This is not an autobiography in the true sense of the word. It is not even an autobiography as told to, such as the Autobiography of Malcolm X. Apparently this writer was commissioned by MLK's family to write an account of his life, based on his writings and their remembrances. The author imagines conversations that Dr. King might have, and supports that with snippets of his writing. Maybe that's okay for some, but I say this is a biography, mostly of his adult activist life, and it contains none of the critical analysis that's in David Garrow's Bearing the Cross. This "autobiography" left me hungry for the real story. The one highlight for me was reading Dr. King's Letter from a Birmingham Jail. Other than that, I could have made better use of my time. But that's just me. Buy it if you want to read an outline of his life.

Phillips has written a few leadership books - and does a masterful job in each - yet especially here. For this book, he weaves through with a leadership lesson in each chapter - and generally places the lesson tied directly to something King did - trying to stay close to chronological order. He also supplies us with key quotes from King at the beginning and end of each chapter - for a quick summary and overview.Phillips sets the context in which King operated. This is huge! I don't believe you can't fully understand without immersing in the history, the mindset, the goings on of the time. Phillips doesn't assume the reader is familiar with King. He doesn't assume the reader knows the circumstances of King's time. Phillips pulls the reader in; explaining the leadership trait King embodied; he explains what in King's past helped him to get here. He explains the historical context of what the culture was like, what current events caused the situation, what players were involved and a little on their mindset and background. He points out how even a great man like King made mistakes, how we evaluated his successes and failures, and how he grew and improved throughout.King's life was short and was lived mainly before I was born - he died at age 39 - and had learned more and accomplished more than many that lived to be twice his age. Being a student of leadership, but someone who knew very little about King, I chose this book to learn about both. It inspired me to read more about King. I am amazed at how he put his principles before even fear of criticism, family threats, and even death. I think the reader will learn a lot about King, his struggles, his faith, his life, his goals, and especially his leadership style. Yet, for burgeoning leaders, it is very insightful. It will make someone think about whether they truly want to be a leader and what sacrifices they are willing to make.Phillips makes this an easy read - but not an easy one to just race through without reflection.

It was unfortunate that Martin Luther King Jr. did not get a chance to write his own autobiography, but Clayborne Carson does a wonderful job piecing together Martin's life struggles, highlights and main ideas. Martin's honesty and quest for justice rings throughout. There were a few sections that were duplicative, but overall I thought it was an excellent, absorbing read. To me, the book really delivered toward the end. Discussions on the concepts of power and love and nonviolence and violence were exceptional. I also really appreciated Martin's digging down to the root cause of black thought in relation to America - why, for example, many young black people leaned toward violence as a method to gain freedom and respect. Finally, there were a number of passages that could have been written today - so many points Martin made are as fresh as ever. Martin's revelations are timeless. Everyone who wants to understand America should read this book.

