Five Spirits: Alchemical Acupuncture for Psychological and Spiritual Healing

Review

Reviewed by Andy WickensIn her first book, Dechar aims to identify the essential tenets of acupuncture and Chinese medicine, melding the mythic practices with thephilosophy and techniques taught to modern practitioners. Central to her practice, as illustrated here, is her notion of "Alchemical Acupuncture"―theblending of acupuncture, the Five Spirits of traditional Chinese medicine, and the psychosomatic healing of Taoist psychology. Dechar presents case studies throughout, illustrating principles from her practice. She strivesnot to translate Chinese medicine into a Western form of understanding but instead supports Western expansion of consciousness to allow for anunderstanding of this type of reality. Her depth of understanding is evident, and this impressive goal may best be placed into the hands of existing practitioners. Dechar's book is admirable in its scope but difficult in its detail. The concepts are explained well, but the average consumer may find it all a bit overwhelming. Recommended for public libraries and alternative medicine collections and highly recommended for students in the field. (2006-02-01)

When not covering the news, Loren has worked at improving the environment as a founding trustee of the EcoLife Foundation. The EcoLife Foundation has projects in the United States, Mexico, and Africa aimed at reducing carbon output, reforesting important habitat, and saving vulnerable species, like monarch butterflies in Mexico and mountain gorillas in Uganda. He is a passionate organic vegetable gardener.   A native Californian, JANET HOGAN TAYLOR graduated from San Jose State University with a bachelor’s degree in biology with emphasis in entomology. Janet took a job with the San Diego Zoo, where she became a senior keeper in the bird department. Never forgetting her roots in entomology, Janet helped develop several natural pest control techniques at the zoo to keep the birds and animals pest free. Currently, Janet works as an environmental scientist and resides in Southern California with her husband, a black lab named Drake, and hundreds of backyard birds, reptiles, and assorted varmints. She and her husband Brian, also an entomologist, have two grown children.   Loren and Janet have written three books together: Dead Snails Leave No Trails, Dead Daisies Make Me Crazy, and The Worm Book.

Introduction   Take a stroll through most home-and-garden stores these days and it’s easy to believe we’ve cured our addiction to chemicals. Terms like “organic,” “earth friendly,” “all natural,” “locally grown,” and so on are prominently displayed on product packaging. But our enlightenment may be more about slogans and marketing than a new understanding of the natural world and the importance of protecting it.   I realized how little we’ve moved toward chemical-free gardening while using social media. In addition to posting vacation pictures and keeping in touch with friends from back home, I use Facebook to share occasional gardening videos and images from my organic growing projects. Recently, I posted pictures of tomato hornworms, their sphinx moth mothers, and the cocoons containing the next generation of the hungry pests. My thinking was to connect the dots for gardeners who are suddenly finding the gigantic caterpillars in their gardens. Many people posted the inevitable: “Eewwww,” “Yuck,” and “Ohhh gross!” Quite a few people were surprised and appreciative that they now understood the pest’s life stages.   Aha! I had them, and I wanted to relate it to the best and least-toxic way to kill the garden bad guys. So I posted a picture of a hornworm covered with eggs from the tiny beneficial braconid wasp and added a short blurb explaining what the picture showed. I also suggested they be left in the garden when found with the eggs on their backs.   Now, after sharing my views for more than thirty years on TV in California, I assume the people who “friend” me on Facebook know I advocate less toxic methods of feeding our plants and managing pests. So I was shocked at the responses to my latest caterpillar and parasite picture. Those who commented advocated everything up to and including nuclear attack to kill the hornworm and especially the one with the growths all over its back. I reasoned with them: “No, wait—if left alone the eggs will hatch, and the baby wasps will eat the caterpillar and go on to search and destroy any other caterpillars in the garden!” They didn’t care. All they wanted was the thing gone; methods be damned. The last things they wanted were worms and wasps! Oh well, I tried. But I knew there had to be a better way—and that is precisely what my friend Janet Taylor and I hope to provide in the pages ahead.    Thank you for picking up Dead Snails Leave No Trails. Between these covers, Janet and I have compiled some unique ideas we’ve discovered to eliminate out-of-control pests. We also share some old-fashioned but logical methods of nonchemical gardening and pest control. Our goal is to consider how nature seeks balance. Infestations most often happen when that balance is upset, allowing single species to grow out of control. That’s exactly what we face when chemical pesticides are used. They are indiscriminate killers. Chemical insect sprays do not understand the difference between an insect that will eat your prized veggies and the ones that make their living by eating the same insect pests you want gone. When exterminating sprays enter the equation, everything is killed, and it’s the pests that return first and in greater numbers, followed much more slowly by the beneficial critters.   In an organically grown garden, balance is the general rule. Pests still exist, but so do the natural means of dealing with them. Unfortunately, in our efforts to harvest maximum amounts of food, we’ve come to view all insects as enemies. We have created chemical poisons to kill and chemical fertilizers to encourage growth. They each appear to achieve their objective, and in the case of chemical pesticides, they do their job too well. But again, most are indiscriminate and kill everything with which they come into contact. Too many of the victims are beneficial insects and animals, which perform the essential work of pollinating, breaking down organic matter, and killing pests. Our goal is to replicate nature when possible or to use the least toxic means of achieving our goal of a happy, healthy, natural home and garden.   My coauthor Janet is an entomologist by profession. Her knowledge of the insect world still astounds me, twenty years after we first met. She is the brains in this operation and knows more about the creepy crawlers in our homes and gardens than any ordinary person could ever hope to know. On the other hand, I turned my gardening hobby into part of my profession as a way to maintain sanity. As a southern California TV weatherman, I was going crazy. All those jokes are true. The weather is wonderful, but most days are between 65°F and 70°F, with night and morning low clouds and afternoon sunshine. The rest of the time there are either raging east winds that spark destructive wildfires or brief heavy downpours that cause hillsides to give way in the famous western mudslides.   Most of the year I was bored silly, repeating the same numbers and conditions day in and day out. When I began adding short segments on the native animals in my yard, or the ants that I found had invaded my kitchen counter, I was happily shocked by the response. People related. Some had wondered about the same creature in their yard or had awakened to the same ant invasion. When I met Janet, she said she’d noticed the TV segments and thought we should team up. Together, we’ve learned so much about the things that bug us, and together we’ve come up with some highly effective ways to foil pests and encourage the good guys. We hope you’ll agree that a chemical-free yard and garden, where nature is in balance, is a much nicer place to be.   —Loren Nancarrow

