Catherine Levison replied very graciously to this review below. She pointed out that this was meant to be the introductory quick-read, while "More Charlotte Mason Eduation" is a much more thorough treatment. I would not have known or even given More Charlotte Mason a look without that, so thank you!

This is a wonderful resource for anyone who chooses to educate their children using the CM method. Miss Mason had a great concept of educating children, and the schedules included help to show the ideas behind the thoughts of the Charlotte Mason method. Mrs. Levinson breaks down subjects and provides the basics (and a great list of books to use, since CM was generations ago, and also based out of Britain, most of the books she uses pertain to that side of the world) for those that are getting into this method and how to utilize it. But she also gives plenty of examples and ideas for the subjects, to help people start. Great resource to use with Ambleside Online information and other CM websites. Quick read, but very informative.

I love the practical advice that can be found in this book. I've always been a little afraid of the Charlotte Mason approach, but this book definitely makes me think I can actually do it AND succeed.

I've read every book on Charlotte Mason that I could find and this is the best (A More Charlotte Mason Education is excellent also). This book is extremely well organized, concisely written and very easy to understand. I appreciate that it gets right to the point since I don't have a lot of time to meander around looking for the answers. After reading this book I felt completely prepared to begin our homeschool experience. The other books I'd read only made me think that I needed to read more because I didn't 'have the answers yet.' The organization of this book makes it easy to quickly look up any subject you have a question on and find the answer immediately. What a blessing!I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn more about Charlotte Mason or wanting to know how to implement her teachings in your school. It is also an excellent read for husbands, families and friends who may not fully understand the CM method. You'll want a copy on your shelf to review again and again.

Battling the Inland Sea: Floods, Public Policy, and the Sacramento Valley

From the Inside Flap

"Of late historians have become increasingly interested in the vast re-ordering of the environment involved in the creation of America. Nowhere was this more true than in the Sacramento Valley where re-ordering edged into folly. Battling the Inland Sea is a powerful evocation of the losses and gains involved in battling the mighty Sacramento River. But more than this, it is an exploration of the national will as it sought to rearrange nature herself with such mixed results. Here is history dealing with the most elemental forces of land, water and engineering as they are shaped by public policy. Here is the profound drama of value and symbol which occurs when Americans come into conflict with forces over which they can exercise, as Robert Kelley shows, only the most transitory and pyrrhic victories."―Kevin Starr, author of the Americans and the California Dream"Robert Kelley's research into the origins of California's first great flood control system has already helped to inform the shaping of the state's water laws. Now he opens up the benefits of that work for the average reader in a wonderfully clear and engaging story that manages, among other things, to show that water development in the United States hasn't been just a matter of engineering but a cultural and intellectual achievement as well."―William Kahrl, author of Water and Power"A vividly written narrative of one of the major transformations of the physical world we inhabit. Robert Kelley draws upon his rich store of learning and insight to set the struggles over the Sacramento Valley into a broad context. His book contains important lessons for those who would understand the American economy, environment, politics, or culture."―Daniel W. Howe, author of The Political Culture of the American Whigs

As a field biologist working throughout the west, I've been following freshwater "issues" for over a decade. As a resident in the desert region of southern California for the last 6 years, the issue has come to deeply affect me professionally and personally. A friend suggested this book as we got to discussing the California history of the legal (and not -so-legal) rights, distribution, and battles with nature and each other all in the name of fresh water. This has got to be one of, if not THE most comprehensive (to the point nearing exhaustive) thesis on the subject. I'm not as avid a reader as I used to be but still ritually read about an hour before bed. The level of detail in this read can be like taking an Ambien so if you're a bedtime reader like me, this will cure your insomnia. The downside? It may take me two years to get through it but the knowledge gained is worth it.

This is a truly excellent book; who would have thought that flood control could be a compelling topic? Any Californian, or anyone else affected by water supply issues, should read it. The author traces California's flood control problems all the way back to hydraulic gold mining, and manages to mix history, politics (some very surprising twists of party philosophies) and technical information in a very readable way.

Was doing a levee assessment in the Sacramento area for work, good insight. They should have selected a higher and drier location for the capitol city....

Very good look at how the politics in CA and the country shaped the different approaches to combatting flood and irrigation issues in the Sacramento Valley. The positions of the Democrats and the Whig-Republicans regarding the role of government then are totally reversed today.