I bought this book for a number of reasons. Firstly, I knew precious little about the man who stands as a giant of history. I also knew little about the kind of Christianity he professed, and had heard some people scandalously say that King was in no real way a Christian (i.e. Christopher Hitchens). All I can say after reading this book is WOW - what an amazing story. I heard King's voice speaking every word of every chapter. It was like he was sitting next to you telling you the story of his life.King was most certainly a Christian. He grew up in a Christian home, he went to Seminary, he became a minister and pastored a Church. He spoke of a personal relationship with Jesus. He depended on God for strength during difficult times, he prayed to Jesus, he worshiped Jesus, he preached about Jesus, and led a congregation of Jesus followers. If that's not Christian nothing is. Yet his theology was decidedly liberal. He was embarrassed by his fundamentalist upbringing, especially those who would check their minds in at the door of Church and stomp their feet during the service. He spoke candidly about denying the bodily resurrection of Jesus, and embracing the liberal view of man. However he was an honest man, who at times questioned his presuppositions. I was impressed how he preached a Gospel that led to action in the present world. Not just a gospel of Sunday pieties. In story after story King recounted how he was committed to nonviolence because this was the way of Jesus (and Gandhi whom he was later influenced by). He didn't preach hatred of white people, but reconciliation, with an aim to a fully integrated society. If anyone had reason to hate it was King. His home was bombed, his friends homes were bombed, he and his family were verbally abused and threatened, he was stabbed, he was arrested more times than I can count, and was often the victim of gross injustice. Yet in all that he showed the world that he served another Lord, and preached a different Gospel. Violence, only begets more violence. My heart broke for those who suffered during the era of segregation. At times I was almost reduced to tears, reading about the horrors of what mankind has done to each other. Not only that but I finally came to understand a little of what it was like to grow up as a Black Man in a climate of racism, to suffer under such terrible injustice, disrespect and disenfranchisement. Blessed are the peacemakers like Dr King, for they will be called the children of God.Yet there were times I felt that King's liberalism got the better of him. I felt that King's idea of heaven on earth was simply an integrated society where everyone had equal opportunity to all state services, good jobs, and so on. Yet this idea doesn't go far enough. What about personal repentance and transformation through the power of the Holy Spirit? Can non-violent action really bring this about? Does it treat the symptoms rather than the root cause of the issue? What God's kingdom coming to earth, and us anticipating it in the present, but recognizing it is a future reality? He condemned violent protest, and distanced himself from people like Malcolm X but didn't call on those who had been violent to repent and follow Jesus. Many times he simply rationalized their violence as the understandable reaction of those who had suffered for too long. He often saw the suffering of the negro community as redemptive. But that is to give the community too much power, and a job that only Jesus can truly accomplish. If King meant that through their suffering and weakness, they embodied Jesus' suffering, and pointed people more fully towards Christ, then I have no issues. King's views on poverty and military action were a little naive. Giving away surplus food from the western world to store it in the empty bellies of hungry Indian Children, is a noble thought, but nothing more than a short term solution to a systemic problem. Giving away food like that can drive down the prices of local produce and cause more harm for the local economy than good.Yet those quibbles aside, this is still a fantastic book. Towards the end it gets a little dry and repetitive, but is very readable. If you only read one book on the Civil rights movement and it's pivotal leader, read this one.

Dover does printed and CD based clip art like no body else I know. I purchased this book/CD combo to do a project and then passed it along to a friend who does graphics for a living and he loved it. Easy to use and with lots of genuine heraldic designs, this one is a great value for anyone who finds themselves in need of quick path to great looking digital heraldry.

Very valuable resource.

the cd has small low res pictures

This has been a handy book to have around if you are working on heraldry shields or images. Lots of detail.

If you're looking for a selection of copyright-free clip art images to use for websites, posters, flyers, or other projects, this is a nice collection. All the images are done in a stencil motif, and encompass a variety of subjects, including floral designs, animals, southwestern and Native American patterns, Oriental designs, Egyptian designs, Celtic designs and knotwork, Christmas and other holidays, fruits and vegetables, maritime images, fairy tale characters, and carousel horses. There are 902 black-and-white images in total, useable with either Windows or Macintosh. The graphics are all quite large on the CD-ROM, so you can re-size them in any graphics program to whatever dimensions you need. They are all available in GIF, JPG, BMP, PICT, TIF, and WMF formats, saved at 600 DPI. The book itself contains a preview of every image, each accompanied by the image number, so you can easily find the one you want on the CD-ROM. The CD fits into a plastic sleeve on the inside back cover of the book for safekeeping. I have used clip art from this and other Dover Clip Art books on numerous occasions, and have been quite happy with it.

I can't believe how POOR the actual scans of the artwork are. The images on the printed page are of fine quality. The electronic version is nigh unto useless. I won't be buying from Dover again.

I love the black and white images. My baby smiles when we read this book together, and stares intently at each picture. Most of the black and white books on Amazon are about 10 pages long. For about the same amount of money, this book is loaded with 48 pages. The 21 different rhymes makes the book feel fresh each time, as I will sometimes read 5 or 6 rhymes at a time. The rhymes are classics, and bring back memories from my childhood. I especially like that I can sing every nursery rhyme. My three year old also loves this book, and insists that we sing “I’ve been working on the railroad” over and over again (he’s obsessed with trains). I am so happy that I stumbled across this book.

I bought this for my newborn grandson. It’s full of nursery rhymes, many of which I used to sing to my son when he was a baby. When my daughter in law told me that baby’s can only see in black and white, I was on the hunt. I bought two book, a shorter one with about 16 pages, and this one with 48 pages. The other book has one or two simple words paired with black and white pictures. This book is much more engaging, as it has a bunch of rhymes that can all be sung. Although I can’t hold a tune for the life of me, my grandson doesn’t seem to mind. We’ll have many fun rocky-a-by hours with this book.