I almost never write Amazon reviews, but feel compelled to in the case of this gem of a textbook.Quick about me:-solid general computer skills (e.g. Excel), but NO programming background-took statistics in high school, barely passed calculus in college-was inspired to learn R after seeing a colleague use it for data analysis-have been disappointed by R texts that I've encountered thus far, finding them either too advanced or poorly organized/writtenWhy I am giving this book 5 stars:-it is structured very logically, starting with the basics of the language before moving onto programming, statistics, and more advanced concepts-it is accessible to a wide audience, yet goes into the necessary level of detail-it is well written, in an easy, clear voice-an appropriate balance of text vs code examples and graphics-it has effective exercises at logical points to ensure the reader not only understands, but can execute the concepts learned-it is aesthetically very nice -- the spine doesn't crack, the book doesn't warp over time, the font and text size are very readableAs a sidenote, I ordered R for Dummies as well. I didn't give it an especially thorough glance, but quickly flipped through it and decided to return it because I knew on first glance that The Book of R was far superior.

For what it is, this is a good book. It has lots of useful basic information to help new users like me get started. What is missing is any treatment of time series.

The Book of R is an excellent book to start with when it comes to learning R for the first time. It's a huge book which is nearly 800 pages long. That being said, I lost motivation after 500 pages because I saw too many technical details not relevant to me. The author should have focused on the basics first. All in all, The Book of R should initially serve you well.

This book is good for beginners as it covers a lot of materialin a simple way.You will need a more advanced book to go further on any onesubject.

The content of this book is good, but my problem is with the format of an ebook. This was my first experience with an ebook, and I believe navigating through an ebook in this format is so difficult. My school assignments were according to the page numbers of this book and I could not find pages. I don't think I'll buy an ebook next time.

Very good book for R beginners and gives a firm groundof the fundamentals of R use in statistics.

Great book that takes one thru all the elements of R. Definitely a go-to reference

The content of this book is quite detailed. There are so many examples. Every chapter summarizes the functions introduced in the chapter at the end. I really love this book!

