About the Author

William Shakespeare was born in April 1564 in the town of Stratford-upon-Avon, on England’s Avon River. When he was eighteen, he married Anne Hathaway. The couple had three children—an older daughter Susanna and twins, Judith and Hamnet. Hamnet, Shakespeare’s only son, died in childhood. The bulk of Shakespeare’s working life was spent in the theater world of London, where he established himself professionally by the early 1590s. I am a college adjunct faculty English teacher and I wanted a simple edition with notes for my class to read in the fall. I was going to order 20 of these for the class, but I am so glad I first bought one for myself. The paper edition doesn't have any spaces between the speakers, either, so it is difficult to read, even if it were written in language my students, mostly college freshmen, could easily understand. They would give up on this edition. Also, there are absolutely NO NOTES for students that define and explain some of the more obscure vocabulary and written expressions. The text underneath this edition on Amazon did NOT say that there were no notes. It is not helpful AT ALL for a new reader of Shakespeare or a reader who only read it in high school unwillingly. I am going to order something else for my class.

I purchased this to fill in for copies my students had lost last year. The size of the bool lead me to believe that the print size might be a bit easier on the eye. I could not have been more wrong.Although the pages are large 6x7, the print is minuscule--about 7-point font. That's not the worst. THERE ARE NO LINE NUMBERS OR DEMARCATIONS FOR ACT OR SCENE....Just page after page of tiny font dialogue that begins on page 2, and ends on page 71.

Lately, I've been watching various televised versions of Hamlet, King Lear, Macbeth, and Richard III to avoid yet-another-detective murder mystery. All was well until I recently turned my attention to viewing some of Shakespeare's "comedies," most of which I have seen in the past, minus "As You Like It" which was more pastoral than comedic, and though it had the talent of of a young Helen Mirren, I found the plot was so contrived that the play struck me as stupid. I am not alone, apparently, as I found a review by Peter Beech in The Guardian entitled "Much Ado About Nothing Much" who also thinks less of Shakespeare than we thought we should. He was pioneering, yes indeed, and I am grateful for some truly shimmering lines. Nevertheless, to me, this play is seemingly pointless.

This seems to essentially be Shakespeare's response to The Jew of Malta, so if you've read that, this will seem very familiar to you. However, the language used is far more memorable, the lead character more sympathetic, and the story shaped to fit a different genre. This means that it ends on a far less tragic note, and also that it secures its place in history as one of Shakespeare's masterpieces. Essentially, it is a story of failed revenge, love, and injustice. As to the edition itself, I found it to be greatly helpful in understanding the action in the play. It has a layout which places each page of the play opposite a page of notes, definitions, explanations, and other things needed to understand that page more thoroughly. While I didn't always need it, I was certainly glad to have it whenever I ran into a turn of language that was unfamiliar, and I definitely appreciated the scene-by-scene summaries. Really, if you want to or need to read Shakespeare, an edition such as this is really the way to go, especially until you get more accustomed to it.

I like the way this book gives both versions of the play. It makes it easier to understand Shakespeare. Currently I am taking an English literature class and it has helped me tremendously. I read the plain English side first and then went back and read the Shakespeare version and I was able to understand it better. Some of the Shakespeare gets lost when put into plain English but it’s easy to pick up the meaning after reading both versions.

The plot involves a lot of people disguising themselves as the opposite gender but in the end everyone ends up with the one they really love. In that sense it's like a light romantic comedy but it also includes a lot of the great writing that Shakespeare is known for, including many of his most famous lines, such as the "all the world's a stage" monologue, and I hadn't realized this is the play the phrase "motley fool" came from. If you like Shakespeare, this is a must read, and it's entertaining as just a fun play.This kindle version is well formatted, though no footnotes or line numbers.

I bought this product as a material for a college course, and when we got to studying it, I quickly realized the copy worse than anything I've seen in print. Not only are there no page numbers, but EVERY SINGLE PAGE is missing multiple lines from the script. No, I'm not exaggerating. There are other issues with the presentation of the dialogues and stage directions as well, but those weren't as disruptive as the major errors with this copy. So, if you just want a cover to display to feign studying Shakespeare, go for it, but honestly you could probably find a better fake for less. If you actually want to study the play and know what happens, buy anywhere else. This is not "As [I] Like It."