I love learning about California's water struggle (history). The book is well written too! Highly recommended and hard to find in bookstores (I've looked hard in the city).

This book clarifies man's failure to accept what the Natural Environment offers and man's limited knowledge of his ability to live with nature. Man's ineptness is exemplified by politics dictating his actions.

As an hydrologist, a Sacramento Valley resident, and an historically curious guy who likes seeing dots connect, this book was a triple threat. Kelley expresses from the outset a desire to trace the history of Sacramento Valley flood control along the broader lines of American and Californian political cultures, and this feature combines with his adept storytelling to make the book both informative and interesting. Even if you don't live in California or have no interest in flood control, but you've wondered about the history of Democrats, Whigs, and Republicans and their respective visions for America, this book will take you a long way. (Of course, there are other books more directly addressing that issue. You can find them in Kelley's footnotes.)

I was deeply influenced by Kelley's early works on hydraulic mining in the 1950s (his book Gold vs. Grain and his papers such as the Forgotten Giant: ...Hydraulic Mining...). I also heard strong praise for this book from many water professionals in the Sacramento Valley. As I eagerly read this book, therefore, I expected more of the same: a study of the massive impact that hydraulic mining sedimentation had on California rivers, flooding, and politics in the late nineteenth century. Fortunately - I was surprised to learn - Battling the Inland Sea (BIS) goes well beyond the physical and political effects of historical sedimentation in several important ways. This book is much broader in its geographic extent and substantive scope than Kelley's earlier works. Geographically, mining sediment primarily impacted the lowermost Sacramento River (below Fremont Weir) and its Sierra Nevada tributaries (especially the Feather, Yuba, Bear, and American Rivers). BIS is more broadly concerned with flood control in the Sacramento Valley up into and beyond the extensive Colusa and Butte Basins which had relatively little impact from mining sediment. Moreover, the emphasis of the discussion in BIS is on the history of flood control efforts in the Valley and the surrounding political culture of flood control. Although these topics are inseparable from the mining sediment issue in some areas, it is a much broader topic involving a set of deeper issues. In fact, Kelley makes it clear from the outset that the Sacramento Valley was prone to extensive flooding and that the natural river channel was incapable of conveying but a small fraction of the flow during large floods; long before mining sediment arrived. This emphasis is key to understanding the importance of BIS to educating both professional river managers and the lay public to the actual flood risks in the Valley. The long history of flood control in the Sacramento Valley represents a fight against nature. Mining sedimentation is a complication that exacerbates an already intractable flood-prone situation, but it is not the primary cause of flood risk. Extensive low-lying basins are the inherent cause for concern. The common ground between BIS and Kelley's earlier work is that he, again, presents an inspired historical overview of the political culture underlying California water politics. The complex developments of the period are put into a context of shifting ideologies of resource management, perception of nature, and the vagaries of politics and economics. I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in these broader topics. It is, of course, a must-read for students of California flood-management history. This is a fantastic translation and a wonderful book to add to your collection of philosophy/Eastern thought books. To borrow some Alan Watts speak, these volumes are really more about a path of liberation than a true philosophy or religion. It's incredibly difficult for a western born and raised person to truly grasp what that means, but these texts help. I believe David Hinton understands this intuitively, and while he's taken some incredible artistic license with the texts compared to a simple translation or transliteration, his prose is much more readable and puts the concepts in a better light. You can typically find the Tao Te Ching, Confucius and Chuang Tzu readily available for a few bucks, but it's harder to find a cheap copy of Mencius, and for that alone this book is well worth the price. The print quality is also fantastic. Many of the extant books by these authors were printed decades ago and the quality of the text on the pages is subpar. You won't get a headache reading this book.

It is so Rare to find a translator who not only is conversant in Chinese ...but has realised ( enlightenment ? ) the concepts internally. And who is a Poet in his own right.

Deeply insightful examination of these mammoth cultural foundations. I found my understanding often changed & sometimes reversed with these translations.

Hinton's translations are always excellent, whether he is translating poetry or philosophy; and that is due to the fact that he has somehow inhabited the minds of these ancient Chinese writers. This comes across powerfully in the introductory material to each work. If, like me, you appreciate his exposition as much as his translation, then I strongly suggest that you also read his books Existence and Hunger Mountain. You will be rewarded with more than a glimpse into the the way these ancient writers viewed themselves and the world.

please don't drop and bend books and then ship them pretending that they are in good shape. its not worth my bother to return it.

Very good!