Love the book and I love that it’s black and white, but I have a hard time reading books when there are spelling errors.

My 2 yr old and 2 month old love this book. The black and white are great for eye development in infants and my 2 yr old loves singing along. Gave it a 4/5 because some of the songs are unfamiliar and not typical little kid songs. Could think of others that were missed in place of those .

Cute book. Love the look and the short story. My 3 year old and I have read it and he enjoys it. He likes the pictures. So I can’t wait to ready/ show this to my newborn, when he arrives.

Babies see in black and white. Great book for baby to stare at.

My baby loves to sing along with me and this book. I love the contrast of the pages as it really grabs his attention. It’s been our nightly read since we’ve had it.

My baby boy loves this book! The black and white pictures captivate him and the size of the book draws him in. Price is also right. One of our favs in his library collection!

The Red Sash, by Jean E. Pendziwol

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-5–An interesting account of the Canadian fur trade in the early years of the 19th century as seen through the eyes of a Métis boy. The youngster lives with his family just outside Fort William, which was the major trading post linking the fur trade of northern and central Canada to the North West Company's main headquarters in Montreal. Voyageurs, easily identified by the red sash they wore, were the men who worked in the fur trade, traveling along the trade routes by canoe. The boy, who longs to be a voyageur like his father, describes his family's life and the role that Fort William played in the opening of the Canadian interior. Historically accurate, this story is full of interesting details that add to its authenticity. Sharp-eyed readers may also catch the native name for Lake Superior, Gitchee Gumee. A brief history of Fort William and the North West Company is appended. The map on the inside cover provides geographic context and the beautiful gouache and mixed-media illustrations work well to support the text. A fine addition to historical picture-book collections, particularly in Canada.–Robyn Walker, Elgin Court Public School, St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist

Gr. 1-3. Through the upbeat, first-person narrative of a Metis ("mixed-blood") boy, this picture book tells the early-nineteenth-century history of the busy Fort William trading post at the head of the Great Lakes, where Native peoples traded furs with the representatives from the North West Company, which brought supplies from Montreal. As in Pendziwol's Dawn Watch (2004), the fiction is purposive: the boy helps rescue a white gentleman trader whose canoe is destroyed in a storm on the lake. But the clear, mixed-media illustrations capture the people and the place, contrasting the harsh storm in the wilderness with the final "rendezvous" at the fort, where the brave voyageurs (including the boy's father), the traders, and the local community dance and celebrate together. great book

Here is an excerpt from my review on the Mother Daughter Book Reviews website. Visit us for the full review and to hear what my kids learned from this book. The Red Sash is an excellent picture book depicting the history of the fur trade in Canada and introducing children to the importance of the relationships among the First Nations and Métis people of Canada, the French Canadian voyageurs, and the British-based North West Trading Company. While these relationships were at often times tenuous, this story focuses on the cultural pride of the Métis people who played a key role in the fur trade of the 1800′s. I highly recommend this book as an excellent resource in elementary schools across Canada as a way to educate children about the fur trade industry and the important role of the voyageurs in Canadian history. Ages 5+* This book was provided to me by the publisher free-of-charge as part of the Multicultural Children’s Book Day in exchange for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own. *

Excellent book for educating children through a lovely story.

#656,696 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This is a contemporary drama story perfect for an ABC Family TV series. Three weeks into her Freshman year of college, Laurel discovers that she's pregnant. What will she do about it? Who can she tell? I put off reading this one for a while because I wasn't sure the soap opera sounding plot would grab me, but it got its hooks in nice and deep once I finally opened it up and gave it a chance. Duval has created a complex character in Laurel. On the surface she seems like a pretty, smart, rich girl with no real worries. Then the layers come on one after another, and you find yourself really aching for her. The horrible relationship with her father. The missed connection with the boy she meets at school. Being left out of campus life. There are three wonderful characters who come to her side in the second half of the book, and by then you are so thankful they've arrived. College is hard. Pregnancy is hard. Trying to do them both at the same time, at eighteen, with no help? This really was an unexpected page turner for me. I was with her journey right up to the end and a little curious as to what will happen to her next. I definitely recommend this for readers 16 and older.