I bought this book because I was fascinated with the different Totem Poles I found in Washington State (although none of these are in this book). What the book does have is some very interesting information and photos. Lots of old B&W photos as well as images and information on newer poles, plus maps on where the poles are located.

Discussing colonial relations as manifest in the history and form of totem poles.Wish there were more of the older poles, and less of the very recent ones.

It is exciting to read such astonishing facts about totem poles from a hundred or more years ago. Mysteries are put to rest about many artistic creations, and the totems that were surprisingly replaced by copies. This book uniquely displays helpful maps of the locations from Seattle to Juneau. The design of the book is pleasing and convenient to any traveler up the Northwest coast. I particularly enjoyed the historical and cultural aspects, learning about those who have done the magnificent carvings. This is an amazingly well done book making it a very enjoyable read.

I'm glad that Kotlin is rising in popularity, especially with it's use for Android development. This book does a good job of introducing the Kotlin programming language as it takes you through the course of developing an Android app. If you're an Android developer and you want to start developing with Kotlin, this book is not a bad place to start (since it's only one of very few Android/Kotlin tutorials available at the time of this writing). However, this book seemed like it was rushed to be published because it felt quite unorganized throughout. It seems like the author didn't care to explain a lot of what is being shown in the book in order to make it easier for himself. I really think this book will get better in the next few editions down the line.

There's a distinct shortage of good reference material on Kotlin, and I would have to include this unfinished little manual. There are so many profound grammatical errors (to be found on just about EVERY page) that it's truly difficult to take this book seriously. The content lacks organization and is extremely brief, in many areas, simply regurgitating the same one line explanations that can be found in the online documentation.

Highly recommended for Kotlin beginners with some knowledge of Java and Android Studio. I follow the book as well as the free digital edition sent by Antonio (with updated texts), so far so good, and the examples worked! The book project is the same "Weather Project" in Google Java Android Studio Development course, which was much 'painful' compared to this Kotlin version.Only regret is it is still much OO style, little Functional programming except (Chap13) Lambda Expression, none on Monadic style with Kotlin.

I was drawn to this play after watching “Shakespeare in Love.” Early in the movie lines are recited from the play that are quite entrancing: “What is light, if Silvia be not seen? // What is joy, if Silvia be not by? // Unless it be to think that she is by // And feed upon the shadow of perfection. // Except I be by Silvia in the night, // There is no music in the nightingale; // Unless I look upon Silvia in the day, // There is no day for me to look upon.” Alas, these words from Act III, and the song in Act IV, (“Who is Silvia? What is she, // That all our swains commend her?”) are the highlights of a play that most critics place at or near the bottom of the Shakespeare canon. The play is a comedy and therefore a love story, but the focus is on the friendship of two men--two buddies as it were--as in the plot of a Paul Newman/Robert Redford movie. Also, the heroine is not Silvia but Julia.The buddies are “The Two Gentlemen of Verona”—Proteus and Valentine. Proteus loves Julia and she loves him, while Valentine is destined to fall in love with Silvia. This being a comedy, Proteus falls for Silvia too, and Julia must disguise herself as a boy to win him back. If you’re familiar with Shakespeare’s comedies, girls disguised as boys is often part of the plot, but it was with this play where cross-dressing began. Valentine goes to Milan to be “tutor’d in the world.” Soon after, Proteus follows to meet up with him in the court of Milan. There, Proteus forgets about his love for Julia and falls head-over-heels in love with Valentine’s girl Silvia, and to entice her affections proceeds to disparage his best friend. Nice guy, huh? This betrayal leads to Valentine’s exile from the court. Determined to win him back, Julia dresses as a boy and sets off to find him. The plucky and fetching Julia; the wit of Launce, the clown, and his dog Crab can’t save the plot’s absurd and implausible twist wherein Valentine offers the love of his life (Silvia) to Proteus, just after Proteus was about to rape her. How’s that for friendship? And how’s that for love? Valentine doesn’t bother to ask Silvia how she feels about being offered up to his friend as so much chattel, never mind that she would have been raped had not Valentine and Julia arrived in the nick of time. As you might expect, “Two Gentlemen of Verona” is among the bard’s “problem comedies,” and is not performed all that often. In the introduction to the Pelican Shakespeare, Mary Beth Rose of the University of Illinois at Chicago sums up the play with: “In the ‘shallow story of deep love’ (I.I. 21), about which Valentine taunts Proteus at the beginning of ‘The Two Gentlemen of Verona,’ the actual ‘deep love’ is that between male friends.” Indeed. She also cites the plays “exquisite lyricism” as the play’s saving grace.