Lee Cart's Born in the Wayeb caught me completely engaged, and by the end, yearning to read the next volume of the The Mayan Chronicles. This historical fantasy is set in Ancient Mexico, and each character is beautifully developed, especially that of Na'om, a girl born during the Wayeb Festival, whose dreams and visions give us insight into what one's life is like when one is sensitive to the energy in "other worlds." Similar insights arise in Carlos Castaneda's The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge" (a depiction of the author's anthropological field work) and Lynn Andrews' "Medicine Woman" (a visionary autobiography). Lee Cart brings her knowledge of and experiences having lived in Mexico to us through the thoughtful third-person telling of this fabulous tale.

Born in the Wayeb draws you into the mysterious world of the Mayans. The author, Lee Cart, takes you on a journey filled with rich details and intrigue that make the characters come alive. I look forward to the next book to find out what happens to the young girl, Na'om, and the black witch of Mayapan.

BORN IN THE WAYEB by Lee E. Cart is an excellent fantasy novel for those who want to travel deep into the fascinating world of the Mayans. The cover is interesting and striking, and should attract those readers looking for this type of novel. I like how the author makes plain on the front and back that this is the first of a series. This is important, so readers will be on the lookout for additional books. The back cover copy is intriguing enough to encourage readers looking for this type of novel to purchase. An author photo would have been a nice touch. Endorsements would have also been nice to see.All of the helps – map, glossaries, etc., are great additions. I found them useful as I read through the book. It took me awhile to get into the story, but it was very interesting. The author has taken the time to delve into the setting and knows the characters and background, and I felt really transported into this world. I could get lost in it. As a result, I think readers will definitely be looking for future installments. I think this talented author has a bright future and will develop a loyal reader following.

A book, full of layers, some still waiting to be peeled. At first, it took some effort to get used to names and places but after a few sections I looked forward to the story and the characters. I'm excited about the second book, it promises an incredible good read and lots of fun.

I just finished Book One of The Mayan Chronicles, Born in the Wayeb, and can't wait to read book two. I was intrigued by the interwoven plot, the development of the characters, and the fantasy aspects (talking skulls and doors to the underworld). This obviously well-researched depiction of the time does what all good stories do: it informs and entertains. Go Na'om!

As a fan of Amber Rose, I was astonished (well, not *entirely* astonished) by how bad this book was.Upon initially ordering the book, I was excited to hear autobiographical details of Amber's life - as well as her genuine advice on various topics. Most of the book is honestly unreadable. Although I obviously wasn't expecting the writing prowess of Steinbeck, it's written so badly that I feel like I'm reading one of my angsty diary entries from when I was in middle school. Also, the entire thing is triple-spaced and interspersed with blown-up iPhone selfies of Amber - stretching out one page of material into five pages.Additionally, the "advice" (if you can call it that) is awful. Amber is rarely honest in the book - she spends every other sentence telling the reader to "love themselves" and "be themselves" - the type of advice you've heard for years. It's hardly revolutionary - which is extremely disappointing - as Amber prides herself on blazing the travels for embracement of female sexuality. I wanted to hear her true and honest thoughts on this subject - and instead, we get some ghost-written cookie-cutter mantra that hardly pushes a PG rating. If you want an extremely large (and heavy) book filled with mediocre and pixelated iPhone photos of Amber interspersed with extremely vague feel-good compliments, then this is for you. If not, I can safely say you will be fine giving this a miss.

I bought this book mostly just because I love Amber Rose. I was happy to read about her life and the way she thinks. I also found this book to be a confidence booster. She reminds you to be your true beautiful self, not be a specific way.

I started not to get this book and some of the reviews I simply don't agree with. This was by far my best read of 2016, so far it is very interesting. I picked up some vital inspiration and insight on becoming a bad B*! BAD BITCH is just a figure of speech... The book really covers and teaches the foundation of being a confident and beautiful woman in other words. This book was very well written and attention holding. Honestly, the image that is often portrayed of Amber on social media, etc, really doesn't coincide with the Amber that wrote this book. I'm glad I purchased this.

Honestly I love Amber but this book is hard to read if you’re an avid reader or intelligent. I brought it to show support but I just can’t.

I guess it’s a good book if need self-help

I was expecting so much better out of this book so I was a bit disappointed. A biography would have been pretty interesting, but this was just full of little tips for women.

Trash. Pure trash.

Great book.