This is the kind of book that you will consume voraciously, rather than read. Laurel is a real, relatable character and she compels you come along with her on her bumpy journey. This book takes one of the central issues of the "culture wars"--teen sexuality and pregnancy and deals with it in a decidedly non-political way. That's important--because ultimately these decisions and life-pivots are all made one at a time, by individual people arriving at the best choice for them at that time. This story fosters empathy and compassion--highly recommended.

This was a really interesting read. I kept putting myself in the MC's head and thinking about my own college life and how different things would have been experiencing college through the perspective of an expecting freshman. The parties/dorm life/supporting characters were very realistic, and I found Laurel to be quietly strong. I hope there's a sequel to the book so I can find out what's next for her and her family!

It was a so so read the girl was right in what she did however and things turned out all right in the end

This is probably one of the best books I've read in over a year. Laurel is a real person, someone we all know and love. Beautifully written! I hope there's a second book soon. Extremely happy I got a chance to read this.

Once getting to a certain point I couldn't let go of this book!! It turned out to make me cry; it was so beautiful. I am the same age as the girl in the novel, so it was easy to relate to her story. I have a friend going through the same situation and this book actually has taught me a lot about pregnancy that may come in handy.

The entire book is about a girl that got pregnant at the start of her freshman year and hid it from everyone. I find it unrealistic that she was able to hide her pregnancy for so long and I guess I don't quite understand the motivation. But I liked the story. It was new a innovative.

I really enjoyed this book and what it was about. I am in college and cannot imagine what my life would have been like if I would have got pregnant my freshman year. it is so interesting to see how she processes the pregnancy along with her schooling. a definite must read.

The power of the book will likely be many different things for different people. What's to love are the clear pristine images of an interestingly diverse set of musicians/creators, their personal interview responses which are refreshingly deeper than one often gets in the music press or media, and for me particularly, the thoughtfully edited movie one can download, which offers an intriguing look and listen to many of these artists and industry mavens give more candid views about this crazy thing we call Music. It's also at least an attempt to evolve the coffee table anthology format, with new millennial media integration: documentary video and website. I also like that it focusses on music purely and not so much on the current disruption from new technologies. What's not so great for me is the somewhat sterile contemporary sheen of Zuckerman's photography, and the promise of fuller content that's evoked by the presence of a website and movie [why not more from each artist - they could post their own video responses to the book online on a Vimeo or YouTube channel, and even full interviews] but not explored. Still this is his book, very fair value for the amount of content, and though my personal preference is for more grit, less contrived, dressed-up-for-camera polish in the images and to some degree the movie; all this is more than made up for by a clear commitment to getting closer to the true relationship all these musical minds have with their beloved art form and it's fruits. The full content adds up to a significant contemporary look at a vast subject and makes it an excellent and worthy purchase for any music lover.

Boy was this book a "huge" surprise, and I mean that truely. This book was not only huge in size, but it was in exellent condition and for the price I paid, it was well worth the money. I now have most of the series and I do plan on purchasing more in future. Thanks for a great book!

This made a wonderful gift for my piano teacher. She loves it.

First, kudos to the stellar photography this book contains. Such clarity and grasping imagery. We randomly picked an artist (one we didn't know) and were engaged by the artists thoughts and take on life in general. Influences and backgrounds build the story and you come away knowing something unique about each one. How can life not be part of the story? One thing we find a bit difficult is the print size - lots of good bits to read but somewhat hard to focus on due to the size of the font and the spacing. Overall, it makes an interesting read - one of those good books to read for a short time then back onto the coffee table for another session. We were thinking it would be less philosophical and a bit more on the musicians history- either way, we're going to read every page.

I enjoyed the book. It listed some artists that I was really interested in reading about. I learned some new things about my favorite artists. It's a good coffee book to have to catch up on what make musicians tick.

Most people will buy this book for the included interview movie download. Which has a few interesting statements from great musicians, but a lot more annoying blabbering from self-important narcissists like Sinead O'Connor, Billy Corgan or Fiona Apple.Do you need to hear that Brandy never sits down to write without praying first? Do you need to see how screwed up Kenny Rogers' face really is (hint: It's much, much worse than you thought)? So, if the pictures don't warrant the price for you, don't hope for the movie to push it over the edge. It won't.

Made an impressive gift!

Got this for super cheap, I think under 10 dollars all together. Good little read that sits on my coffee table. Cool musicians are in here.