I'm at the feet of Hinton learning more from this true academic sage than I imagined possible. He opens the mindspace of Chinese philosophical life thought effortlessly. If you're on the path, this book of modern translations points out "Way."

This book is an excellent combination of the important Chinese Classics in a translation with comments and references and key terms. With all of this in one place, it is possible to incorporate that state of mind/heart behind the documents presented. I recommend this for all who want to know Chinese thinking.

This covers a lot of the same ground as books such as "The Lights in the Tunnel" but in a more pop-academic style: the prose is all very accessible but the information is extensively footnoted and attributed, and there are numerous references to the work of other academics, mostly but not exclusively economists. For anyone who wonders why we're seeing record-high income inequality and jobless recoveries from recessions, this book will clear up a lot of mysteries. As someone in the technology field myself, I found little to disagree with in the book's treatment of recent and upcoming technological advances, which occupies the first several chapters; the authors have done their homework and have visited enough research labs and company R&D departments to have a very realistic picture of what's just over the horizon. There'll be nothing earth-shattering here for readers who follow technology trends or even who read WIRED magazine, but the book looks at all these things through a somewhat different lens (its impact on human work) than the tech press usually does, and I didn't find myself skimming even when they were covering developments with which I'm already very familiar. For me, the best stretch of the book was chapters 7 through 11, when the focus moves to the effects of recent technological advances on the economy and on the study of economics itself. The authors build a compelling case that income inequality is much more a consequence of the move to a digital economy than of any particular government policy. I found their take on globalization especially interesting: they view it as a big contributor to the rise in income of the world's top earners, but not for the reasons people usually think. I already tended toward this view, but now I'm further convinced that some of the changes we've seen in wealth distribution are primarily due to deep structural changes in the way the world works and won't be undone by tax policy.I found the book less convincing in its final chapters, where the authors suggest steps that can be taken to avert widespread unemployment and social disorder. Their short-term prescriptions are sensible enough (basically: take steps to encourage general economic growth) but, as the authors themselves point out, these won't address the underlying problem, identified by Keynes among others, of technological change outpacing the ability of large segments of the workforce to retrain for new jobs. They offer a few examples of systems that make it easier to find occasional part-time work and suggest that these could be expanded in the future, but as far as I can tell their vision would still leave people mostly idle. They are optimistic about the ability of people to continue finding work but I didn't feel it was justified by the picture their text painted.Still, this is about the best treatment I've found of the question of how technology is likely to affect work over the next couple decades. Highly recommended.