I was going the the gym for about 2 years, 3 days a week, with very little to show for the effort. I was trying to eat a healthy diet. But I was overweight, and had gained little, if any, muscle mass. After trying this diet for about 6 months, the results were amazing. It turns out I was not getting enough protein, so the muscles could not develop. My muscle growth amazed me. The Formula diet gives you plenty to eat, a balanced diet with foods good for you. Also good for diabetics, because your carbs and calories are limited, but you do not go hungry. 10 years later I am still on this diet, still using recipes from this book, and still pumping iron. A diet is not something you go on to lose weight, then go back to your old eating habits. A diet is your way of life, how you keep yourself healthy and physically fit, combined with exercise.

This book is based on a balanced meal and gives excellent, easy to follow recipes for both the 21 day fat flush and then regular meals. My husband and I have been following it for 2 weeks and are amazed at how light we feel. We didn't weigh ourselves first as we just wanted to change our shape. The mid-abdominal fat is reducing and we feel great! You need to be committed to weighing and measuring, but once you get into it, it's very simple to follow. We recommend this book to anyone who is looking to reduce their body fat, and lose weight.

"The Formula" is an easy to understand, easy to follow 40:30:30 cookbook. I like it better now than when we began. I want to personally thank the Daousts for their work.I wrote an anonymous review from Redondo Beach after my first week. It's now been eight weeks. I'm 6 feet tall and was 221 pounds. I have lost 22 pounds. My goal is to reach 180. I broke 200 this past weekend. By the way, I have not exercised at all. Perhaps pounds do come off easier when starting out 40 lbs over, but they are coming off.My doctor told me three years ago, "Lose 30 lbs and lower your blood pressure. Goodbye." No suggestions, no help. Almost by accident my wife saw The Formula mentioned on TV. It looked "balanced." We tried it.The 40:30:30 system works and is painless weight loss. Yes, protein sources such as 2% cottage cheese, lowfat cheese, chicken, beef and whey are somewhat expensive. We have had to re-learn shopping. We shop the perimeter of the market, not the inside aisles. We have re-learned cooking and eating, too. Yes, 40:30:30 is low calorie. That's the point: low calorie without hunger. How else are you going to lose weight? The difference is that I don't want to go off this diet. It's simply a better way to eat. It's more than weight loss, though. With more study, I find this diet is really about controlling hormones, not calories (see "Entering The Zone," by Dr. Barry Sears, to understand the theory behind the practice in this book). At age 49 and 40 lbs overweight, I had around 164,000 calories stored. (9 cal/gram of fat.) How to get that fat to burn off? 40:30:30 controls glucose/blood sugar levels, which in turn controls insulin levels. With insulin under control, another hormone, glucagon, can come into play. This hormone tells the body to burn fat. It releases the stored fat energy. As long as I am burning that fat, I don't feel hungry and I am losing weight, even at night, even without exercise. The gentleman who only had a few pounds to lose and complained he didn't lose anything in a week might have overlooked what was actually going on in his body: reduction of body fat and the build up of lean muscle mass. This can happen when one is exercising, which he was. When put on this diet, professional football players actually gained as much as eleven pounds, but reduced the percentage of body fat. They became leaner, stronger, faster and more agile. One man started the diet at 190 and never lost a pound. He had to buy a new wardrobe, though, because he leaned out. He looked great. For me, my mood is better, I handle stress better, I sleep better, I have less intestinal gas (better digestion) and my blood pressure is normal. I have increased energy, need less sleep, and rise early on weekends ready to go instead of taking most of the weekend to recover from the week's stresses. I feel as if I've been given many additional years of active life.Does it require cooking and prep? Yes. Good food doesn't just happen. It takes some work. Is it a burden? No. My wife felt she was going to lose me unless we did something. She views this as a ministry to me, which I deeply appreciate. I have gotten into the kitchen, too. We are eating fruits, vegetables, lean meats, dairy-all good stuff. We don't miss the pizza and white bread. It's fun baking good food. It's better than staring at some lamebrain TV sitcom, which is what I was doing because I had no energy. What's more, I know the food we prepare is exactly right for us and tastes great. Consider another angle: we in America have every food we need, in high quality, available at good prices all year long. It's right there in the store. That is an amazing blessing. Take advantage of it.Look--you can find dozens of reasons to stay fat. "I don't have time." "If we had a personal chef, I'd do it." "I refuse to give up some foods." "I don't like to shop and want the food to jump into my mouth by itself and still want to look like a movie star." If you like it that way, fine. All I know is that I have to buy new clothes because everything I have is too large. I also have people (especially women) asking me what is going on and how I lost so much weight so fast. I print out a copy of this ... page and give it to them. The method is in The Formula and several other 40:30:30 cookbooks. The theory is in Dr. Sears' works on The Zone. The information you need is there. You don't need magic potions. You don't need exercise equipment. You don't need appetite suppressants. You don't need a cabinet full of supplements. You don't need liposuction. What you need is recipes for each meal and each snack that give your body the right portions of carbohydrates, fat and protein it needs for peak performance--not too much food, not too little. This book is a great start. The rest is up to you.