The item description has now been fixed. When I bought it it said that there was a copy of the original text and on opposite pages the modern translation. However, when I got it it was the original text, but you could click on the text to get the translation. When it worked it was awkward and annoying. However, it often didn't work and the translation would be messed up (gibberish) or would be for the wrong verse. I ordered it about 10 months ago. I wonder if so many good reviews are from the print version or if the issues have been fixed. Hope you have better luck.

With the shipwrecked party scattered around the island, Prospero shifts his focus from task to task, using his magic to change people's hearts and minds."The Tempest" is a complicated drama, but this graphic novel delivers the story in an understandable and entertaining way, including the author's essential point that change and not revenge is Prospero's ultimate objective; recommended.

I really can't speak highly enough of this version of The Tempest. The notes on the text, the layout, and the modern typeface combined with First Folio spelling and punctuation make this the most actable version of a Shakespeare play that I've seen. They've even laid it out so that each page of text is faced with a blank page, perfect for writing blocking, text, and direction notes. The only small gripe I have, and it is a minute one, is that the binding could be sturdier - the cover of mine is busily in the process of falling off, and we're not halfway through the rehearsal process yet. But even given that, I would rate this 6 stars if I could. In the future, I will be using the Applause First Folio versions of any Shakespeare plays where the definitive text is FF.

I just finished "When Your Child is Bullied," and it's the best resource I've read to date on the subject. I began reading the bullying literature while writing my middle-grade, bully-drama novel "A Warrior's Soul," and I was surprised at how little was available. What was available was extraordinarily simplisistic and shallow. This book takes a no holds barred approach, and it's emphasis on early, direct, and forceful intervention *with consequences* for the bully makes it a must read. My only quibble-and it is a quibble-is that they don't address self-defense for our kids. So much bullying happens outside the view of adults and teachers. To their credit, they recognize, briefly and with too much political correctness in my view, that kids sometimes have no choice but to fight back...and it's effective. Still, their emphasis on adult intervention and holding adults accountable for bad behavior is long overdue and a refreshing perspective in this important debate. Well done. Highly recommended by this parent and author.

Finally a book that gets to the point and says it like it is. Bullying is a problem in every school and at every level of our society and these moms discussed it openly from the heart. Yes, kids will be kids but bullies will be bullies!! There is a difference. My daughter has been being bullied all through her grade school years. I gave a copy to her teacher and I am tempted to leave one on the doorstep of the kid who has been bullying her. Parents need to face the facts on both ends. Even the parents of the kids who are doing the bullying. There is a solution! Hats off to these moms for having the courage to write this book!

Bought this as my husband's insistence to have on hand for any mechanic questions we could potentially deal with. My husband has used the Haynes Repair Manual that goes with his Chevy truck many times over, and encouraged me to get this one for my Hyundai. It is extremely detailed and informative- I'm glad to have it as a reference and would recommend it to others as well!

Good book but a few things are missing, for instance I wanted to see the replacement of the cabin air filter and it wasn't in the book. I also don't like the fact that the year range is so broad. The car in the picture looks nothing like my car.

Good for a more experience car person. Because it tried to cover so many model years of the Hyundai Elantra, the photos (which are already a little hard to use because they are in black and white) can be of limited usefulness because the models tend to be different. The maintenance schedule is also a bit on the conservative side.

Can't beat Haynes manuals. I purchase one for each vehicle I have. YouTube is great, but sometimes you don't want grease all over your tablet. This is always within arm's reach when I'm under my car.

The images are black and white and resolution a bit low for readability. Other than that a great manual briefly covering almost every part of a car. Some basic car repair knowledge helps.

I'm kinda disappointed. Haynes manuals are generally pretty good, and this one covered my '07 Elantra, but the first thing I needed the manual for (speed sensor), it said was too complicated for this manual! So back to Google I go, lol.