For about 8,000 years, humanity developed very gradually. The number of people on the planet was largely unchanged at less than half a billion. The tools people used to survive changed little. Life was, to quote Thomas Hobbes' Leviathan, “poor, nasty, brutish, and short.”Towards the last quarter of the 17th century, there was profound change. The population of the world grew exponentially, making the graph of demographics look suddenly right angled, as it grew from a half to seven billion. The cause of this change began with the Scottish inventor and engineer, James Watt and his refinement of the steam engine. This allowed people to achieve more than their limited muscle power was capable of, and to generate enormous quantities of energy that could be harnessed. The result was factories and mass production, railways and mass transportation, and more. This led to life, as we know it.This remarkable achievement started to change everything. How we work, who works, where we live, how we live. How much we earn and how we earn, how many people live on the planet and where they live. This book, The Second Machine Age, shows how we are changing the world in ways more profound that what has taken place from the 18th century until now. Everything you do is changing. How you do it, ischanging. The implications are exciting, the possibilities are motivating, and some implications are nothing short of worrying. The thrust behind the “second machine age” is the computer, dubbed by Time Magazine in 1982, as the machine of the year. However, it was not the computer that did it, but what has been achieved after the computer. One hundred years ago, a computer was an employee’s job title, only much later replaced by a machine. What the steam engine and its like did for muscle power, the digital advances resulting from the computer are doing for mental power. This mental power will be no less important for humanity than the physical power of the steam engine. This book covers three broad conclusions regarding the implications of this mental power. The first conclusion is that computer hardware, software, and networks are building blocks for digital technologies that will be “as important and transformational to society and the economy as the steam engine.”Levy and Murnane, in their 2004 book, “The New Division of Labor,” identified the tasks that cannot be computerized and that will remain in the domain of human work. Into this category was driving, which has no fix pattern and so was best left to humans. In 2012, the authors drove in a Chauffeur, Google’s driverless car and part ofa fleet of cars that has travelled hundreds of thousands of miles without anyone driving. In all this time it has had only two accidents, one caused by a human-driven car that drove into a Chauffeur at a red traffic light, and one when a Chauffeur was driven by a person. This is only one example of many where a computer with sophisticated software outperformed a person. Similar, previously human tasks are performed by advanced internet communications technology. Into this category fits factory work previously the province of people. There still remains much work that has not been computerised, (let me not say cannot be!) such as the work of “entrepreneurs, CEOs, scientists, nurses, restaurant busboys, or many other types of workers.”“Self-driving cars went from being the stuff of science fiction to on-the-road reality in a few short years,” explains the authors, Brynjolfsson and McAfee. The second conclusion of digital technology is that its consequences will be profoundly beneficial.IBM and their partners, who include Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and the Cleveland Clinic, are building “Dr. Watson,” a computer with Artificial Intelligence that will assist doctors to make better diagnoses. A doctor would need read 160 hours every week simply keep up with the latest medical information relevant to his field. Dr. Watson can be fed all this information in a much shorter time and can help thousands of doctors in multiple geographies. The third conclusion of the book is of concern. While a Roomba (self-administered vacuum cleaner,) can clean a room, it cannot sort out the magazines on the coffee table. The role for housekeepers is secure. However, when work can be performed more efficiently and cheaper by robots than by people, there will be less need for some kinds of workers. Many jobs, even very high levels ones that rely on sophisticated thinking patterns will be able to be performed by computers with sophisticated software. The resulting era will require employees with special skills and the right education capable of using technology to create value. The corollary of this is that there has never been a worse time to have skills that are capable of being replaced by a computer. This particular cause of concern will probably be mitigated in the long term. The first machine age created child labour and the air pollution associated with the steam engine. Child labour no longer exists in the UK, and London air is cleaner now than at any time since the late 1500s.This fascinating book, filled with insight, examples and challenges, is essential reading for everyone. It both exhilarates with potential and warns. This is the most important book I read this year.Readability Light ---+- SeriousInsights High +---- LowPractical High ---+- Low*Ian Mann of Gateways consults internationally on leadership and strategy and is the author of Strategy that Works.

Bought this book for our first grandchild who is going to be a boyIt will be read to him by our younger son who is his father.Excellent story that can grow with little Will and be read over and over again I'm sure.

I love this book! I always share this with my students. It showcases an entire family that teaches the importance of reading beginning as a baby.

Great book with a great heart. I heard Michael Shoulders several years ago in person. What an engaging gentleman. I recommend ANY of his books! Thank you!

Perfect! Thank you!

This is a great book to give at a baby shower.Love the illustrations and the story is funny.

Such a fun book for the reading family with little ones! When the new bear comes home everyone reads to him. They also try to get the baby bear to say their name first! "Say Daddy" prompts Daddy bear. "Say Mommy" instructs Mommy bear. Even Auntie bear gets in on the game. But baby bear surprises everyone when he first word is not a relatives name, but the word "Book!"Because of the repetitive nature of the story, my 7-year old who is still struggling with reading was able to read the story to us with very few prompts for unknown words. This is a perfect night time story, or story to carry with you to appointments for reading while you're waiting.Disclosure: Reviewed for Arms of a Sister Reviews.

Michael Shoulder's has once again written a book that is a hit with parents and children alike. I was extremely fortunate to have him visit our school, and talk to our children. He is one of the most gifted speakers. Our children hung on his every word. When I told them he had this new book out they couldn't wait for me to get it. Reading is truly magic to Michael Shoulders and this book just enforces this. If Michael Shoulder's has written it - you can just count on it being worth buying AND reading. Once again he has come through with a book that encourages reading and a story that young and old can enjoy. (This is a perfect gift to give for new parents or grandparents!)

I also had the opportunity to meet Michael Shoulders at a Literacy Compass Conference in Tampa, FL. I was highly amused by him. He's a wonderful speaker, author, and DANCER! Yes,,, he rapped one of his "songs" to us... "I say Tenne, you say C...Tennesse, I say Flora...you say DA... Florida." He's hysterical! He's from Clarksville, he shows you that on the map. His son was on Survivor, his wife writes a weekly column in the Clarksville newspaper on Literacy....He read to us Say Daddy! and it had a beautiful message attached. He said this actually happened to a family and thought it would be a great story to write. He comes highly recommended!!!!