I waited to review this product until I put it to the test. If you follow the instructions, which are very clear by the way, you WILL be successful in your weight loss efforts. I am over 40 and female. My goal was to lose 12-15 pounds of fat in a healthy manner without sacrificing any muscle. It has been about 6 weeks since I started this program and I only have four lbs of fat left to lose. I do exercise (usually stationary bike and/or Callanetics) approx 40 min per day at least 4 days per week. I did "cheat" a few times and am still happy with the results achieved. This program works as well as you work it. My 50+ year old husband has lost 20 lbs without exercising (his goal is 40 lbs). The recipes are nutritionally sound with a good variety. Many programs instruct you to eat "balanced meals" and to practice "portion control" without ever defining what a balanced meal consists of nor do they explain how you arrive at a suitable portion size for each individual . . . this books DOES!!! Well worth the money.

I have done my share of dieting and weight loss plans, Weight Watchers, shakes, calorie counting, deal a meal etc. but this is the easiest plan I ever followed. It is all spelled out for you, all the grams are calculated for you so you don't have to be a math major to figure out what to eat. The food is good and the preparation is not so hard if you do the shopping and plan each day's meals ahead of time. And you can eat out, they give you a list of fast foods that you can have and there are a lot of them to pick from so you are not deprived. They also give you a list of prepackaged meals that you can have which are for the microwave if you are in a hurry to eat. The only big thing is you have to buy whey protein powder which is pure protein, but they even give you a phone number of where you can order it if you can't find it. So everything is covered for you. No excuses! I just started the program a few weeks ago and I quickly lost 5 pounds and my body fat is reducing already because people have noticed the difference. The best thing about this plan is that I know I can stay on this for the rest of my life. No more yo-yo dieting. What a relief!

Disappointed in this book. It calls for Whey Protein intake...A lot of it. I can’t tolerate whey and it didn’t really offer any clear cut substitutions. They advise one brand of whey powder. I rebought thecold book that I had yrs ago. It had great guidelines and recipes. Waiting for it to be delivered.

Enjoy the stories told in this book.

great stories lead to an understanding of Navajo Culture. Also awesome photographs

This book offers an especially sensitive and sympathetic introduction to rug weaving, a major element of Navajo culture, and is typical of the quality books published by Northland Press. Noel Bennett accomplished something which few outsiders even try on the Navajo Nation. Based on her background and experience, she set out to understand and learn one of the traditional crafts -- weaving a rug from raw wool to finished product. It looks easy. After all, lots of Anglos weave. Some even spin yarn. The whole process, from raw wool to a finished rug that is work of art, sounds simple in the telling; but, reality is different. Let me give you an example. Fry bread is a traditional Navajo food, which almost every woman can make without thinking. It's as natural as walking. Maybe one of the simplest of traditional Navajo skills. I've tried to learn one element of it, taking a small ball of dough and patting and kneading it out to a circle about a foot in diameter that is then dropped into hot oil to be cooked to a golden brown. It was a lot of fun. The Navajos got a lot of amusement out of watching me try and mostly fail, day after day. I had fun trying. My "teacher" was kind, helpful, patient and amused; she'd show me again and again, but I inevitably ended up with a lumpy disc of dough that she'd patiently pat into a proper circle before laying it in the frying pan. In other words, it ain't as easy as it looks. Bennett undertook a similar but far more complicated learning experience in the 1960s. Unlike me, she stayed with it and became skilled. One result is this book, a sensitive semi-insider's look at a traditional craft that exemplifies one of the few genuine American art forms. Her desire to learn was appreciated by her Navajo friends; one reward is she becomes a target of their good natured humor, a friend of the family. Many outsiders "study" and patronize Native American cultures; Bennett became part of it. There is a genuine "Us vs. Them" attitude among the Navajo, with very good reason based on the constant Bordertown (Gallup, Winslow, Holbrook, Flagstaff, Farmington, etc.) prejudice and exploitation. The Navajos came to regard Bennett as one of "the People," so when it came to entering a rug in an off-reservation exhibition her Navajo friends helped her evade some pretentious Anglo rules. It's always fun to poke fun at the bilagaana (Anglos). Their pretensions are too good not to laugh at. Americans like to think, "Underneath, everyone is basically the same." Bennett appreciates there are fundamental differences between Navajo and Anglo cultures. She touches on it, such as the importance of "four" in Navajo culture. Anglo culture is based on "three," such as the Trinity in religion and three examples if you want to prove something; Navajo culture has "four" as typified by the four cardinal directions, four sacred mountains, four basic colors, four precious materials for jewelry. Bennett cites these examples, but she never really delves into the meaning of these cultural differences. For example, Anglos live in a confrontational culture of guilt or innocence; Navajos live in a consensus culture in which K'e, the spirit of harmony, is more important. But, she lived in the western Navajo Nation where the more traditional people live; the eastern side, where I lived, is more accustomed to pushy Anglos. She feigns shock at some Anglo ways; my experience is that most Navajos fully understand the aggressive Anglo world and its rude contrast with their patience. She is more of a nizhoni (beautiful) person; I'm more of the Ma'ii tso (which has far more meanings than simply "fox"). In general, though, she offers a sympathetic, intelligent insight into rug weaving -- one of the integral elements of Navajo culture. Her book is the epitome of Anglo culture -- an "insider's" view of a different culture, one that most people will never see and even fewer will ever have a chance to begin to understand. It's well worth buying, reading, keeping and sharing with friends.

BOOK REVIEWHALO OF THE SUNREVIEW BY SUSAN G. STERNWritten for Oriental Rug Review, Vol 8 #6.Noël Bennett's book, Halo of the Sun, is really a volume about love-- cultural love. Yet the reader feels Bennett's awkwardness and fearfulness as she encounters the ancient Navajo customs foreign to her experience. Although this is Bennett's fourth book about the Navajo, a culture she embraced more than 20 years ago, it is the first volume of stories to take us inside the Indian culture. Through the author's Anglo eyes we intimately view Navajo life, seeing it as humanely as she did, and feeling profound respect and love.Photographs by John Running picture the Navajo people in their homes, surrounded by the material and spiritual landscape of their lives. Made possible by two grants, one from the L.J. Skaggs and Mary C. Skaggs Foundation and the other from the Weatherhead Foundation, this work is born out of many years of love between Bennett and the Navajo People.Bennett, a well known New Mexican author, weaver, and artist, successfully presents insights gained from her devotion to weaving, and through this technical relationship offers patterns of understanding between the traditional Navajo culture and the predominate and surrounding Anglo civilization. The enduring values of traditional Navajo life, so elusive to the Anglo mind, are made accessible through every day stories that illustrate simple but eloquent truths. Through her words we see the Navajo with a clearer focus and a deeper vision.Noël Bennett is blessed with an unusually beautiful voice. It sings with rhythmic warmth; humor, and mellifluent but penetrating clarity. Its soothing lilt caresses the ear and bears a mesmerizing quality as it imparts the stories and legends she learned as an apprentice weaver on the Navajo Reservation. For eight years Bennett worked on the Reservation, mastering the technical aspects of Navajo weavers art. She performed every activity associated with the craft - from shearing the sheep to the carding, spinning, and dyeing of the wool. While following the weaver's way and working with the women, Noë1 Bennett heard and learned the philosophical values of traditional Navajo thought. Listening to the weaving legends as she sat patiently at her vertical loom, she came to understand the subtle psychological modes by which Navajo culture has survived and coped in its thousand years on the North American continent.Halo of the Sun addresses some of the techniques used by the Navajo to handle the human condition. The stories reveal a road map to psychological well being. The legends seem a prescription for coping with life's adversities. The wisdom provided in these oral legends are pertinent to human society anywhere. One story depicts the potential evil of a snake. It is resolved successfully and in such a way as to be a lesson in how to deal creatively with panic and fear. Another story describes friendship, generosity and the Anglo concept of "thank you." The most fascinating legends deal with the power in a name, names by contrast being carelessly tossed about in Anglo culture. For the Navajo, saying a name aloud calls that thing into being. Therefore, a name is a sacred thing and the Navajo do not use a name lightly. In fact, a Navajo child is given its true name only after Grandfather has observed the baby for a year or two, considering the child's most distinguishable attribute. This trait, in the form of a symbolic Navajo name, like "Never-sleeps" or "Running-Woman," stays with a person for life, to be drawn on as a permanent source of strength and as a connection to one's unchanging essence and ancestry. After all, Grandfather chose the appellation."Time is nothing,"' Bennett writes. "But a story is a source of power." To illuminate the significance of the storytelling tradition to the Navajo, Bennett offers a personal and insightful quote by Indian author Leslie Marmon Silko. "I will tell you something about stories," Silko says. "They aren't just entertainment. Don't be fooled. They are all we have, you see, all we have to fight off illness and death. You don't have anything if you don't have stories."Noël Bennett grew up in California, receiving a B.A. in Art in 1961 and an M.A. in Education in 1962 from Stanford University. With her former physician-husband, she joined the Public Health Service in 1968 and shortly thereafter moved to the Navajo Reservation in Tuba City, Arizona. Noël, equipped with a cross-cultural heritage (her father was Lebanese and her mother is of diverse multi-ethnic background) and her artistic gifts, found herself in the center of the ancient Navajo Nation. She was determined to learn weaving, but not just "how to" but to understand, in the Navajo way, the entire thinking and feeling of weaving as well.On reservation Noël found it difficult to find a Navajo weaver willing to teach an Anglo woman. Yet she went about the business of her life - going to the post office for mail, visiting the hospital where her husband worked, hauling clothes to the laundromat, always searching for a weaving teacher. Through her words we feel the rebuffs and resistance she met. We admire her courage."No one pitied my clumsiness with the weaving cards. No matter how much difficulty I encountered, no one offered help. No advice. No words at all. Just a soft easy giggle occasionally rippling around the growing circle. There was nothing to do but continue. Intently. Completely. With singleness of mind."Noël persisted. She studied the Navajo language. She picked up hitchhikers on reservation in an attempt to learn more. Finally, there was a breakthrough. She found and befriended Tiana Bighorse, a Navajo weaver of great skill and, furthermore, a patient teacher. From then on Noël Bennett immersed herself in the Navajo way of life. She made her own corn pollen pouch out of deer skin. tanning the leather herself. She sat at healing ceremonies. She cooked and ate in the Navajo tradition. Lamb, prepared in the Lebanese way, was a favorite dish in her childhood home."I loved the food," Noël said. "Some of the doctors and their wives were appalled by it. They wouldn't eat the mutton or fry-bread. If it was cooked, I ate it," Noël said. "I thought it was nice they even offered me any."She participated in traditional,Navajo ceremonies, sitting long hours on the dirt floor of hogans. But by weaving she entered Navajo life. She learned when to be silent. She learned how to ask questions without giving offense. She came to understand the Navajo sense of time. The skeins of plant-dyed yarn yielded much more than artful weavings. The woolen fibers carried her into the spiritual fabric of the Navajo way."It would be easy to misinterpret the Navajo form of body language," Noël said. "They say, if you don't know what to do, do nothing. Put your feet together, stand up straight and cross your arms. That is the position of not breaking any taboos. We, as Anglos, can interpret that as hostility, but they are just being quiet, patient and even shy. You cannot apply from our culture what you think is true to the Navajo."As Noël Bennett learned the ways and people came to trust her, they knew she was not simply taking their knowledge; they felt her love and respect for their culture. And then, through her writings, she was to share understanding between her adopted culture and the American one.Halo of the Sun is about the love of a people, art, weavings, customs, food, and ceremonies. Each story illuminates a specific value of classical Navajo culture. They are rendered for Anglo understanding because Noël Bennett is an Anglo who adopted Navajo culture with her heart. And now she presents these stories for readers outside the Navajo culture. Ultimately, these legends are a gift from the Navajo people. Just as the Wampanoag tribe taught the Pilgrims how to survive the physical hardships of 1620 - by planting maize and beans, by capturing turkeys, and harvesting cranberries - so the Navajo teach ageless wisdom in a time of shifting values, family upheavals, and psychological crisis. The life of the Navajo has never drifted from the land. Consequently, their values have remained constant and tied to the natural world of the elements.Noël Bennett renders the Navajo legends in an honest, straightforward style while retaining the poetry of the mystical Navajo voice. Halo of the Sun is a joyous book, written well, replete with sadness and humor, but rich in rare sagacity."Return to your loom. Resume your work. Spin your web of wool. And as you weave and as you work, Life's Truths will come to you." So say the Navajo Holy Ones in Halo of the Sun.
